It’s hopeful they’ve become immune after 2000 years of misplaced blame. There is no doubt the Pharisees and the Sadducees were frightened by the Jesus movement as they were of John the Baptist before him, because they could never forget for a second the Roman sandal firmly stuffed in the back of their necks. It’s hard to comprehend just how hard they were put down. The first rule of Roman fight Club is there is no G*d but Cesar. As a lifelong New York City resident and as an ethnically Jewish woman (although not religious), I want to thank you for covering Chaim’s case (and, as always, doing so respectfully). I have been following this case for MANY years. I was SO GLAD that you mentioned Chaim’s desperate pleas to come home from summer camp a few months before his murder, and the Rabbi’s very unusual fixation w/calling the Weiss family repeatedly asking when Chaim would be back. Those who hadn’t been following this case may not’ve realized how much of a BOMBSHELL this information is. Not only was this the FIRST time since 1986 that ANY new info has been released about the case, it is also the VERY FIRST time a possible suspect has been mentioned. Before then, only very little was known about the case: 1. That the killer was, most likely, a Jew himself (as only a Jew would’ve known to open a window after Chaim’s death and understood the importance of lighting that candle- as it is part of the Jewish tradition of “sitting sheva”) 2. The killer must’ve had easy access to the Yeshiva without looking out of place there and 3. This was NOT a hate crime. Unfortunately, I think that Chaim was being abused by this Rabbi- that would explain his desperately begging his father to take him home from camp. It is not normal for a Rabbi at a Jewish summer camp or a camp counselor at a secular/non-religious summer camp, to call a boy‘s parents as many times as Rabbi Avram did asking if & when Chaim was coming back. The same strange and inappropriately acting Rabbi was working at the Yeshiva that Chaim attended. Also, Chaim was one of the boys (if not the ONLY boy) at the Yeshiva that had his own room without a roommate. The other kids there would’ve known that.. The suspicious Rabbi may not have, which could explain why he opened the wrong child’s dorm room door at first. In fact, that’s the only child who was awakened by it and was able to tell investigators about it. That does not mean that the Rabbi didn’t open the doors of several other dorm rooms looking for Chaim before finding him. It also explains to me why many of the kids at the Yeshiva were reluctant to talk to the police about those whom they may be suspicious of. It would weigh quite heavy on a child going to school at that Yeshiva to voice any suspicions about one of their religious teachers, a Holy man- a Rabbi- a man they are all taught to trust and respect.

Christine… this is the best, most thorough comment and I agree 💯 %. As I said to another commenters, unless and until we find out what the rabbi ACTUALLY knows this crime will remain unsolved almost 40 years later. I think the other teachers and rabbis at the yeshiva know too. It’s possible other teenagers at the school either KNOW because they were abused too or heard through gossip regardless of how it might go against their religious training. I pray Chaim’s parents live long enough to find who took their precious son out of this world🙁🙁❤️

I think this is the best assessment I’ve read. I miss heard the part when the other boy had his door opened. That really makes things click into place. I also suggested this doesn’t look like antisemitism because what person killing out of a hatred for a people would then go and observe that people’s traditions? How would they even know about those traditions!? A non-practicing Jew or otherwise non-Jewish person would not take the time and care to properly send off the dead.

@cristinesomerville45222 жыл бұрын
@@playnicechannel Just in case people may not know, the Jewish religion is usually broken up into 3 forms of practice- there’s: 1. Reform Judaism- which is where I would consider myself to fit in- where you are Jewish but not necessarily very religious or observant- again, being Jewish is an ETHNICITY as well as a religion which differentiates it from many other religions, 2. Orthodox Judaism- which means you are religious and observant and go to synagogue every Friday night and Saturday morning to celebrate Shabbat, and 3. Hasidic Judaism- which is EXTREMELY religious, your entire life revolves around observing the Jewish religion to a T, you are only sent to Jewish schools and Yeshivas and are not allowed to have a secular education- this is the most extreme way to practice Judaism. Chaim and his family were most likely Hasidic Jews as he was being educated at a Yeshiva and not a secular school. When a religious Jew observes Shabbat they are not allowed to do any “work” for the 24hours that make up the day of the Shabbas. The religious Jewish definition of “work” means ANYTHING that exerts effort even small things such as pressing buttons in an elevator (many hospitals have Shabbat elevators that will stop on every floor on Saturdays to accommodate Jewish patients) and the lighting of candles would also be considered “work” and would not be done on a Saturday. However it is absolute Jewish tradition to light candles on the Friday evening BEFORE Shabbat- just to be clear. I believe the candle the Yeshiva lit in Chaim’s room was lit on that Sunday- the very next day after Chaim’s murder was discovered. No Hasidic Jew would light a candle on a Saturday (Shabbat)- not even when it is the first day of “sitting sheva.” And again, “sitting sheva” is the very important tradition of how Jews show love and respect to those who have died. We know the first candle was lit by the Yeshiva staff, the SECOND candle mysteriously showed up. Now, the 2nd candle HAD to have been lit and placed there by someone else in the Yeshiva- whether it was put there by the murderer or by a school friend of Chaim’s is unknown. However, his room was locked and closed off by the police to preserve the crime scene so after the Yeshiva asked the police to allow them to place the first candle there NO ONE else was supposed to go into Chaim’s room and everyone at the Yeshiva would’ve known this. So it is very mysterious indeed…

