I have the same conclusion. I looked around and even with the temptation of the S1 I still think the gh5 hold its own in 2019. Great analysis!
@chrisklugh5 жыл бұрын
Agreed. One day when there are more lens and a S2, it will probably beat the GH5 for video. But hopefully by then we will have a GH6. I think m43 will always lead the tech race for video. The heat FF creates, plus its cost, I don't think there will be a market for a FF GH5. If you wanted that performance, you would get a cini camera.
@keithgoreham14635 жыл бұрын
@@chrisklugh Panasonic didn't lie. The S1/S1R are still cameras first, and video cameras second. Which at least in my case, matches my shooting style. I want good video, but excellent stills are still paramount. I see the GH5 (which I also own) as being balanced the opposite way. Video first, stills second. Thus it never really replaced my Nikon DSLRs in the same way that the S1 increasingly is.
@chrisklugh5 жыл бұрын
@@keithgoreham1463 I get that, and its probably the best FF video camera still yet. I think for those that are used to packing FF gear around, this camera will be great for them. I'm more video and like the smaller lens as I can ninja more stuff in run and gun scenarios like events. Photos are a hobby for me so the GH5 is plenty good enough for me. I wish the screen was an HDR so I don't have to choice to bring my monitor or not; and be damned if I do, damned if I don't use it.

I really wanted the S1H. All the bells and whistles screamed buy me. But, after seeing the L mount and Lenses choice. Hell no. Just going to stick with the Gh5. In 1-2 years, the S1H will dominate as the lens choice will grow.

i've been a photographer for 55 years now starting out with my grandmother's folding 620 kodak around 1963-64. i've worked at a camera store and a newspaper and handled literally hundreds of camera and owned a good percentage of those hundreds as well. but i can tell you without equivocation that the gh5 was the best thing ergonomically and user interface-wise to ever happen to me in photography. it is ultra-configurable while remaining approachable--totally polar opposite to sony and olympus. i needed one button to toggle mono/color. done. i needed one button to switch in a fake teleconverter. done. and i don't even use like 40% of the features on offer such as 4k/6k and burst. but all that is there should i develop the need or the itch. it fits perfectly in my hands and rides on my back hip weightless on a peak sling--usually with the 35-100/2.8 since i live in a semi rural area and at least one critter pops up on my daily walks. in short, i can't say enough good about it. just the other day i bought the new s1 just because (well, no 'because' is needed for a photo geek, right?) i used to shoot 'real' full frame as my default mode in the 35mm film days. in fact, my first full frame was a used $10 argus c3 (brick) around 1965 or so. the s1 with the kit lens (24-105) reminds me of a nikon f3 with motor drive with a 200/2 or the 80-200/2.8 mounted as far as size and weight go, but although it's hard to believe, in some or many ways they've improved ergonomics and ease of use on the s1 even above the gh5 in several areas. there's not as many actual buttons, but they've significantly improved the locations of them. for instance, there's two in front which your ring and 2nd finger can rest on when gripping the camera and there's my mono and tc toggles. and they've moved the /disp/ button to the bottom left rear and it's no longer sunken. i can't explain it, but i constantly activate the /disp/ button on the gh5, yet when i want to press it i have to try 2-3 times. :) and remember i mentioned critters? it's like panasonic was thinking of my use-case when they added animal detection to face and eye detection! anyway, too long already. just wanted you to know i appreciate your recognition of how ground-breaking the gh5 is and i didn't even get into the video stuff. but since i started to teach myself cinematography several years ago my goal was to be able to shoot 4k hdr and display it directly on my 4k hdr tv without editing (which i absolutely can't grasp the paradigm of). and the gh5 fills this need admirably and imo the results are spectacular even if no one but me ever sees them. tks agn, /guy

I'm thinking of going with a GH5 and either the BMPCC 4K or the GH5S. The P4K has the edge in image quality and the flexibility of BRAW, but has issues with battery life and storage. The GH5S is almost twice the price, but uses the same batteries as the GH5, and has all the reliability of the GH5 too. Honestly, the flippy screen is so useful. I might rent a P4K for a week so I can figure out if it works for me.

raksh9 let us know how it goes. BMPCC4K also has brilliant software interface, but I’d prefer the consistency of a single manual of arms and the flexibility of a GH5 and GH5s combo. No right answer here in a vacuum. Whatever works best for you!

