My Tommy is an eastern painted turtle and has been in my farm pond for the 21yrs I have lived here. Very friendly, comes when called and rides on my float with me. Sometime during the last week something bit off most of his left rear leg leaving only a little flesh and a piece of bone. Will he be ok or should what's left of the leg be removed?

So many fishermen think they need to rid their fishing holes of painted turtles "because they eat my fish." As a wildlife biologist, and a turtle breeder, I know that the turtles mostly eat the sick and dying fish, which helps keep the fish populations healthier. Their diet however mostly consists of algae and other water plants, which helps clear ponds of choking vegetation. Pass that info on to fishermen who berate turtles so that they can learn to appreciate the good turtles do.
