In a time of mourning and anger over the ongoing violence inflicted on Black communities by police in the US and the lack of accountability from national leadership, what is the path forward? Sharing urgent insights into this historic moment, Dr. Phillip Atiba Goff, Rashad Robinson, Dr. Bernice King and Anthony D. Romero discuss dismantling the systems of oppression and racism responsible for tragedies like the murders of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, George Floyd and far too many others -- and explore how the US can start to live up to its ideals. (This discussion, hosted by head of TED Chris Anderson and current affairs curator Whitney Pennington Rodgers, was recorded on June 3, 2020.)
The TED Talks channel features the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes (or less). @1980Punk All lives can't matter until black lives do. The point isn't about saying that black lives are the only lives that matter. It is meant to raise awareness because right now, Black people are being affected the most by this system and that's why we need to change it. I am white, and when I hear, "Black Lives Matter." I agree, and I know my life does as well, but right now, they are facing something that I don't have to face, so I am going to support them and help them, until we are all treated as equal by our system. If the system isn't saying, "All Lives Matter." then we should not either.

Let's say there are 3 races: X, Y and Z. In year 1, race X commits more crimes than Y and Z. This does not in any way prove that race X is more _likely_ to be arrested for crimes, nor that race X is more likely to _commit_ crimes, the only thing it shows is that in year 1, race X committed more crimes - that's it. Proving _why_ they rank higher is very difficult. At the end of the day, naturally, one race will always feature higher than the others but correlation doesn't always mean causation. To fight racism we need to point the finger at _specific_ instances of racism and use evidence to shut it down, not just throw blanket statements out there.

I disagree with you about the difficulty in proving why race X has the highest crime rate. It's rather easy. Race X has the least economic power. Crime and poverty are correlated. People get desperate when they don't have money or opportunity, so they turn to crime. It's true in the United States, in Brasil, in Colombia, all over the world.
@REGGiiEz
@REGGiiEz 4 жыл бұрын
@@johnjohntv1195 To me institutionalized racism comes down to economic inequality and opression, which historically targets black and brown people in the US and all around the Western World. Poverty is often inherited. This is not just because people are born poor but also because they are not provided with the resources they need to overcome poverty. For example: Poor kids are less likely to succeed in school. This is because their parents cannot afford to buy their children extra books or tuition outside of school. Also poor families often do not have the space their kids need to study quietly (like an own room for each kid). This leads to poor people being less educated and not being able to seek higher education. Where poverty there's crime and where's crime there's overpolicing. The more focus police puts on a specific community the more (minor) crimes they will find and the more poor people will face charges. For example: Dispite black people only using cannabis less than 10% more often they are arrested over 2 times for Marijuana possessions than white people. Another interesting fact: Most people currently in jail or prison have not been charged. Poor people also often cannot afford bail or cannot afford an enduring, expensive law suit and are therefore more likely to sign plea-deals without even having commited a crime, which is why blacks are highly overrepresented in prison population (70% of inmates are black). When you keep in mind the economic disadvantages ex-inmates face once their out this completes the bigger picture. Black and brown people are being made into criminals which then serves as justification for actions like "stop and frisk". Police are subliminally trained to be more suspicious of black people, which makes them more cautious and more likely to use excessive force.

The first question we need to ask ourselves is what data supports the claim that systemic racism exist and what data opposes the claim. Then we need to ask ourselves if the data from either side is corrupted or not. Then (if it exist is some form) we have to ask the question Why?. Claims of systemic racism mean that somehow the system is designed to be racist whether intentionally or not. There are studies showing babies to be racist and preferring people that look like them or their parents nypost.com/2017/04/13/your-baby-is-a-little-bit-racist-science-says/ How do you stop something that is ingrained and should you with babies? If you cannot eradicate it what is the theoretical limit? There will always be one-off instances that are not indicative of the system as a whole. Do you need massive reform because of these one-offs that get blown out of proportion?

