At this point in its franchise lifespan there is zero reason why pokemon isn't just a straight up mmorpg. The world is massive with several islands at this point and hundred of pokemon to be caught. Meanwhile the games always feel closed off, the online sucks, production quality is indie level, and exploration is mediocre.

This game really is a true anomaly within the gaming industry. No promotion nor hype shadow drops in Alpha and within a weekend the game sells 5 million copies by now. They saw the niche that Nintendo and GameFreak had been refusing to fill competently and filled it. Hopefully this will be healthy competition that shows Nintendo that they need to listen to their customers and just make a genuine effort at a high quality, open world, multiplayer pokemon game. If that game came out, it would sell tens of millions of copies.

Dear god! I’m loving Palworld so far (only 2 hours in) but I’m sick of the Pokemon with guns analogy. After playing, the best analogy I can come up with is Conan with Pokemon. Conan has been doing these game mechanics since day one of its release. It’s just that it’s too complicated and the goals in Palworld are easier to track. Also Palworld bridges the “I’m lost” gap far better than Conan. Way better guidance for player and world progression. Luke, you’re a gumbo of fun! Still holding on to hope for Suicide(Game)Squad 😂.

Hot take: Opposition to ai generated art is basically Ludditism rebranded for 21st century hipster ‘creatives’. Think of it this way - any expense paid by a company to produce something will necessarily be passed on to the consumer. When artists complain about potentially losing paid work from game companies, what they’re REALLY complaining about is YOU, the consumer, not paying them through the price you pay for the product. Imagine the possibilities that AI opens up for small studios who can’t afford to pay an entire team of artists. AAA studios might finally lose their monopoly on graphical fidelity and beauty, but I’m supposed to care about a few people being put out of work by technology? Technology has been putting people out of work for 200+ years. Take a look the next time you see a combine harvester and think about all the rural peasants who could be doing exactly the same thing at far higher costs. Then consider how tragic this really is the next time you buy a loaf of bread for next to nothing.

I dont think the controversy is the reason the game is doing more numbers. Same with Hogwarts legacy, most people didnt even know that there was a boycot. Palworld looked scammy, so people waited for others to check out the game. Since people were expressing they were having more fun than expected, and the game acrually worked, it just gave the OK for the people waiting and word of mouth spread. Hogwarts legacy is Harry Potter, Harry Potter is still a very popular IP. Thats the reason that did well, even people who dont game on a regular bought the game. Most people arent tuned into any of it and a lot of people IRL arent as petty as us chronically online people. They buy things they want for the most part. Likelyhood of people spending 60+ bucks just to own the libs IRL isnt a gigantic group. People genuienly wanted to play / own things that are or resemble ( in Palworlds case) the things they like. Giving soo much credents to " they did it out of spite" is unwarrented in my opinion. HL was bound to do numbers and people, just as stated, have been WAITING for a Pokemon like game thats what Pokemon is doing. And importantly, Palworld isnt full price. The only reason Im playing it is because of the creatures that remind me of Pokemon. Havent touched the last game, I did buy Pokemon Arceus because it was doing something different

Nintendo not fully own The Pokemon Company, they had a lot of shares, which gives them the power to retain pokemon games to their platforms, but the IP and Intelectual Propierty is owned by the Pokemon Company, and is shared by Nintendo, Game Freaks and Creatures. The reason why Game Freak games are so obsolete is because they are not under the Nintendo filter of quality. They had support from Nintendo, of course, but in the end they are not constrain by Nintendo fine standars. If someone have to sue Palworld it has to be The Pokemon Company, not Nintendo alone. For example, you don't see Nintendo in the credits of Detective Pikachu film, only The Game Company, even if is based on a game launched on to a Nintendo console exclusively. Is a weird relationship, but is understandable. At the begining the creators of Pokemon wanted money to develop the IP, but they also wanted to retain intelectual propierty over Pokemon. And Nintendo wanted the exclusivity to their consoles because they know Pokemon will be an incredible hit, so they made an agreement that last until today. So please, don't say "Nintendo" when is really "The Pokemon Company"

I hope Nintendo sees the embarrassment that this is. An indie studio has taken their monster capture and fighting genre and made the gameplay loop so tight and fun with so little set dressing. No real towns, very basic dungeons, and no actual story line or lore at all. This is an absolute disgrace for the largest entertainment franchise IN THE WORLD to be shown up in their core medium like this. It's very different from pokemon games obviously but that's kind of the issue isn't it? Pokemon has one of the strongest IPs of all time and every single release it is wasted on games that are still hardstuck on a gameplay loop defined by the limitations of 1990s handheld gaming. Whatever fate befalls Palworld I hope that this is a wakeup call to just how insanely out of date pokemon is these days.

I’m a professional concept artist and I’m pretty against AI art, specifically the use of copyrighted material in the use of training sets. In our system you can’t just take copyrighted material and use it for any purpose you want. If your tech requires that theft to work, than your tech isn’t valid. That said, I do think AI trained properly/legally and used well is an interesting idea and I’m sure will eventually find a very useful roll. I think that your take on AI is one of the better ones out there. AI has its place, but the rights of creators can’t be ignored either. I agree, “cancel” doesn’t make sense as a blanket thing, it’s really important with AI to drill down to the specifics and not “cry wolf” over nothing.

