Oh man. Having grown in a really remote location, the moment he started to allude about the dangers of being alone, I knew where it was going. We had so many rules and practices about letting others know where you were, having buddy systems so you wouldnt be stranded if you got hurt or attacked by something, a whole list of scenarios we had to account for even as kids- I enjoy time alone doing hikes just like this still, but it's so right that spending time in solitude or preferring solitude doesn't mean you won't need others at some point, or that your actions won't have a ripple effect on your community around you. We are a social species, and it's almost impossible to entirely detach yourself from others. But it is really a unique experience in self discovery to be alone with yourself. Even talking about being alone, there's something communal in knowing that that kid in South Africa was experiencing the same wonder at the mist clearing up in the morning sun as I was as a kid in northern Canada. Loved this style of video! I realized when Ren was on the Imp and Skizz podcast that I could listen to him talk about anything for hours. And I was right!

1. I know almost nothing about South Africa so I love your narration about it. 2. I grew up in the Mojave Desert and I believed I was an X-men and I could control the weather. I too took many adventures even as an older teenager. Unfortunately, I was bullied often and I would further escape into my fantasy. It did turn into maladaptive daydreaming so I would caution younger people to research this type of daydreaming and not to fall into this trap. Thank you for the stories Ren!

Rendog, i gotta say, its so nice to hear about a kindred spirit. from the time i was 7 to around 14-15, i was always wandering out in the woods, and where i grew up, we also had a HUGE ravine that i would go down in. I was the sole survivor of a crashed space ship, trying to make due with the supplies i could find, down in that ravine. chopping down vines to use as rope, building primitive structures, trying to figure out how to trap small animals...

I got into a depression some years ago, and that made me cut off contact with nearly everybody. It took me a long time to realise how it had an effect on them and our relationships. I'm still making my way out of depression these days, but now, I send messages. I make sure they know I'm okay, or that they can help when I'm not. That was a beautiful tale, Ren.

Depression is awful. Been living with treatment resistant depression for probably 30 years. Keeping my mind busy with hobbies, going outside, and having at least one trustworthy person to talk to helps a lot. Even a short walk multiple times a day helps a lot. Don't let yourself isolate inside. Even if you don't want to spend time with people that's okay but spend your alone time outside or doing something to keep your mind and/or body busy. If you're not the loner type then make sure you force yourself into socializing. If you like being alone even when you're not depressed then you can be alone just don't be inside doing nothing. If you need a friend and you're +18 you can always message me. If not that's okay too. Hope you feel better.

Ren, my man, you have a genuine talent for storytelling. Telling a story in a way that is coherent, interesting, and has a message, off the cuff? That's impressive stuff. I also enjoy the (perhaps unintentional) resonance of using a story about the importance of making sure others who care about you know where you are when you go off on your own for a while as the episode that gets uploaded automatically while you're away on vacation so all the followers who love you don't have to wait for you to come back :). Looking forward to the other episodes in this series, and above all I hope you're having a good time in South Africa with your fam

I have a very similar off the beaten path story where I suggested to my friends we take a detour for a bit. We dropped down past these boulders to go exploring and when we came back to the boulders to climb back up, we realized they were covered in moss and moister. So no matter how hard we tried we kept slipping off them. That same panic of being lost or stuck that ren felt crept in. We had to go around the mountain to find a way back. The incline of the cliff kept getting steeper as we walked. We eventually reached a sheer cliff and decided to climb up. The rocks were dried from being in the sun, unlike the canopy covered boulders. The only problem was that were free climbing and had no experience. we only needed to climb up 15 ft at most, but falling meant most likely death or broken bones. We couldnt find a good handhold to get to the top, but my friend put his back on a dead tree stickling out of the cliff and shimmied up a few feet. Then he pushed off it to grab the clifftop, and pulled himself up. I then tried it, but couldnt do the last push off out of fear. My friend who was on top now laid prone and grabbed my arm and helped pull me up. Then we both did that same to his brother who was with us. All in all it was exhilarating. almost meeting your death will do that to you. Stupidly I remember wanting to tell my parents about this story, because I was fine, why would they be mad about it... XD

I lived a few miles away from a place called Zoar Valley. Its a forest with a giant cliffs and a creek running through it. Every year kids, teens, and adults get lost and they have to send rescue teams/helicopters because it can be deadly. So just know, even adults get lost in the wilderness

Man this story got me a bit too emotional than I expected XD Life kinda happened that way that I'm very much alone right now, and don't get me wrong, I like being by myself! I got so used to it too that lots of the times it stresses me out being near others for a long while haha, but it has it pros and cons I suppose, for I think I still need a lot of human contact around somewhere, and trying to balance those is.. difficult, most of the times. And coupls days ago, I've lost someone who kept me company while I was being alone, my beloved cat passed away after spending 11 years in our family, and it will take me a while to get used to more alone-ness than before...... So thank you for sharing this story, I actually got very inspired to maybe try and explore the fields around my house (but of course I will tell my mom beforehand so she won't need to run around the fields looking for me in case I get lost haha) And love the road you made!! really makes the base feel more alive :3