Dream camera: GH6 Dual ISO senor such as found in the GH5s for better low light performance. Double (850mbs+) internal recording and we can get the lowest ProRes. This would open the doors for other slow motion performance options: 4k 10bit 60p Another stop or two of IBS could replace a gimbal almost entirely. Somehow put in a VND in front of the senor before the lens. Put it in a bigger body such as the Olympus OM-D E-M1X to make this work and put a $4k price tag and I'm sure it will sell. Best part is, this tech already exist. The question is, do we want this bad enough for Panasonic to make it?

I have three Lumix GH5. G9 , GX9 all take the same lenses. I use the GH5 with DC adapter battery and a good Battery Pack.The battery pack powers the G9 and charges the GX9. I use the G9 as a true hybrid and the photos are great and sharp. The GX9 is used all the time with small prime lenses. 12 F2 Olympus 15 1.7 Leica 42.5 F 1.7 and 75 1.8 Olympus. The GH5 with 12-35 F 2.8 35-100 2.8 and 100 to 300 Panasonic with a German Tripod ring. All this work is Volunteer for local 501C3 groups. I find low light weddings and events the Nikon 810 with dedicated flash that works in the dark. As someone who delivers quality for 60 years, do not depend on Mirror-less cameras for low light action and no light wedding receptions. Low Light Theater work is still best served by my Nikon 810 and a heavy old style 80=200 F2.8 that I bought used and had Nikon rework. I cannot hand hold it and use a sturdy mono-pod. I am starting to use grips on G9 and GX9 and find them to useful for hand holding video and still images. I always shoot 4k 30 p because I can use cheaper cards. External Video capture is on my to do list for next year. I gave the HD recorder to my son and Grandson.

I bought an M43 camera this week, (NOS) it feels right and the buttons are where I expect to find them. It is not a GH5 but the GX8, I have had one for years and bizarrely perhaps felt drawn to having another one. Yes, the auto focus can be wilful but I can live with it. It seems to be that in the video arena we are already at a point where content generators can produce output that exceeds what the consumer can use. As I am writing this I just checked the video resolution on this laptop, 1920 by 1080... it can't do better. A very thought provoking presentation once again, always riveting.

Thoughtful and succinct, I just bought a gh5 with 400 shutter actuation's for less than 1100, what a deal, I have a c100 and a pocket cinema camera 4 k for different work, i love that my investments further forward will feed both micro 4/3rds. Raw workflow is great, but IBIS run and gun and hybrid work is still relevant and brilliant. Rumor has it a new Cinema-centric announcement for Panasonic at the end of the month. GH5s is still too expensive, but if it comes down Ill replace the c100. NDs is the only advantage of the c100 at this point.

Very well said! I’ve been shooting professional video (and some photo) work on my Gh5s and love it! The lack of room for cropping means that nailing composition is important. Now in early 2020 the GH5 still seems to be a good choice as a Hybrid camera. Especially when you count in the lenses avaiable up to this point. Here i have the 10-25mm f1.7 and the 50-200 f2.8-f4 from panasonic in mind. While the first one is expensive and perhaps big for some, it looks very versatile. The other one is smaller and has longer reach than the Oly 40-150, for example. The G9 is also interesting .... damn the choices we have.

Just bought one 🤩🙌... Now it dropped in price to an astonisching 1300 $ , i bought the viltrox adapter + speedbooster to put my canon glass on it . I still gonna hang on to my canon 6D mk II for photography . Althought i'm a astrophotography enthausiast , makes me wonder 🤩 when i hook it up an 24mm f 1.4 glass and shutter at 15 seconds . Thank you for your analyse. I have a GH5 and two GH5S and a lot of lens for them. I,m a videograf to weddings and I,m very happy whith what y can do whith them. Never change for sony or other full frame even Panasonic.

