In 1993 Officine Panerai set its sights to expand beyond supplying its watches exclusively to the military and entered into the civilian market. The first series of watches featured two models, the 5218-201/A Luminor Logo and the 5218- 202/A Marina Militare.
The dial is what makes this watch one of the most rare examples of the 201/A model. This watch has what is known as a ‘non-matching’ dial, where the indices and numbers have aged differently from the lettering and hands. This was the result of a resin placed over the tritium luminescent material that turned orange. The varnish was changed partway through the production due to this discoloration. The exact number of these dials made before the varnish was changed is not known, but it is a small percentage of the only 840 201/A’s produced.