I know it's not for everyone and that's okay, but that's how I am and the isolation usually comes from people who don't work that way saying it's strange. You're a great entertainer, and you use a game as a stage and a medium. One of the core rules of outdoor adventuring, like hiking, camping, cross country running, etc, is that you must tell at minimum one person who is not going with you where you are going and how long you intend to be gone. In your story, your friend was able to tell the teachers where you might be because you had gone out there before, but he couldn't tell them exactly where. You did almost the best you could do without asking the faculty. All you would have needed to do was tell him that day that you intended to go over the mountain, and I believe they would have found you sooner than they did.👍

Ren: i had a really average childhood also Ren: tells the most epic thing ever, that he used to go hiking trough nature every week as a 14 year old boy with a sword

I'm sure Ren has heard it before but he is such a good storyteller! He can really draw you in and is so good at holding attention. The loss of the dramatic tension when X came over was funny as it was jarring. This was a great episode!

What a nice story. I can remember being lost in a forest in the middle of nowhere twice as a kid, also no phones or internet but I wasn't alone. One time I had a friend with me and the other time I had the neighbours dog with me I thought the dog might know the way back and she probably did but didnt show me. It really is scary when you're lost and have no way of contacting others

It's ironic that while you're talking about being a lonewolf and not effecting others X comes up to hang out. I do love a good story, don't get me wrong, but interactions with other hermits are priceless.

I started watching you with my youngest daughter season 1 of your lets play and loved your stories. I remember the story of silk worms, your tribute to your grandmother and story about the stairs, the garden for your mom, and the funniest moment... when guardian temples first came out and you blocked yourself in then realized you had mining fatigue and died (season 2). I've missed your stories. Thank you for taking me back in time. Hugs to you and your family

Loved the story. This man almost made me cry while working, I felt the despair of him and the professors when he got lost and found.

Great story Ren. I would add that whenever you embark on an adventure, be sure you know where you came from, so that if things go wrong, you have a strong sense of how to get back to your starting point and do another adventure. This appplies to both physical and other types of adventure!

I have a similar story to Ren. So, my bother is scrapper, he takes leftover pieces of metal from different projects and uses it. A long while back he had a house boat and our family decided to go deep into the Bayou one summer. My family build a cozy cabin from scratch and used some of the leftover trees for firewood. My nephews spent the time wrestling alligators, building Palmetto leave forts, and shooting each other with BB guns. After the camp was built my brother also decided to build a swing and a treehouse for me and the kids. Since there was no plumbing out there, we usually boiled our jugs of water for a bath. While I do remember to Golden retriever going missing and a creepy neighbor from just up the Bayou was talking about how the floods trend to kill the dogs out there.

Listening to your talk about your teenage years reminded me so much of my own. Growing up in the 70’s in a small fishing town in Sth Aust. I had few friends, even now I have few friends. Always was alone most of my youth. Parents were busy with clubs & work. School I would spend break time in the library. Weekends I was out exploring, on my own. Now your Gigacorp still reminds me of the Outer Worlds game. Love it.

This story really means a lot to me, as a very very introvert who has a extrovert mother and sister if kinda hard to remind myself that they don’t enjoy being alone as much as I do, and that they often get worried about me. Geez, thanks ren

The road is meant to be lower level stone, yea? Got an idea. Go with half slabs to indent it and either side now and then make a gradual slope of the " sand" to show where it's been plowed up to expose that lower level stone.

Ren, I haven't watched you for long. I came on board one day last year when you were building the boat race in S9, and you were telling us about the loss of your beloved doggie and of you moving house (I may have cried). I found your story-telling just beautiful, as I have this evening. Thank you for taking the time to show us who you are, through stories. I was able to visualise it and as another lone wolf who cost others some significant worry, I could empathise. Your love of narrative, imagination and adventure of the mind shines through. Please do more - it's an obvious strength that you (and I) gain joy from!

I love story time with Ren. Great episode. I also prefer to be on my own for the most part. But everyone needs others on some level - emotional, logistical, etc. Having the option to be alone is wonderful. Having no access to others can be a nightmare. It's also wonderful that your teacher showed up and greeted you with affection instead of anger. Good teacher. Thanks for sharing your stories, Ren

Ren I love this episode so much, because of the chill vibes, your narration, everything. But I especially love that when I was just listening to this video as a podcast, the sound design of your giga-huts doors, really immersed me in this whole world you have created. It's unlike anything I've experienced with a minecraft build before. It's actually gamechanging

Ren im a fairly new viewer. Started your journey at the beginning of last season. I haven't gotten an episode like this one. And it's SUCH a treat. Your ability to tell a story is unparalleled. You could literally see the entire story playing out as you spoke. You were talking about the sun setting in your story while in game the sun was setting. The timing was perfect. What an important message for so many to hear. Im begging plz do more episodes like this. Oh, THE PATH looks beautiful. And the story was amazing.
