Here in Michigan as a kid I would find musk turtle hatchlings smaller than a nickel. My mom couldn't believe it was a turtle and not some kind of bug or beetle.

The stinkpots are pretty small. Max out around 5”. Razor backs are slightly larger but not by much

I'm blessed to have 3-7 Eastern muds in my driveway culvert they patrol my ditch when it fills. I imagine they cross the road to the brackish creek on the regular for more food sources

I raised 4 to 5 river turtles with the orange around their shells. They were size of quarters when my husband rescued from mud puddles n being ran over and a tiny ugly baby pigeon. Tgey went from inside aquariums to the largest plastic pools. They were moved inside our basement in winter and would get on their woiden stumos and watch me wash and fold clothes. We moved near his job n one day it rained n i wasnt there to empty water out of the pool n they all got out n went bacj to the same place they were born at. Id love to have more to raise. A snapping turtle came in our yard my dogs were barking at it. Lol came out of landlords pind about 1/2 to 3/4 mile away so we took to next pond up on our dead end road. As a kid i had the turtle they sold. 😊

How could that of hatched from this year? It would have been last years hatchling from late fall and brumated over winter and just come out now. What’s the latest that turtles will lay eggs? Or I should ask is what’s the latest you have seen hatchlings?I only ask is because I bought a “ hatchling “ was supposed to be a well started baby from one of the on line sites in November. Won’t say from which one but it was a hatchling days old and I could not get it to eat. I have many turtle’s and a lot of experience but I just couldn’t get it to eat and after 3 weeks it died. I was wondering if it was possibly wild caught in November and was trying to Brumate and that’s why it wouldn’t eat and died . I was keeping it from doing that

Theyre actually not the smallest, the vallarta mud turtles( kinosternon vogti) are. This turtle species was actually discovered in 2018!
