Biff's grandma is voiced by Biff's actor, Thomas F. Wilson. This film most of the original cast play multiple roles, Fox plays himself in 3 different timelines as well as his son AND daughter, Lea Thompson of course reprises her role as Lorraine in the different timelines. Absent however are Crispin Glover and Claudia Wells, Wells quit acting for a bit when her mother got cancer so she was replaced by Elizabeth Shue of then Karate Kid Fame, Jeffrey Weissman replaced Glover as George because of a pay dispute, the use of Glover's likeness actually led to a huge lawsuit. In addition, a young Elijah Wood is in the film, and Needles is portrayed by Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers They did film 2 and 3 at the same time yes.

This movie never fails to amaze me. Since they had no plans on making a sequel, they had to rebuild ALL of those 1955 sets with exacting detail. People in the same places, etc. Timing. And then film the 2nd movie AROUND the 1st movie. It's god damn brilliant. And it makes for one of the most fun time travel films ever. The interplay of 3 completely different time periods is perfectly handled. The call backs and self-references to the first one are genius. Also, the future dinner... Michael J Fox is playing old his old self. His old self's father. His son. AND he is also his daughter. They had to set up a motion control rig and film each of his 4 roles individually and then composite them. Which meant every single prop had to be in the exact same spot for every single take. That is insanity. Especially for the 80s.

On Oct. 21st 2015, I timed it so that the moment they traveled to the future in this film it would be that exact time in real life. It was kind of surreal. I love the whole trilogy, but the second is by far my favorite. Also, the filmmakers weren't trying to predict the future. They just created a future they'd WANT to see. They figured there wouldn't be flying cars and such.

Right. In time travel movies where future events drastically changes as it did in this one, any depiction of the future can be taken with a grain of salt. Yes, the theatrical version of BTTF 2 also showed previews of BTTF 3. It gave away too much in those scenes, diluting the novelty of the 3rd movie greatly. I'm glad that you added this one to your list. The attention to detail in keeping all the scenes consistent with the first movie and the time hopping is fantastic. Biff Tannen is arguably one of the best villains of 80's cinema. (I actually knew bullies who were as bad as his character.) The actor did a great job of playing stupid very convincingly, though you can tell by 2015 Biff's interaction with 1955 Biff that 2015 has gotten a bit smarter (calling himself out on his misuse of metaphors), so I think it would be plausible that 2015 Biff could have stolen the time machine and did exactly what Marty was planning on doing, by using the almanac when he was young to make money. In my book, this movie is the best of the trilogy.

You mentioned the similarities to End Game and I just wanted to make sure you remember that they actually referenced these movies in End Game. It can be fun to see where other movies drew inspiration from. To answer your question though, I think growing up I liked the second one best for a while but now that I've grown up more I like the first one because it's just so classic. I loved seeing the future and all of the cool stuff when I was younger but now we are living in those days. Certainly wish we had some more of that stuff although they did get some things right.

Yes, when I first watched the trilogy 2 years ago (summer 2020 at age 28), I thought the first film was absolutely delightful, but it was THIS film that got me super hooked and desperately NEEDING to see Part III - ASAP. Not only because of that epic cliffhanger, but all of the time-hopping around, the crazy Dictator Biff universe, returning to 1955 Dance Night with TWO Calvin Kleins, the race to retrieve the Sports Almanac, it was so insane I was on the edge of my seat the entire time! However, even though I still adore the entire trilogy and truly do love them all, rewatching a few years later, the first one is simply the gold standard. "Is this a preview for what we're going to see in the third one? I don't want to see anything!" I agree that the first one was a better movie. The second, I think, suffered because they had written themselves into a corner with the jokey ending of the first one. They had never intended to make more and ended the first with them flying into the future as a joke. When it came to writing the second one they had to cover where _that_ story thread was going, but it wasn't enough for a full movie, so it ends up feeling like first quarter of the movie is just a set-up for the second quarter which is just a set-up for the last half. It's still a good movie, it's just not as strong as the first and, in my opinion, third movies of the series.

