An honest, extremely well-articulated account of the G95. Watching this video tipped the scales for me in deciding to actually purchase this camera. I have never been more impressed by a piece of technology. Ergonomical, functional and solidly built camera, I have no regrets. I photograph birds for pleasure and have had calendars made from the images shot with the G95. The AF or lack thereof has made me a better photographer for using manual focus 99% of the time.

I like that Lumix is not giving up their micro 4/3ds now after their introduction of their full frame system. It seems that they are aiming for the enthusiast and light-pro market with these cameras. That's very good. It gives at least enthusiast like me more options and promises for even more options in the future in spite of a shrinking market due to the introduction of the cameraphones. Thanks again for a brilliant camera evaluation! :)

I'm glad too, as someone who's invested in a GH5 and GH5S. I really think these two units are absolutely brilliant cameras, and as a set, they're great. Each one fills in the other's weaknesses. I think they're pulling a Fujifilm, in a way. Fujifilm has their crop sensor XTs and their absolutely monstrous medium formats, with nothing in between. Panasonic has their MFT cameras and their comparatively ginormous FF cameras. (Seriously, they're ridonkulously huge, like almost the size of a Canon 5D Mark IV). There's no APS-C line in between because... honestly, why bother? Their MFT range is full of extremely affordable bodies and pro bodies, and their FF line is all cadillacs. It's a beautiful setup really, and a a wise way to segment their market.

Thank you for a calm, and calming review and comparison -- no hype or hyperbole! The current crop of all "major" names in the digital camera world are amazing compared to the camera offerings just 5 years ago -- so bashing any one manufacturer or model just isn't a viable approach. Each has its strengths, and as you say, it really comes down to how you use the equipment -- what you want to achieve. I bought a G85 in mid-2018 for family photos, family video and slowly branching into "production" with video. I don't regret my choice at all -- and it was what I could afford. Have gotten a few native lenses and a *ton* of vintage glass and adapters. And I still love it! Am I jealous of some features of other cameras -- yeeesssss -- am I jealous of newer Lumix cameras (G9, G95) -- yeeeessssss. But that does not make *my* camera any less usable. Thanks for your approach and your appreciation of good quality equipment -- regardless of the source.

At first I was going to be a little ticked off that I just bought a G9 and this camera was going to be a baby G9. Then I heard no dual card slots, weather sealing or 4K60 and breathed a sigh of relief. The G9 has to be larger to include these features and to also have a comfortable grip. But the G95 will be a good option for people that want a smaller camera with more features and better tech than a GX85.

Thoughts: G95 crops significantly at 4k - the crop is a very important consideration for vloggers, especially since the two camera bodies now cost the same. G9 doesn't come with vlog, but it's an option, and the time record limit is easily overridden on the G9. My only gripe with the G9 is no 120fps 1080p recording with decent codec. Other than that, it beats the G95 on everything but a bit of weight. The G95 would be my choice if not for the 4k crop. I'm going with the G9. Slightly different conclusion on my end, but thank you for the great review!

Only things that bum me out about it after tons of research are: - Price tag is crazy at 1200 USD - STILL EXTRA CROP ON 4K 30 (compared to 1080p) still don't know how much, the G85 had an extra 20% crop in 4k - no 4k 60 - I can actually live with that - Slow mo is set at 120 fps and not 180 fps, it's without auto focus and no audio. - nobody knows yet of they have added auto ISO in manual movie mode (this was missing on the G85) will update when I will know if it's there. - Can't see a body only price tag which is much needed for all of us upgrading from the G85 abd already own the 12-60
@dfusselman5 жыл бұрын
From DP review: The G95 essentially takes the fifth option here: using a central chunk of its sensor to capture roughly the number of pixels required to produce its 3840 x 2160 video. This isn't very demanding in terms of processing, so its rolling shutter performance is good and you'll very rarely need to worry about overheating. But there are significant drawbacks, too The first is angle of view. The roughly 4100 x 2300 pixel region of its 20MP sensor that is used for 4K is pretty small: imposing a significant 1.25x crop. This means that the 12mm 'wide' end of the kit zoom ends up giving an angle of view closer to a 30mm lens on full frame, rather than the usefully wide 24mm equiv. it'll give you in stills mode. That's likely to be a major creative restriction.

