Hey everyone!
This is my tribute video to Neil Peart, who left us exactly 3 years ago, on Jan 7th 2020. He’s been my first great influence in becoming a full time musician, as I am today, beginning with his unique drumming vocabulary and going down to his deepest reflections as a magnificent writer and human being.
To pay him a tribute, I chose the song “The Pass” from the Presto album, 1989, because it's always been one of the most beloved songs by the band and also by me. The music of this song was written as a consequence of the inspiration coming from the powerful lyrics written by Neil, making it an exception in the band's usual creative flow.
I wrote down the full transcription and I’m sharing it with you, you’ll find it here: 9082147c-58b2-...
The transcription is an adaptation I made to what Neil actually plays on his huge hybrid drums in order to make it playable and enjoyable by everyone on a standard drum set, like the one I’m playing in this video.
I kindly remind y'all that this video isn’t meant to be anything else than me playing a song that I love, from a band that I love, just sharing this love with you, thinking you might find interesting to understand how he plays one of the drum parts he admittedly took the most time to compose. I don’t want to pretend to play like him, I never have, I don’t wanna pretend to have his sound, his intensity, he was just being himself behind the kit: I am just a huge fan enjoying his mastery.
This song is very well composed and arranged, but is not as difficult to play as other songs by Rush, so don’t be afraid to give it a try, even if you’re still in your beginning years of drumming.
For all the music inspiration, for your deep thoughts, for your being the most gentle soul, I have to say: thank you Neil, from the bottom of my heart. You are truly missed.

For all the gears-addicted among you, here’s some technical stuff you may enjoy.
The drum set is a vintage George Hayman, 1969, with a 22x14” bass drum, 14x5” snare drum, 13x10” rack tom and a 16x16” floor tom.
The hi-hat is a 15” Zildjian K sweet, the ride cymbal is a 21” Avedis Zildjian Sweet, the left-side crash is a 16” Zildjian A custom, the right-side crash is a 20” Zildjian K cluster crash.
I recorded the drums with four mics, using the same technique described in this video: • Want OPEN and NATURAL ...
I played along the original track without drums, that I obtained using Moises to remove them.