Thank you for being someone who understands the solution isn’t communism, censorship, and government control over everything. There’s a disturbing number of people who genuinely think that these are the only ways we can fix society even though every attempt has ended in people suffering. We should stop resorting to solutions we’ve already tried that failed and start looking for new ones based on what has worked in the past. This is exactly why politics have become so terrible: everyone is just picking which way to fail instead of looking for new ways to succeed. No one is willing to try and come up with innovative ideas because the majority of relevant conservatives are stuck with their head in a Lost Cause book and the relevant liberals are stuck with their heads in the Communist Manifesto. This is obviously a stretch for both sides, but it’s fairly accurate in the terms of the surprisingly relevant extremes. Despite nearly every instance of socialism and communism failing and causing people to suffer in the process, a surprising number of people cling onto them. They cite that it takes power away from the hands of greedy businesses, but really it just puts it all in the hands of greedy politicians. Meanwhile, conservatives continue writing off things as non-issues until they become so expensive to fix that now their argument is that it would be a waste of money. This is where both sides have failed and need a rejuvenation. The liberals need to bring real issues to the table and propose solutions, while conservatives should make sure that the solution is cost effective and doesn’t set a bad precedent, and just generally keep the government in check without preventing it from acting. This is the dichotomy I think our country can really thrive on if it embraces it. But both sides are more comfortable with arguing and waiting for a majority that will only last a few years anyway. In general we need new ideas to deal with our issues and an improvement to our educational system. We need to stop settling for solutions that don’t work because they look better on paper.

Poor communities can't get a good education for social mobility, a living wage to reduce the incentives for crime, or ocial programs that foster community building. Also, it doesn't help when police have statistically been more biased against dark skinned minorities. Riots are awful and hurt the minority communities as well (Korean and black businesses were devastated by LA riots), but ask yourself why do people resort to such evil?

Whilst this may seem off topic it is a fact that I, as a white man, experience "institutional prejudice" ...coming from other white people. The experiences I have are very similar to those experienced by black people. I have had a number of conversation with black people about what its like to be "treated as an inferior"(I'm specifically focussing on behaviour by people who openly act towards others of a different race, etc. as if they are "inferior"). It is a fact that black people whose behaviour doesn't attract attention generally suffer less of this type of hostility because of "who they are" than I do. I can be with a group of white people and nobody takes any notice of me. There's nothing about my appearance that attracts attention ... but when I start talking everything changes. The 'Institutional prejudice" side of things exists in my medical records. I'm having outpatient treatment. There is a heading: COMORBIDITY ... now a 'Morbidity'is defined as a "disease process". If I had a broken leg, for instance, it wouldn't be a 'Morbidity'.I've tried to point out that it used to be the case that Homosexuals were thought by some to be suffering from some sort of morbidity. Nowadays no one would even think of filling in the COMORBIDITY question with HOMOSEXUALITY ... a primarily behavioural identity. So ...what is my COMORBIDITY? Aspergers Practically every aspect of my communication, gestures ... voice, facial expressions, body postures, etc., etc., is "not normal". Is Asperger's a "disease process"? What do you think. Black people very seldom "get on my case". If I was black I'd probably have far fewer problems... even from white people. I'm now 77 ... and still alarmingly fit ... very quick-minded ... can recite Pi from memory to 200 decimal laces... but still (mainly white) people "target me". One thing I've noticed about white people ...a lot of them have become ... when one looks into their minds ...at what is going on in their heads ...crazy in a laughably stupid way.

Systemic racism is like if everyone had an app on their phone that took 2 cents from your bank account every time they saw you. You end up broke at the end of the day, but you'd be hard pressed to convince any individual that they contributed. Every time you try to get someone to uninstall the app, they just get defensive and tell you to stop accusing them of stealing.