Yeah, why can't they just fork a copy of one of these generative AIs and feed it only art produced in-house and have it make models based on that? Sure, sample sizes are orders of magnitude lower but it also narrows the styles it's able to replicate this ensuring that any assets produced should remain in line with the established aesthetics and style.

Yeah, plus there is a TON of stuff in the public domain to use to augment. In fact, a huge roll of the public domain is to allow for this sort of thing. AI was careless and overstepped, and now they don’t want to back up and do it right. The tech is cool, but needs to be developed properly. I actually kinda hope what we see are individual AI that artists can train on their own work so they can have an AI “buddy” that works along with them. I think AI could be amazing if done responsibly and not just trying to shortcut through.

@@matthewmanghi5765That's literally what I was thinking myself. IIRC the current AI models are huge resource hogs, so I guess we're waiting on shrinking down the processor and power requirements before it's feasible for everyone and their grandma to just buy an off the shelf Generator AI Rig at the electronics section of Walmart, but it's early days yet. Hopefully the legislators catch up with developments before things spiral out of control any more than they have already and we actually get to the point.

So just to confirm, if copyrighted material is used as training data, but NOT reproduced verbatim, that's content theft? I guess in that case we should stop training artists on other artists work. Hell, let's train them on only art that the art school produces in house. Any artist who takes inspiration from another artist should be sued clearly. How about musicians who sample other songs or forms of media? Let's arrest them! Let's go round the art galleries and start arresting everyone trying to reproduce the art in their little notebooks too.
@ryanmahrenholz3944

@@blindmown An artist using others art as inspiration for their own is not the same thing as what AI models are doing. There are many cases where peoples art is straight up copied and pasted into a new piece with AI, and if an actual artist did that it would also be theft. There’s a huge difference between inspiration and copying. What I will agree on is sometimes it’s hard to determine where that line is drawn. Edit: and the fact of the matter is regardless of if it is an exact copy, the artist should retain the right to determine if their work is used to train these AI models.

What will honestly make this push through the controversy is the quality of the game, if it's good then all it has to do is continuing to release good content and make players happy. If it fails then it loses steam and if it really is egregious with its "inspiration" than Nintendo will surely sue them. They have tons of resources to do so without blinking. But then you see the people showcasing how the 3D models of the pals were clearly made *from* the models of a recent 3D Pokemon game. Not just inspired, but it becomes obvious the devs of Palworld extracted the 3D models and made modifications. Any self-respecting 3D artist will tell you it's impossible the 3D models of the pals are made from scratch, because you can put the model of a Pal T-posing next to the equivalent Pokemon T-posing and it will match near perfectly in terms of general shape, too much to be a coincidence. It's one thing to take heavy inspiration. It's another to straight-up modify someone else's work and present it as original, and I'm ready to bet my left nut that the devs of Palworld did that. I for one wouldn't support a game that is doing this. It's disrespectful to the 3D artists who actually put a lot of work into their art. Just look at Craftopia, the previous game of those devs, look at how they never bothered finishing it and fixing the many bugs. Ask yourself is this is really what you want. A long chain of morally bankrupt and broken bootleg games with barely any story or logic in them that shamelessly steals from (mainly) Nintendo. I'd rather give my money to actual indies who put in the work to be original with care and respect, thank you very much.

Reasons why I don't think Pokemon or Nintendo care: 1. They would have shut this thing down when the reveal trailer dropped. Nintendo works crazy fast when it feels threatened. 2. Not a single franchise in the world can touch the amount of money Pokemon makes. Palworld can sell 5mil copies, but Pokemon sells nearly 30mil. 3. Palworld is a niche game. Outside of the sweaty gamersphere, no one knows anything about it. Everyone knows Pikachu. 4. The next Pokemon game is already in development. Pokemon has a massive release schedule that is super complex and it won't be stopped just because this knockoff game came out. They probably have their anime, toy production, etc. all already planned out for Gen 10. They aren't going to stop that or mess it up just because of this game. There are too many cogs at work. There could very likely be anime episodes in production for Gen 10. Game dev takes a while. 5. "This provides competition" Except it is a different gameplay loop. All it communicates to Gamefreak is that they can continue to release low effort games (because Palworld is one) and make millions, so long as the little monsters are cute (even more likely because the monsters in Palworld ARE pokemon designs).

Regarding arguing to cancel something, I was against Hogwarts Legacy if J.K. was making money off it, but I didn't go around telling everyone they're transphobic if they played it. Many people probably barely know who J.K. is beyond the author of the books, and owner of the IP, and that's where I feel the backlash came from and probably boosted the sales out of counter spite. This is one reason I don't associate with SJWs, because they don't know how to have reasonable conversations, and just jump to short sighted assumptions of "I'm right, you're wrong and bad if you don't agree."