I'm looking at a GH5 used now. The main reason is for the stabalisation and that little trick it has - the slider effect you can program. I'm led to believe that the newer lenses will aid the stabalisation but I'm not sure if that just market hype.

Leica DG Vario-Elmarit 12-60/2.8-4 is a good general utility lens with OIS which works well with Dual IS 2.

The GH6 when it comes out next year needs to do Prores and Proees RAW internally. I'm looking to get a GH5s to go with my GH5.

Lovely breakdown, I almost regret opting for the X-T3 over the GH5 but I'm loving the stills and glass of the fuji so much and I've gotten used to bringing my gimbal and tripod for all video work which makes the X-T3 good enough. One little thing I actually don't like about your talking head videos is the morphcuts, IMO they are way more jarring than just normal hard jumpcuts. It looks like you're trying to hide the cut unsuccessfully, I would just leave those cuts sharp ans it would look much better IMO.

Great video Hugh! Sad I can’t make it to your workshop. Keep doing them, one day I’ll be there! I have a GH5 and G9, heavily influenced by you. Still saving for that 50-200... Thanks for the vid

Hugh thanks for the video - I just bought a GH5 and this video comforts my empty wallet. Gh5S next. That kit ought to last years and years. I don't think we will need any brighter than a gh5S with a f/1.4 or similar lens. It becomes unnatural to see the night any brighter than that. I just wish the footage from the Lumix S1 did not look so good... ultimately, too heavy and big and pricey.

Great analysis! Love my GH5, but I do see where it has it's weaknesses and I guess that is where the A7 III shines. Since for some reason we can't have it all in one camera. I guess a GH5 and an A7 III would be an amazing pair and would be all I would ever need for video and stills. Keep up your wonderful work, Hugh!

The S1 is a better camera though, if you can afford it. Video quality is much better, and that's the consensus from people who own the GH5/5s. Plus, now it has a $400 bonus trade-in promo until June 22nd @ B&H & Adorama, 3-year warranty promo, and all the video specs of the GH5 are coming via the S1 VLOG update in July (for free!), making it a much better all-rounder hybrid than the GH5 since it's a better stills camera as well.

A few years ago when on the fence about buying the GH5 to make a feature film you wrote to me a short but very convincing email urging me to go for the GH5. You wrote something like "It's a choice I'm sure you will never regret." I bought it and indeed that is so. A half year later, I also bought a BMPCC4K which had I still think a superior and more cinematic image. Well, I'm holding on to both of those cameras. However, generally I keep returning to the GH5 mainly because of its versatility and trustworthiness. Once again thanks for the advice. Love the GH5 and love watching your KZbin Channel.

I enjoyed this. I have two GH5s and a Panasonic ENG camera. I agree with most of what you said. For me, at this time, the GH5 is a video workhorse that has few serious limitation.

Great video - How interesting you posted this, I told a few friends of mine recently, that I felt the GH5 hits a sweet spot unlike any camera of its type I've seen. Also check it out, on eBay out of around 265 for sale, only around 41 were used, and none with bodies under around $1,300. So people are hanging on to them.....for good reason as we all know.!

A stabilized gh5s with a higher datarate is what i'd want from a gh6. Maybe panasonic will have an epiphany and add phase detect to their sensors. External recording to an ssd would be welcome (in cases where keying/greenscreen is an issue) The speed of the af doesn't matter if it still hunts randomly.

Same conclusion here as well. I personally enjoy the Fuji X-T3 even more and think it has advantages over the GH5 in some regards today. But hey, this option wasn't available in 2016.

thanks for the spiel. i am a very appreciative subscriber. an audio question about the gh5-do you record dual system or go directly into the gh5? and if you go into the gh5, do you employ the xlr adapter? (hard to get a quality review about the xlr adapter!) as always, thumbs up.

We own and use the XLR Mic adapter for interviews; direct into cam when it’s just me; TASCAM DR-70D when it’s 3 or 4.