So I’ve had the g85/g80 since 2017 and like it a lot but there are a few things I didn’t like that makes me want to upgrade. I hike a lot and hate to not been able to use a power bank to charge my batteries. And the fact that it doesn’t have 4K/60 p. I know most cameras doesn’t support 4K 60p but I still want it. Now the g95 doesn’t have it either but the g9 does. The dilemma is that here in Sweden I can get the g9 body for the same price as the g95 body. The g9 is at a 200$ discount right now. I like the smaller form factor but the g9 has many features that I like better then on the g95. G9 has less crop and uses the full sensor and should give a slightly better image when shooting 4K. The g9 has 4K/ 60p. And also has some better specs overall. The only advantage to get the g95 is the slightly smaller form factor. What do you think? At the same price which camera should I get?

No 4K60? No dual SD? Small battery? No improved video AF? I stick to my G9 (with unlimited recording hack, I film longer than 30min on G9 with no problem) for now. Is Panasonic never going to fix video AF performance? They really don't care? G9 sells $999 in authorized Panasonic sellers new, $800 on second hand. I wish Panasonic would officially unlock unlimited recording on the G9 with a firmware update now that Europe doesn't have a 30min camcorder tax anymore. Is Camera Conspiracies correct when he says that many of Fuji's lenses (like the 16mm f1.4) aren't optimized for video autofocus usage? Is it true that Fuji video AF is jittery with those lenses when doing video autofocusing?
@3BMEP5 жыл бұрын
The difference between the G9 and G95 when it comes to unlimited recording is in part a function of the lower power draw of the G95's processor. Some of the FujiFilm lenses ARE in need of an update to be optimal in video use.
@charbax5 жыл бұрын
@@3BMEP but it's the same sensor as on the G9, right? So why didn't they just bring in the same CPU/DSP and the same battery as on the G9? Seems they downgraded a whole bunch and I think that's against the consumer. The camera market is hurting enough, camera companies don't need to inflict unnecessary harm to their own products, just in some kind of way to avoid self-cannibalization, that's just not going to help them grow their sales reach.

My new G85 arrived in the mail today. The same day that Panasonic announces the G95. Ugh! Honestly...the G85 is such a great camera on its own, I can't really see a huge reason to return it. IMO, the biggest advantages for the G95 over the G85, as a hybrid pro/amateur camera are the 120fps video and the V-LOG. Although these are awesome features, I think I'd just splurge the extra $300 at that point and get a GH5, and get all of the fantastic extras that come with that. Point is, I'll be keeping the G85 that I received today. If I find I'm pushing the limits of this camera, I'll go straight for the GH5 and remove all creative limits :) The new G95 looks like a fantastic camera, but I just find that the leap to the GH5 is so short, you might as well just go for it. If you're just starting out, the low price point of the G85 makes it a total steal and is not too different from the G95! Just my opinion. Excellent first look review.

Seems it has the sensor and processor from the GX9 not the G9. The 4K crop is a killer for me, it means you lose another stop of light and those nice prime lenses don’t look so nice cropped. Best thing about the GH5 after the GH4 was no crop in video. Really I think Panasonic should have put the G9 no crop and 4K60 to compensate for the lack of AF.

Very exciting bit of camera - the Gxx line of Panasonic cameras are my favourite hybrid ergonomically and from a lens lineup and functionality perspective, with that DSLR-like grip, but a shallower main body. Honestly the best middle ground since it accommodates anything from small primes to medium-big telezooms very well. Not quite a pocket shooter nor a pro size body, but so much versatility comes with that. Really appreciate the fact that Panasonic have moved the mic socket and added the Canon-style spinny wheel at the back for better image preview, some of the only things I really could've wanted improved on my G80/85. Very curious about potential improvements in IS, AF and detail/noise (after sampling down to 16MP for fair comparison to the predecessor).

Considering the pricing, I think the choice is between the G9 and the G95. The G95 might be the better deal, esp. if you need a lens. However, all things considered, I'm thinking that the G85 is totally the best value. Don't know how much better the 20 megapixel sensor is over the 16 megapixels of the G85? As of now, I'll keep my G9, but I do think the G85 might be the best value in the market right now.

