This very rare color film, produced by the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1955, centers around fighting fires aboard several locomotives, and was intended to teach crews about the types of fires they are likely to face. Also included is what equipment is available to flight the blazes and how to specifically fight each type of fire.
This highly collectible train video gives us a chance to see excellent color footage of vintage Pennsylvania Railroad diesel and electric locomotives (some of them on fire!) plus real 1950-'s railroad men at work. Some of the engines shown are GG1's, B-5's, VH-50's, switchers, and a few Pennsy Steamers!

We had an engineroom fire in an ALCO locomotive here in Victoria Australia in 1990. Fortunately it was 3rd unit it was well involved in fire all we could do is uncouple the units and place the ALCO in the cripple siding and call the local fire department. Unfortunately it was DBF it was later hauled to Ballarat Loco depot and scrapped on site the other 2 locos which were Australian built EMD GT-26s were put back on the train and back on the move to Adelaide South Australia

So, they were expected to go into an enclosed, smoke-filled engine room with no breathing apparatus and discharge CO2 in there? That's nuts.

Sure, a man's life is cheaper than a train engine don't you know.😵😠 oh yeah it's "safety first" until it cuts into profits. That's why asbestos is STILL being made and used today.

I imagine it was expected of them. OBA's and Scott packs were unheard-of. Can you picture them telling the HFIC, or supervisor "Well, it was too smokey so we lett it 🔥 ". I'm not taking a side, just looking at it differently. 🤔

I’d assume that there’s got to be decent ventilation inside the engine room with the car body length vents but yeah, it’s a bit strange to use CO2, dry powder would be safer for crew to use and I’m surprised they didn’t equip dry powder in engine rooms, powder works better than gas on typical grease and oil fueled fires anyways

@@loganbaileysfunwithtrains606 Dry powder? That is used for flammable metals. I don't think it would do the turbos or electric motor windings any good either.

@@DanknDerpyGamer No the claim was for a certain music track. Though the claim should be invalid due to the age of the music which very likely lost it's license. Here's what they said: Fireman: engine room's full of smoke. Engineer: you going back there to spray smothering CO2? Fireman: hell no! Pensy don't pay enough for me to kill myself. Engineer: smart man. Let's get the hell out of here.

We have an electrical room at work it’s built from a 40ft shipping container so it’s rather solid and airtight, we have a CO2 system inside and management is like “if you are in there and the alarm goes off you better be out the door before the first cycle of the siren because you’ll be trapped and suffocated” needless to say I don’t spend much time in there
