I found it interesting when you mentioned Lefty from Donnie Brasco in relation to Farrells Penguin. They are in a sense the same person as far as thier roles within the mob but with the Penguin you see a far more ambitious soldier looking to make his way up and in contrast to Lefty who just didn't have the balls to impove on his lot.They are both minor persons within the mob but took different approaches to improve upon thier lot within the organization.

Exactly. I’d be interested if the writers or Farrell himself had any inspiration from that character. While they both want more, Lefty seemed contentiously content with his place in the mob. Whereas Oz absolutely wants more and is completely ruthless in getting it. I have more to say on this comparison in the next episode discussion. Thanks for your thoughts and for watching!

I had little inclination to see a show about the Penguin, but thought I'd take a look after seeing a number of KZbin reviews. Like most of the reviewers, I was surprised at how good it was. There are a number of relatably quirky touches that, rather than seeming conspicuously contrived, actually make the episode more realistic -- e.g., Dolly Parton's audio cameo. The dialogue sounds real and Farrell's performance is exceptionally nuanced. So far, there's no Batman appearance and I hope it stays that way.
