when i got to the mountains in my first playthrough and the strings picked up, i felt as if i was playing journey again for the first time. i got immediate chills and a strange sense of nostalgia and had to take a moment to just take in the environment. the pathless was a fantastic experience, and while im late to the party im glad im here now. thank you for another (to me) unforgettable score to another unforgettable gaming experience

The Pathless was a shot in the dark for me. I bought it knowing almost nothing about the game, and was stunned at how memorable the experience wound up being for me. This soundtrack is a huge reason why. I've been coming back here very often for months now, especially as background music while working. Absolutely beautiful work, it makes me all the more excited to replay the game once I've forgotten enough puzzles to properly reexperience it.

The Pathless was visually stunning, but incomplete without the score to support it. You have created something only you could make. I am grateful for not only your own hard work, but that of each person that touched an element of this wonderful album. I wish my own journey as a musician yielded results like these. Thank you for carrying the torch for many of us creatives who wished we could also write music.

I am in love with this work of art! I have some thoughts to share, and I am so pleased that we have a space to do so on your well articulated video. I think any piece of work has not only its length, but also a listener's time to absorb. Of course that will vary from person to person, but it is a widely shared belief on whether the gameplay or the soundtrack has the longer time to absorb. The quality of the music has a mulitplicative effect on absorption time. Case in point, Tom Clancy's The Division Survival Mode DLC I played on repeat for many hours both for the repeatable game style and for legitimately wanting to hear the music for those hours. A match made in heaven. The high quality music that is also dynamic to the player's path in The Pathless is like a double multiplicative or exponential effect on the time to absorb. Unfortunately, I think most players (including myself) have done Act I in one area, done Act II in a second area, and done Act III in the third area. I plan to play through again just for the sake of experimenting with the musical engine. That means in my opinion, the soundtrack is the real selling point of this game. Such a system would be even better applied to a procedural roguelike game where the gameplay's design also lends itself to experimentation in many play-throughs. Despite this point, it is so interesting how most players will have absorbed in my estimation less than one third of musical content in The Pathless. It really shows how the goal and theme to uniquely recognize each player's path was indeed achieved. A separate note: The epic yet understated little cluster chord swell in "Into the Mountains" (1:01:39) is my favorite moment. It really immerses me in my epic & sad mountain adventure. I would have spaced it out even further in time to give it even more gravity. I love how spaced out between silence the musical theme is in the lobby/hangar in Aliens Fireteam Elite.

One of the most memorable moments of the game for me was when I was running across a bridge and the music began picking up into this wonderful crescendo. What I appreciate so much about your scores is how you compose them with adaptive audio in mind. Your wonderful music coinciding with the actions of the game just adds so much to the experience. The temples with the large crystals were other instances, and those were some of my favorite moments of the game largely because of the music. As the puzzle progressed and the gears turned in my head, so too did the music, which in itself coincided with my thoughts. Those wonderful musical moments added so much to the experience for me, and that is always the case when I play a game you’ve composed. One of the largest selling points of the game for me was you, and you did not disappoint in the slightest. So thank you. Thank you for once again delivering something truly special.
@awintory4 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for these! Really means a lot to read this. We work very hard to make sure that the music and the gameplay never stop dancing together. It should feel like the player is basically a co-author of the score, and it's REALLY hard work. It's so gratifying to read how it managed to come together :)

I remember, back when I played Abzu, I had this moment right when you're swimming through the autoswim part of chapter 6, and Ichthyosaurus Communis hits its climax right when you're greeted with the visuals of the entire lost city surrounding you. Something clicked in my brain, and I would go back to that moment time and time again just to experience that feeling of wonder it gave me. I went into The Pathless expecting to have that experience again 1, maybe 2 times. There are at least 6 separate times in this game where I can confidently say I feel just as much, if not more, of a sense of wonder and amazement. Needless to say, this game blew my expectations out of the water. Thanks, Austin. P.S. Hearing the rendition of No Field Was Formed (I think) during the Abzu moment got me super choked up. I love it when games are able to evoke a response like that from me, so again, thanks, Austin.

Hi Austin. Commenting a bit late on this video but I just wanted to say that you are easily one of my favourite composers. I first heard your music in Journey and to this day ‘Apotheosis’ never fails to make me cry when I listen to it. I was so excited to know you were also composing the music for ‘The Pathless’ as you did with ‘ABZU’. Your music is so beautifully filled with a sense of story, wonder, beauty and danger and it wonderfully enhances the experience of these games. It’s truly unique in my opinion. Hopefully you will continue to compose for future ‘Giant Squid’ games. Thank you.

I just recently bought my first real gaming PC, and I've been playing The Pathless on Steam with Nvidia Surround 48:9. Needless to say, the music is stunning. This is probably the most immersive game I've played on my rig so far, with the breathtaking art style as wide as I can see and the incredible soundscape centered around such wondrous and ethereal music. I don't know if it's intentional, but I find myself trying to match my traversal (which is also stupendous) to the music. That's how deeply it's got its claws in me. The Pathless, like Abzu and Journey before it, is something very special, and would be tremendously incomplete without this score. Thank you, Mr. Wintory.

I think this is your most brave soundtrack and it really resonated with me! Have a wonderful 2021 and I can't wait for your next projects!!! PS: Also thank you to Giant Squid for delivering such a beautiful game! Christmas before time! Wintory is in my opinion one of the best composer, at the level of Uematsu or Soule (among others). Journey and Banner Saga osts was the main soundtrack for many D&D games, study hours and some other gaming experiences (outside their own amazing games). I had a one-shot d&d pirate-themed game based almost only on the music of Tooth and Tails and my players said that was their best gaming experience ever. So many great memories... and I can't wait to add this to the list. I'll buy it for SURE.
