So, I own the game, and v1.3 just dropped. I'm reading through the patch notes, and the changes cover some of the complaints I've heard made by you, as well as several others. NEW: - Episode 0 - Super Weapon Mode - New gameplay options: rumble, classic reticle, auto-aim zoom, HUD toggle, performance mode (60FPS) - Cheatcodes in the main menu allowing the player to cheat in a campaign (god mode, infinite credits, super weapon mode ) - Gyroscope controls IMPROVEMENTS - SFX system and sounds rework - Multi-button fire (A and B) - Input lag removed from all actions - Camera rotation speed increased - Easier and more responsive targeting system - Full options access trough [sic] pause menu - Blue Dragon motion re-work - Start language based on console account language - New, reworked Pandora's Box is now available after beating the game at any difficulty In addition to all of this, an earlier patch added a rearranged soundtrack, courtesy of Saori Kobayashi herself. I don't know what your policy is on *re-*reviewing games, but I think that this is one that definitely could use another look at in the future, especially if the dev team keep making changes like this.

Yeah definitely, other reviews felt more harsh than necessary, though I don't think I can blame them too much for it either. For a game that's remained dormant on it's native console for over two decades, I can understand why a reviewer who loved the original would come at a remake so critically.
@TheAufziehvogel4 жыл бұрын
GameXplain review was rushed BS. Sorry, but these guys hade a mad schedule here on KZbin and reviewing a game on the day it comes out while playing it for the first time after releasing another 5 videos this day is just insane. SLX's review here is fantastic. No Fanboy-Hyperbole but still critical in a few points but always a fair view. Game is on my Watchlist and I may had bought it a few hours ago til I learned there is Panzer Dragoon Orta on the Xbox Store via Microsoft backawards compatibility. Never had the chance to play this, so this comes first. Also includes as a bonus the first game (PC-Port).
@barc0deblankblank4 жыл бұрын
It is. The lack of background research on the subject matter is evident. They should have started off with studying Moebius' work on Arzak, before setting on this art direction (or lack thereof). Panzer Dragoon isn't merely a 3d shmup on a dragon. It's a living, breathing world with very deep roots. The devs, constrained as they might have been, skipped on doing their homework. My issues aren't technical with the game, as much as they are artistic. For example, details such as the dragon's motion, escape the grasp of the devs in this remake. Notice how in the old one the tail and wings move in tandem, but opposite to each other's direction, giving a sense of balance and realism to the beast. I was looking forward to this, but I'm afraid I'll stick to emulating the original one. We've waited 25 years, for this? What a missed opportunity.

Excellent review, and nice attention to the small differences that made the original so distinct! It would be a great homage to include the original game as an emulated unlockable, including a CGI gallery, for all of the remakes coming out nowadays. Splatterhouse on PS3 did exactly that. It looks amazing, but I do agree with your nitpicks. I also have one of my own: the dragon's animation seems so robotic and choppy when it moves back and forth. It looks like the developers were trying to figure out how to make him as maneuverable as possible while still looking "realistic" by having him bob up and down as he flies. But, it's not even a matter of translating the Sega Saturn animation to a modern game engine. Panzer Dragoon Orta did it is more than 15 years ago, it had the blue dragon as an unlockable character, and it looked and played so much better. I get it that source code gets lost - we may never see an HD port of Panzer Dragoon Saga - but all they had to do was use Orta as a template for look and feel. No code reused, just "hey, let's recreate THIS." This game feels so close to "just right," but it seriously needed about a month or two to iron out the rough patches. I'll stick with my copy of Panzer Dragoon Orta. Also, that dragon roar in the remake IS so weak. The Saturn one still gives me chills to this day, and this was a game I played back when it first came out.
@miguelroman42944 жыл бұрын
Agreed! Those were my thoughts exactly. I don't own the remake but I do own a copy of orta which has pd1 as bonus unlockable game. Just play 5 hours of orta and it will unlock in the appendix section.

They did put Virtual Racing only on the switch though and the last time Daytona USA was sold to us to the mainstream market was in 2011 with the HD version on the PS3/360 (Compatible with Xbox One). And after that that's about it. Yes I am aware that the 2017 Daytona USA Championship was made but I don't talk about that... Matter of fact I still holding a grudge about it after these years when it was released to arcades, off topic I know. Anyways, SEGA need to release a lot of Arcade AM2/3 games for modern systems including the PC. Some IP's like Sega rally may be lost unless they do a more original style with cars than licensed ones. But what's stopping them for Sega releasing there own IP's or even making sequels at this point? And no, Blitz HD don't count.