The not meeting their future selves is actually a plot hole. If you travel to the future, you remove yourself from the present and so you cannot exist in the future unless you go to the future but then you come back in time. So if you meet your future self, he will already know that you're coming from the past because that's what he did.
@Karamarika
@Karamarika 3 ай бұрын
That's a hole in just about all time travel movies. If anyone was going to come back from the future to change the past, they would have already done it. That would make it so we only knew the changed version, which would then negate the need for the future person to ever come back to change it. Yet another problem that shows that time travel just isn't possible.

So the fact that that future and the actual 2015 don’t line up isn’t a surprise since they weren’t even trying. But there’s still some things from that future that I think would be neat. I always wondered if the Biff in this one is inspired in a way physically and a few other trates like casino,womaniser etc was inspired by Donald Trump in the 80s cause around this time Donald Trump cameos n so many tv programmes, he was just everywhere back then. Its who he really reminds me of in this one even when it first came out i thought it. It may just be me but i wondered if anyone else can see it.

It's important to note that all things about the 2015 future were meant to be a joke. They did it so over the top that everyone realized we are not supposed to think it's any prediction at all and that it's important in other ways. In that sense it's dated, as almost no one who sees this film nowadays realizes it and the film gives really different vibe because of it. I mean the personality traits of the youth and things looking much more artificial, minority report like as you stated, those were important aspects for sure. Youth becoming much more violent, Biff is hardened criminal running essentially a gang, and other aspects like this were on point. But for the most part it was just made so over the top that the future aspects wouldn't be taken seriously.

Trivia: The original BTTF was never intended to have a sequel. Bob Gale and Robert Zemeckis conceived of it as a stand alone film. The ending was only intended to be the last 'gag' of the film. It wasn't until the critical and fan reception was so positive and for several years demanding a sequel that they wrote one. This explains the gap between the release of the first two films (part II was released 4 years after the original). Zemeckis has said that if he had known they were going to do a sequel from the beginning, he never would have had Jennifer get into the DeLorean with Doc and Marty. This explains why they came up with this recurring theme where Jennifer is required to be unconscious for most of the film (Doc using the sleep inducer on her first, then her fainting later on). Her character is not essential to the story so they had to find convenient excuses to get her "out of the way" of the story. They also had to reshoot the entire end sequence from the first film since Elizabeth Shue replaced Claudia Wells as "Jennifer". However, reshooting also allowed them to include a scene where Biff (1985) sees the DeLorean (which was not in the original cut), setting him up to be the villain again in the next film. The reshoot was so well done that most people reacting to the film today don't notice. But if you watch them back to back, you can clearly see the differences. Besides the obvious new actress playing Jennifer, Michael J. Fox had visibly aged in those 4 years. And while he was arguably young enough to pass for a high school teenager in the first film, in this one he's pushing 30 and clearly not a teenager. Christopher Lloyd delivers some all his lines differently (making Doc a little funnier, but also sounding a bit less natural in my opinion).

When I was a kid, Part 2 was my favorite. As an adult, Part 1 is my favorite. But I love all 3! Can't wait for you to experience Part 3 - it's a fantastic ending to the trilogy that calms down a little, takes its time, and is more heartfelt than the first two. Also yes, originally in theaters in 1989, Part 2 ended with clips of Part 3, exactly as you saw here. If it didn't it might've confused audiences since no movie had ever done that before - plus, audiences had to wait a full year to watch Part 3!

Concerning the producer credit for Kennedy, there's an old industry saying: The only thing required to have a producer credit is someone willing to give you one. The level of involvement for producers varies wildly from project to project and person to person. Not making any claims against her here, but Executive Producer doesn't necessarily mean as much as people think it does.
@JiReyAnimation

"Not making any claims against her here" you say as you explain something only useful for people who want to discredit someone.
@StCerberusEngel