While I don't like to speculate on murder motives, an often overlooked factor in this case is how a lot of murders and suicides in orthodox religious circles stem from taboo. I know someone who knows an orthodox Jewish guy who says that, as a 16 year old boy, he was attacked by the older brother of a male schoolmate he had a secret relationship with. And the more orthodox an environment is, the more taboos exist. There are countless reasons for someone to want to get rid of someone in circles such as these. In a school setting, my mind instantly goes to abuse, and clearly I'm not the only one. And believe me when I say there is ALWAYS a cover-up going on in situations like this.

And if my fourteen year old son had a teacher sooo impatient for his return, meeting him on his arrival back home, he wouldn't be talking to my son alone, and if somehow it happened, I'd be making sure that my now upset son told me why. His parents didn't even question him? Or the Rabbi during those phone calls? It strikes me as very strange, given the basically stalker behaviour. Even if respect for rabbis forbade them questioning him, wouldn't they question their son as they comforted him? I don't think there's much doubt about the motive. He was aging out of attractiveness to whoever was abusing him. Unless the Polish cleaner was mentally ill, that's really the only explanation. Oh gosh, I just had a horrible realization about why Chaim might have had his own dorm room. Being in a single could’ve isolated him from his peers while allowing for easier and more covert access to his room at all hours of the day. It also could’ve been some sort of sick “reward” for his silence as a way to show him he’s special and that he’d always be taken care of in exchange for his silence about any abuse. I definitely think this horrendous crime was committed by someone at the school, either a student or a faculty member, though I personally feel it was the rabbi due to the adherence to orthodox traditions like opening the window and moving Chaim’s body off of the bed. The lack of witnesses makes me think the crime was committed by an authority figure whose power would’ve prevented the other boys from coming forward out of fear of retaliation by the administration. I also wonder if the school tried to gaslight the students into staying silent by weaponizing their religious beliefs about refraining from gossip and how speculation without proof is a sin by making the boys start to doubt their own recollections and valid concerns, resulting in them feel guilty for ever having had any concerns. That’s why I personally believe the second candle that had been lit after the crime scene had been sealed was done so by another student out of a sense of guilt at not coming forward with any suspicions they might’ve had. It also makes the most sense logistically since students had the easiest access to the dorm room and seeing another student nearby wouldn’t have aroused nearly as much suspicion as a faculty member would have. The school’s willingness to believe that the non-Jewish janitor committed the crime feels suspicious to me as it’s like they were so desperate for the crime to have been committed by an “outsider” that they were eager to scapegoat the janitor to further distance any higher ups at the school from the crime. I also wonder if the lack of witnesses could’ve been a result of Chaim not feeling well that night as he could’ve been weakened from any medications or sickness and wasn’t able to put up as much of a fight, which also makes me believe that this was someone who knew him and knew that he had not been up to feeling like himself.

I wonder if that easter card had anything to do with it or if it was some unrelated random weirdo. One unpleasant but not improbable theory is that he got too old to be interesting to whichever rabbi or other staff member who was abusing him, and he threatened to talk, and so he was disposed of. The fact the whole school is refusing to talk about it makes me wonder what they're hiding.
@Sara88890 Жыл бұрын
A pedophile who likes boys is called a "Chickenhawk" maybe the letter is hinting at Chaim outliving his "usefulness" to his abuser (he is too old for the abuser's tastes, so he kills him to keep him quiet). Easter fits with the egg/chicken theme and might have been used to make the parents/law enforcement thing the killer is Christian rather than Jewish and possibly from the Yeshiva.