It's funny how the technical limitation also guides aesthetic. Part of the original visual appeal, to me, was that desolate, infinite horizon. It made the world seem like a gigantic liminal space. It's also a trap for the remakers, cause if they re-made the game barren people would complain. I think the newer version has too many details, most of the time it feels cozy.

As good as this is, there's NO WAY they won't make a Panzer Dragoon Saga remake!!! I welcome ALL attempts to keep Sega's franchises alive and kicking!! Thanks SLX!!

Good review. I agree about the slow lock-on targeting, but maybe because better frame rate, lasers seem to burst faster to locked enemies. On default, camera is in the nearest position to blue dragon so in mid to far range options (adjust with r-stick) give much more room to move and dodge enemy fire.

As a long time panzer dragoon fan i enjoyed this remake but it definitely needs tidying up in places which the incoming patch will hopefully take care of. Good review SLX !! Cant wait for zwei !!

For me less is always more. The original Panzer Dragoon looked beautiful an unique. This remake just looks like everything else.

I'm a massive fan of the original, but the laggy and unresponsive controls (as you mentioned) and the weird "bouncing" dragon killed this for me. I called Nintendo for a refund...something I've never done on a digital purchase before. Hopefully patches can fix it, but wow, I was shocked how shitty it played.

Thing is did they refund you?

@Icarus Kid So, the game is on sale right now for $6, at that price I figured I’d give it another go. It’s MUCH better with the 1.3 patch. They pretty much fixed all my complaints, and the 60fps mode looks pretty awesome, but I’ve only played in Handheld so far. $6 for 60fps portable PZ? Worth it.

@Icarus Kid I mean, if you want it to look like a PS4 game, you’ll be disappointed. For a $6 Switch game, I’m cool with it. For me, Panzer was always about the amazing music & great boss fights - now I have that on my Switch and it plays/feels good.

@Icarus Kid I'm reallllly picky about lag, and to be honest, most of these collections play great. Most of the time, noticeable lag that affects gameplay is caused by the TV itself. Post processing modes add lag. Turning a modern TV to "game mode" or "fast mode" usually makes things feel nice and snappy like we remember it. As for Panzer - I agree, I'd LOVE just the Saturn graphics at 60fps, that would be amazing. For the time being though...for only $6, I'm totally cool with this version of PD to play on my Switch. I can bust out my Saturn if I want the real deal. :)

@Icarus Kid I've been gaming since games came into existence, so I'm pretty in tune with what they're supposed to feel like...but I guess I have a different "I'm out" level than you. I agree the the MMX collection is awful....but I'm pretty happy with most of the retro offerings. NES/SNES apps & the Konami collections feel good to me (although the NES palette sucks). The Sega stuff is by M2...I only have Outrun on my Switch, abut all their Sega 3D games on 3DS were awesome. I got the Genesis Collection on Switch, and I could TASTE the lag, it was so bad...if you play Sonic on that collection & then an Ages/M2 Sonic, it's night and day. I play most of my HD retro on FPGA systems, and they play/feel just as I remember.

Mate I thought exactly the same about the blue dragons scream from the beginning 😂 I think it’s a great game overall

This makes me think a Switch version of Rez would be worth doing as well. Though PSVR Rez would be hard to beat.

Man I totally agree with you on the review. It feels good but it still doesn't feel like a Saturn version. I wish the first level at least had like the first stage replicated.

I really like this game, it's clear that the people who made it had a lot of love for the original. It bodes well for the House of the Dead remake they have coming, that should work well with joycons on Switch. Level 4 is as difficult as it was on Saturn too. I also enjoyed the way the dragon flaps around, makes it feel more immersive. I think the critics are being way too harsh on this

Super Nintendo Mii the critics are nostalgia impaired, so of course they are being this harsh, and still they recommend it.

That was a good dragon roar. They chose wisely. (edit) after seeing it side by side, I see what you mean about the dragon roar. I still like the dragon roar in the remake, but yes, the feelings from the dragon are very different.

PS2 version would also be good to include in the comparison.