@@JiReyAnimation You seem to disregard my use of the qualifying term "necessarily." Not discrediting anyone. Explaining something that puts into perspective the potential involvement of parties in a project. She could have a lot to do with something, or very little. It depends on each project, so her credit might appear in great projects that she helped make great, or great projects that she didn't have much to do with. It could also appear in crap that she did or didn't get involved with much. It's a gamut. So if she gets crap for one project, that doesn't mitigate her involvement in others, whatever it might have been. And if facts can discredit someone, then maybe that someone didn't deserve such credit. Might watch the behind-the-scenes info on this trilogy again and post any info on what she did for the project if I can find it. Most of the top online search results just say she "produced" and "collaborated" without detail so... Or you could take it from here if you like.
@StCerberusEngel
@StCerberusEngel 2 жыл бұрын
@@JiReyAnimation And just to update really quickly, I found one article detailing that her role on most sets seemed to largely be handling talent and doing a lot of organizing, as well as advising Spielberg on his scripts to one degree or another. So her involvement wasn't minimal. This doesn't mean a producer will always be this involved, however, and that was the point. The more you know.
@JiReyAnimation
@JiReyAnimation 2 жыл бұрын
@@StCerberusEngel that's good to know, but my point was that the circumstances in which you choose to bring up said facts were not really the best. He's already giving her credit for working as a producer on a successful franchise. There's no need for "Well actually we don't really know how much producing she did." Because that just makes you look like you're trying to belittle whatever contribution, big or small, she did. It doesn't matter how much or how little she did, what matters is that she did, because films are a team effort and every role, big or small counts. And a lot of people ignore that, and choose to discredit people for the good stuff they make just because they worked on something they don't like.
@StCerberusEngel
@StCerberusEngel 2 жыл бұрын
@@JiReyAnimation He also brought up the fact that she got a lot of crap for a lot of the decisions she currently makes. So acknowledging that producers don't always play the same role on every project, especially when their position at the company shifts, as hers has, might help to explain a fluctuation in quality of the work observed. Also, how big a role someone plays can make a huge difference. Because the wrong people in the wrong positions can be disastrous if they have too much influence over the outcome. A few small problems can either be glossed over, or they can be a frozen O-ring aboard a space shuttle. Yeah, everything's a team effort, but if someone spills coffee in the breakroom, that probably won't cause a fire on stage that halts production. And I directly stated I wasn't decrying her work on these projects. My opinion of Kennedy makes no difference here. If you must know, I don't much care for her personally, but it seems she did a good job of keeping things running behind the scenes when she worked for these directors. Apparently she can't take notes for shit, according to Spielberg, but there's an example of the wrong person doing the wrong job.

About the 2015 future that's presented: remember that Biff created an alternate timeline, by changing his past. What Marty did in the first one was precisely that. So the 2015 we see is not ours, is the 2015 that Marty created in the new alternate timeline. A 2015 in which the cars fly and the all thing we see in there, that is not in our actual timeline, takes place haha. Awesome reaction, can't wait to see the 3rd one!!!

You wondered if the trailer for Part III was shown in theaters. It was. When the sequel for BTTF was announced; they said that one film would come out in November of 1989 and the other in May of 1990. And on the DVD Commentary, co-Producer Bob Gale said that when Part II was released, Part III had been “in the can” and completed; so they cut a little teaser for Part III on the end of Part II to let the fans know that there was more to come. In terms of is Part I or Part II better; you always go toward which film established the franchise. Sometimes it’s the sequel (The Wrath of Khan, The Empire Strikes Back, T2: Judgment Day), but most of the time it’s that first film that sets the stage for (potentially) other films to follow. Back to The Future..the first film..is one of those films.

In response to thors reaction comments about how Kathleen Kennedy was on the staf of a good movie. Starting at 4 minutes and 8 seconds into the video. Starting with... Just because someone is riding on the waves of great and successful people does not mean thay are the reason for that success. Producers are not directors. Kathleen Kennedy is not great, just fortunate to work with the greats. No need to give her undue credit. Look up how Gorge Lucas took back his company from a producer partner. Its a good story and explains why producers dont make the greatness of the product. Thay help with the funding or assist with the production pipeline. Thay are not the creative force that makes the story great. So stop acting like Kathleen Kennedy being on the staff of back to the future franchise made the franchise great, when it did not. When you do you actually detract from the people that made these films, great.

Biff is basically what happens when kids grow up without a strong male role model in their life. Biff is an orphan and his grandmother was abusive, so he turned out as one would expect growing up in such a hostile environment. While this is no excuse for his behaviour as an adult, it does reveal why he is the way he is.
