I grew up in The Pas in the 1940's and 1950"s, attended Sacred Heart School and The Pas Collegiate (later Margaret Barbour Collegiate), parents had a farm just across the small bridge in the Carrot Valley. The place has changed a lot since then.

tonyberezowecki, I'm one of those nerdy people who gets really curious when I see a place name in the US or Canada that's less than easy to pronounce correctly on the first guess. I'm from northern IL, and in the early part of this century, I drove up to The Pas to catch the train to Churchill, so I know how to pronounce that. However, I stumbled across the Pasquia R. on this video. I'm assuming it's at least "in the ball park" with pass-KEY-uh or pah-KEY-uh. I tried both Wikipedia and google translate, but neither gave that info. Thanks/Dzięki for your help.

@@jimgreen5788 Well, Jim, I'll not be of much help to you. I don't know the correct pronunciation but I always just say, PASS-KWA. Best regards, Tony

Robert Davis, back in '87 I was on a ridiculously long solo trip around the Pacific, and one of my stops was there in Australia for about a month. I flew into Perth from Singapore, hit all of the states/territory, then left via Sydney on the way to Auckland. You hail from a beautiful country.

Driving, W, F, I was up there back maybe 20 years ago, from which I boarded the train to Churchill. Recently, I saw some places on the map I have questions about. But first, what is the meaning of 'pas'. Usually Wikipedia is great at revealing these local tidbits, but not this time; the 2nd. is re. the pronunciation of what I assume is quite similar to Pas (either pass-KEY-uh or pah-KEY-uh), but again, Wikipedia dropped the ball. I'm referring to the Pasquia R. Thanks.
@happyzillas1 Жыл бұрын
Hi Jim, The pronunciation is like a "paw" on a dog. Also, During the years of New France, La Vérendrye, the first western military commander, directed the construction of Fort Paskoya near here. It was named after the people of the Pasquia River. For years the settlement was called Pascoyac, then sometime later shortened to the French version - Le Pas. It is hard to figure out why it was given this name though because 'pas' in French means 'not'. So, I'm not 100% sure, but more than likely the nickname for Pascoyac. Thanks for watching!

I haven’t personally lived in The Pas but, my grandparents have! According to them, it’s literally one of the most friendliest towns you’ll ever visit. Apparently it has everything you need but still gives that small town feeling. So judging by their review I think they liked living there
