Ah, Catholic Productions, you ended that one too quick (though what was there was informative). I understand this parable was a rare instance where early Church interpretation has given way to more modern interpretation. If what I heard was correct, while the broader point about neighbor is retained, the earlier interpretation included an allegory of the Samaritan for Christ (fulfilling the law and the prophets, paying the bill, and then promising to return and pay more if owed).

Something topical from the time of Jesus in context, would be the fact that the judeans did not acknowledge the Samaritans as sons of their own people whom the Torah would require them to love as themselves. It could be speculated strongly that Jesus did not hold that view.

Jesus actually never answered the lawyer's question.. The parable indicated that the Samaritan is the good neighbor. So Jesus effectively says : "Don't worry about who is your neighbor...YOU must BE the good neighbor...."

The point is how can we attain eternal life? Jesus gives that eternal life to a Samaritan over the Priest and Levite because of the love and compassion that the Samaritan showed to an individual that reviled him. Jesus changes and perfects love according to the Spirit, not the law which would have rendered the Priest and the Levite unclean according to the Law of Moses.
