Trick I learned from being too cheap to want to buy a barrell trimmer. Mount the blank on the lathe without barrell trimming to rough turn to round, then mount the blank in the pin jaws on the chuck, then use a skew to slowly scrape it down to the brass tube. worked really quite well and saves me a bit of money
@roncalverley8 жыл бұрын
Obviously it works for you. Perhaps I'll try it just for fun sometime. Thanks :)
@howycwap8 жыл бұрын
+Ron Calverley It works pretty well, and if youre ever in a bind where none of your barrell trimmers fit and its a one off kit, then you can always try it.

Pastor Peewee, you could put about $20 - $30 dollars on a pen like that, that's what I put on the pens I make. Not much more though. I don't know about in the US but here in Australia, people don't see the value in anything hand made unless it glitters. So you'd have trouble moving them if they were more expensive. If you were to hand make a case for it then maybe and extra $20 or $30 dollars could be added. Ron nice pen my friend. Some handy hints in the video also which by the way are priceless! Sorry about your wife's condition. I understand how awful that disease is. I hope she is not suffering too much.
@roncalverley5 жыл бұрын
I'm still not interested in getting into selling, but thanks for thinking that my pens are worth the effort. As for my Wife Mary, she passed away back in February. Yes, Alzheimer Disease is a terrible thing that's for sure.

You mentioned coats of wax that you applied on the pen. I have never waxed any of the pens I have made, but it may be a good idea to put a coat on top of the actual finish. I use Birchwood Casey Tru-Oil gunstock finish. It is a linseed oil product that penetrates the wood and provides protection against almost anything that can harm the wood. Think of a hunter that is out in the woods, and it starts to rain. That's the kind of protection I like on my pens.
@roncalverley6 жыл бұрын
That stuff sounds interesting. Might just try it sometime. The last time that I refinished one of my old gunstock has to be about 40 years ago. Just use polyurethane. It looked okay, but from what I can recall now, it didn't have that deep hand rubbed luster to it. Thanks for that tip :)

This is exactly the video I wanted to see, thank you. I’m a newbie and I don’t think I'd be confident to go so close to my table saw blade, so I guess I would be hand sawing or making a jig. Your pen and working methods are equally beautiful to see and I am in awe of your skills. I think the finite care you take is wonderful. I have the world’s smallest workshop, 6’x6’ so I was looking for a small lathe. There’s cover outside my doors so I work outside, which is good as I have a severe respiratory condition. But it’s bad I live in England, I think rain might be our most infamous weather. Please can I ask you opinion of smaller lathes. I was my mother's carer who had Lewy Body dementia and my grandmother and aunt had Alzheimer’s, I know how hard it can be and my thoughts and prayers are with you. A superb video with perfect narration which explained exactly what you were doing.

It's a brilliant idea to plug a tube by carrot! Awesome! By the way, potato may be use the same...
@roncalverley6 жыл бұрын
When I started using CA glue I stopped the carrot thing because the moisture in the carrot was causing the CA to start curing faster.
@LE-69206 жыл бұрын
But CA glue is more brittle than epoxy, isn't it? If pen will drop, it may cause cracks somewhere. Is there no such danger?
@roncalverley6 жыл бұрын
Yes, I've noticed that CA is brittle and tends to crack when used as a finish when polishing.

i realize some parts were from a kit … only the decorative wood was from your stock. two large sections, being from the kit, are totally black plastic. how difficult would it be making those two black sections into the same wood material? btw, ron … thanks for sharing the video and your experience.

Now that's an interesting idea. I'll take a look at that kit. It's known as a "Sierra" pen kit ( www.penblanks.ca/Sierra-pen-and-pencil-kits/ ). Perhaps the black plastic parts are removable. Thank you for commenting and also for your idea :)