Honestly, I think it had to be someone at the school. I feel like more people would’ve heard/seen something if it was an intruder. Not only that, but his body was arranged according to Orthodox Jewish tradition. I find it hard to believe that an outsider would’ve known those nuances. If it was the Rabbi, it makes sense why no one has come forward. From outward appearances, the community has a tendency to be secretive and not gossip. They would probably be even less likely to gossip about a Rabbi, someone who’s held in high regard. Very strange case overall.

Since genetic genealogy is more and more prevalent in resolving cold cases, I rather wonder why police still refrain from testing that hair that was recovered from Chaim’s room. @nobodysbuisness1112 жыл бұрын
They are likely hoping that methods to extract DNA from samples (hair) become better. Current methods to get the DNA information destroy the original sample, if one piece of hair is their only piece of forensic evidence it would be terrible for it to be destroyed while the DNA extraction may fail. The genetic genealogy part is ready so hopefully the DNA extraction will improve quickly as well.

@Catherine Reed I agree. It may be that with children, the actual terms seem too raw to use. However, I was raped as a toddler, bound and gagged. I always say “raped” and never “sexually abused” or any other watered down nomenclature. Instead (and for me it is a statement of my healing and the hard won distance for which I have worked diligently) I say “I was raped and sodomized systematically when I was three years old.” Though people are aghast and show incredible empathy, I do thank them and suggest I could not speak of it openly and plainly had I not come to terms with its reality and did I not feel a sense of wholeness-even triumphant-with the mental and emotional stability I have earned through my persistent energy and efforts and the assistance of wonderful professionals and ardent allies. It is almost certainly committed by someone from the school. Rabbi Cooper's peculiar behaviour concerning Chiam is deeply suspicious. I believe that no one will speak out because there is very likely to be a feeling of "guilt by association" because not speaking up when the opportunity was available even if they had information about the murder may be construed as an "accessory after the fact". Bear in mind how strict and regimental the orthodox jews are about behaviour and gossip.

I hate to be the one to bring this up, but in these religious institutions, it isn't uncommon for children to be sexually violated by the staff. It also isn't uncommon for children to sustain sexual relationships with religious institution staff members due to threats by the perpetrator. The religious staff members sexually violate the child, threaten to hurt them or any loved ones if the child reveals the abuse, and so much more. It's terrible, but it really does happen a lot, unfortunately. It was probably one of the staff members that was sexually violating him and murdered him to not risk him revealing the abuse. It's definitely an inside job. It's someone that knew the situation very well, knew that the boy would be alone, knew that no one else would notice, etc. I wouldn't be surprised if it was the "Rabbi" himself. These institutions are not safe. The dad should've listened to the boy's plea to come home. These scenarios need to be thought about. The boy was upset for a reason. Someone was bothering him and it was someone he couldn't fend off for one reason or another, an authoritative figure at the place. May he rest in peace.

That Easter card is chilling. If it was sent by Chaim’s killer or someone who knows something about why Chaim was murdered it sounds like Chaim had ‘outlived’ his usefulness to someone, like an abuser, and they got rid of him before he could out them. If someone sent it to the Weiss family as a prank there’s a special place in Hell for them for taunting a grieving family like that and providing a false lead.
@Ydce1891 Жыл бұрын
It could also be a prank. There are sick people out there and it’s not uncommon for people to prank families of victims. I wonder if the card could be from an antisemite because we do have so many on Long Island. It’s very odd, I personally think it was someone with intimate knowledge of the case. They used the card to taunt his family or it was something symbolic that points to sexual abuse. It’s such a sick world we are in. Why are so many priests, rabbis and other religious leaders abusing children?

All orthodox religions have very strict laws. I assume the murderer was a faculty member and most likely that weird ass rabbi. The separation of church and state doesn’t apply so much to individual cases and by now the separation of church and state doesnt exist because of Christianity taking over the country despite the country being built on religious freedom. It’s a weird situation, on one hand this a very devout school so the students and staff feel a need to stick to traditions and customs. On the other hand, if this was premeditated by the rabbi mentioned or another staff member could they have picked that exact date so they could use Shabbat as an excuse to delay the police’s efforts. My question is, why wasn’t there a cop on guard for the victims room until Shabbat was over? Why would they leave the room accessible when anyone could destroy evidence. If someone can murder a child in secrecy they can absolutely destroy evidence. Especially if other staff are protecting them.

While some religious beliefs are understandable to a point, I can't think of a rule much more harmful than the equivalent of withholding evidence. I just don't understand that at all. Considering the locks on the dorm buildings and the fact that only two boys had their own room, it seems likely that the perpetrator was someone within, like a staff member or the janitor.