@@lanceevans1689 I also just ordered a G85 that arrived today. No way I'm giving it up. The G95 is $500 more, but has worse crop, it's 120fps is like diet Pepsi slow mo - it confirms to 30fps instead of 24. The biggest advantage to the G95 is the VLOG and that's just not worth $500 to me. Cine-D does a great job. I'll use those savings to get more equipment. Hugh, Keep the great analysis. After watching many similar gear vlogs I feel I need to state something many other viewers may agree with. Most of us are not vloggers, we are strictly photographers who sometimes also use the video features (which is important too). The main reason I like the video features is that many of those items apply to still photography too (flip screen for instance is critical in many cases as is a good evf). And I do shoot at least some video in all of my field work. Do you think this emphasis on the use of a camera for vlogging as opposed to photography may take away from the message? After all, for every great vlogger (ie, you) there must be well over 1,000 photographers (not vloggers) and yes, I know from your work that you are a great photographer too. Thanks.

UK street prices for the G9 and G90 are roughly the same.

I understand. Pixel shifting, no 4K crop, mongo EVF, 6.5 stops IS for the G9; no recording limit, smaller body and things like sequence composition for the G95...

Hi! What did you shoot this preview on? Looks phenomenal. Maybe it's more the lighting than the camera...but man... this talking head segment REALLY looks good. EDIT... You answered it... The GH5. Man, that camera is good.

Nice little camera :-) Holding thoughts is hard! On another tangent, While enjoying the general setup of your video, I was reminded of Jay Leno's "Tonight Show", when the giant floating head would appear and cause Kevin Eubanks to corpse with laughter. This is not a sniffy criticism, Hugh; I like everything about your studio and delivery. Thanks again,

Can you maybe check: Is there synchro scan or only flicker decrease included? (Synchro scan = freely shutter angle / shutter speed - Flicker decrease is only giving you 1/50 or 1/60 and "Auto".)

AustrianGeek No shutter angle.

@@3BMEP Ok. So thats a feature then which stays in the GH class. Thx. ^^ (I expect that you meant, that there is also no freely adjustable shutter speed in single digit increments.)

Unless you are shooting at night or vast deep landscapes, m4/3 is a perfect sensor and camera size.
@vladimirpeskov67565 жыл бұрын
You have to remember - for years, pro camcorders had tiny 1/4th inch sensors. People today are so picky. M4/3 is leaps and bounds ahead of camcorders that cost $15,000 just a 8-9 years ago. So even for low light I think they're great.
@overnightdelivery5 жыл бұрын
@@vladimirpeskov6756 Yeah m43 actually outperforms early generations of Full Frame cameras in low light. It's always advantageous to have the 2 stops of extra light Full Frame gives you. But it really only matters in situations where you are trying to freeze the action in poor lighting. And in lighting that poor, even full frame photos will look flat. Just not quite as noisy. But then you can run into shallow depth-of-field issues where your image will not be in focus. So FF is not worth it unless you are shooting it highly critical paid jobs that demand every ounce of image quality.

Hi Hugh I notice you use the 30mm sigma in a ton of your videos (which always look fantastic). I do a lot of self tape auditions for myself and other actors on my GH5. I use the 42.5 Lumix 1.7 for pretty much all of them but sometimes find that when I want a bit more upper body in the shot the actors have to move a little too far away for my space. the 25mm 1.7 I find a little too wide and gets too much background in or I need the actor really close to camera. Do you find the 30mm 1.4 a superior lens to the 42.5? Have you noticed a difference in autofocus performance compared to native glass? I use face detect autofocus as I am usually the reader and the camera op at the same time and the actors do tend to move forwards and backwards enough where autofocus is important. Also, just curious what f-stop you do these vids at on the sigma? Thanks for any insight you can share with me :)
@3BMEP5 жыл бұрын
Austin Ball the 42.5 punches way above its weight class, but although we have one we rarely use it. I typically use the 30/1.4 around f/2.5 in the bat cave with manual focus. This gives me a little front/back wiggle room, with NO possibility of telltale contrast detect AF wobble. We just swapped out our Sony a6300 for an a6400 as our b-cam, and with its outstanding AF, the flip-over screen and E 50/1.8 it’s tough to beat as a one man band camera. But take a look at Gerald Undone’s vid on GH5 AF settings; pick up the 30/1.4 because it is spectacular for the price and will address your framing, and you should be good to go.

Can you convince Panasonic to add 1080p 120 fps and VLog in a firmware update to my G85? I'm not holding my breath.

The Panasonic lens (not Leica) do a fantastic job. I think they are perfect for about 95% of users. And much cheaper.