Contra-Cocaine Trafficking leading to the US Crack Cocaine epidemic leading to destroyed communities leading to the war on drugs and privatized prisons. Led to a significant increase in single-parent households, extreme poverty, drug addiction, gang violence, and more. This was only the 80s-90s. These things have generation-long effects. This is only one form. You have redlining effects, federal housing effects, widespread implicit biases (affects police brutality, jobs, education, civil unrest, etc.). Some of these things we've abolished and some are still in effect. These actions are still affecting minorities to this day. Prior to Immigrants coming to the UK in any numbers it was the custom of police in many parts of the country to "teach a lesson" to individuals (and occasionally to more than one person at a time) by, usually in a cell environment, "getting physical" with them .. so they ended up with "bruises". The logic being that this caused some of them to "think twice" about continuing their criminal behaviour. Such tactics are nowadays no longer viable … but they did work back in the past … sometimes. Some police still feel inclined to "step outside the law" when confronted with someone they see as "challenging them" … with people who they think are "guilty" of being a criminal. Right up to the late 90s (as institutional violence against non-white people approved of by senior police) it was true that there were "not a few" police, sometimes operating as a group, who were blatantly hostile to non-white, especially black people. In 1999 a black female friend of mine was mistaken for a male by four policemen and got seriously beaten up. They then "fitted her up" and she got fined £800 … for "assaulting the police" (she appealed and won her appeal … but she was left with psychological, possibly neurological damage … from which she has not recovered). In a later incident a few months later she was thrown to the ground, handcuffed, taken to a police station … then sectioned by a social worker and sent to a psychiatric ward … where they, before the day was out, cancelled her section and sent her home … she was told to "keep her mouth shut". Her crime was that she could easily be mistaken for "being a male". As an aside she also had the "problem" that she had a 19th century white ancestor (she is Nigerian-born) and, although she is very dark-skinned, has a "Scottish head" … her head shape is identical to that of Scottish people (men) from certain parts of Scotland. If she was white, people would initially think she was a Scotsman. (She is not a lesbian … she just has a masculine appearance). Her ancestor traded with Nigeria and married into her family … who were "of status" in their country (Nigeria didn't exist as a country or colony back then).

I am a black skinned Indian Malaysian. Of course, black skinned humans were abused for a few hundred years. But for me if a non-black skinned person state clearly, he or she is not racist, I will not at all hold his/her present race against him. There were conflicts throughout history where one kingdom subjugates another and the subjugated people were treated badly. I am sure some of my ancestors somewhere in history were the subjugators. But the moment I find even a slight racism in a person, I will refuse to have any interaction with that person. Currently as an engineer I still cannot get myself to purchase a thing from the UK knowing that a survey for UK people showed that most people in the UK still love to have colonies. I will definitely purchase a USA part because I studied there and have not experienced one instance of racism there.

my first answer would be.. ya know 'Not laying down acts of racism against others, while accusing them of things that just can never be proven even exist or even that the people you accuse are even apart of it if it does exist.' Though, on the back of a murdered black person.. 2 dozen more have died under the name of BLM protests & riots, absurd amounts of money have been lost by private small businesses and countless businesses destroyed after already being strained by a pandemic restriction set of rules. The problem is that officers are people, and personal bias against one group of people (literal self made group & not color based) isn't racism, nor is personal bias against one person, but it is given the racist name w/o any context of a officers illegal action or reasonings or past dealings with the person that he abused. -- saying the cop was wrong & murdered someone, but because of their personal history with said person and not because said person was black & the cop white. The cop was wrong to murder that black man, but flat out... BLM is wrong for protests & riots that not only have ended in the deaths of nearly 2 dozen people, but left widows morning, communities shattered, people homeless, & opened up the door for gangs to take advantage of the additional strain on police and do things without restraint. Yep, good. we can defund the police.. and suddenly without a police force let criminals run rampent, so the poor & middle class get revenged.. as the rich will always have security companies at their payroll.

If African Americans as a group, had the same behavioral profile as Asian Americans (on average, performing the best academically, having the highest income, committing the lowest crime, etc.), would we still be proclaiming ‘systematic racism’ exists? Quite the opposite, Black privilege is real: Besides affirm. action, special scholarships and other set asides, being shielded from legitimate criticism is a privilege. As a group, they’re missing out on much needed feedback.

Any self accountability at all? Come on now. Maybe we have to understand behavior. Blaming anyone or everyone else for decisions one makes is the root of whats wrong. How to make it better? Come on now stop pandering and telling people they are dumb and cant make it on their own. thats really empowering. How can some make it and not others? Accountability and responsibility would be very helpful yet some just choose to look the other way.

I can't believe the dribbled that is allowed as a TED talk. In now way was anything proven in this video, they just threw around allegations at face value and expected you to just take their word for it.

I am sorry but Dr. Bernice King was really, really poor. Brought very little to the discussion. Only seemed to communicate in slow kind of double speak that when though about actually didn't mean much. This not to take away from the overall fantastic discussion by the rest of the panel.
