I spent so much of my childhood in Malta and mainly Gozo where my grandparents bought a house in 1982. I used to go over 3-4 times a year for 2-4 weeks at a time, it holds amazing memories for me. Living in Sannat, swimming down Xlendi, visiting T'Pinu (sorry if my spelling is poor on these names), catching little lizards, going to the Blue Lagoon on Comino on boat trips...was a great place in the 80's and mid 90's, last time I went was when I was 18 in 1997. The Maltese people are justly proud of their *Arab* heritage, *Arab* roots, *Arab* traditions, *Arab* ways, *Arab* culture, *Arab* blood and their *Arab* language despite the input or pollution of Italian vocabulary. Most Maltese regard their country as just a Christian, Europeanised and whiter part of Tunisia. Many Arabs. Particularly those from the Maghrib see Malta as a 'stolen' child, once at its mother's bosom but tragically 'stolen' from her Arab Mother and brought up by Italian foster mother. But as far as we Arabs are concerned Malta our dearest sweetest child but she's grow up to be a nice sweet lady! Mother and Child reunion? most would like to see Malta and Tunisia merge into one country and be called either Maltisia or Tumalta

Very interesting and unusual language. Shame it cannot be learned by outsiders. Also big shame that traditional crafts are disappearing when these old people die. When a nation cannot continue traditional crafts of its predecessors - it looses a significant part of its identity, becoming rather faceless hollow shapes.

It can definitely be learnt, in fact, I’m currently learning it at the moment. Many Arabs. Particularly those from the Maghrib see Malta as a 'stolen' child, once at its mother's bosom but sadly and tragically 'stolen' from her Arab Mother and brought up by Italian foster mother. But as far as we Arabs are concerned Malta our dearest sweetest child but she's grown up to be a nice sweet lady! And would it ever be possible to see Mother and Child reunited? Would we like to see Malta and Tunisia merge into one country and be called either Maltisia or Tumalta!
@warriorstewko6781

Sancho O'Dell Although Malta definitely shares more cultural and linguistic ties to Tunisia, the blood that runs through their veins is undoubtedly much closer to Sicilians and others South Italians. Malta was originally Latin before any Arab or Maghrebi influence. This is made evident as genetic studies show that Maltese genetically share extreme similarities in their genome and in some cases the same exact genetic make up as Sicilians and other South Italians. The Islamic foothold in Malta may have influenced the culture and the Maltese language (which actually originated in Sicily in the form of Siculo-Arabic) but the blood that is in their veins will always be Hellenic or Latin, not Arab. So labelling Malta as being "stolen" from Tunisia is wrong and in fact Malta was stolen by the Islam and the Arabs and remained "stolen" for many centuries. So, despite the culture remaining the blood that runs through there veins (Latin) still reflects the people of Malta and how they were "Arabised" and not "Europeanised".

WarriorStewKo it’s quite complicated because even Tunisians themselves are actually “Arabized” berbers (Amazigh). Research on Tunisian DNA shows that they are about 88% North African and only 4% Arab. Tunisia wasn’t originally an Arab or Muslim country until the Arabs came along and brought their religion with them. A lot of Tunisians today believe they are Arab but the truth is that years of colonization has stripped them of their real culture and roots. So perhaps we are more alike than you might think! 😊

This sums up Malta nicely. Yes it MOST certainly is *AN EUROPEAN ARABIA* And yes they are also most certainly *ARABS*! And they are very clearly proud of their *Arab* routes, *Arab* origins, *Arab* heritage and *Arab* traditions AND of course their *Arab* derived language! This is the most obvious marker of their affiliated *Arab* routes. The *Maltese language is essentially a (Tunisian dialect) Arabic based language with significant input (or Pollution) from Italian (Sicilian dialect) words* I've always regarded Malta as just another part of Tunisia but a rather more *CIVILISED, WHITER, CHRISTIANISED and EUROPEANISED* part that is. The Arab world may be missing one more member!

ultra Man Bruh, Maghrebis have also phoenicians roots, especially Tunisians, what are you talking about ? + phoenicians aren’t Arabs just because they are Middle Easterns, real Arabs live in the peninsula. That’s why malteses aren’t «Arabs» like i said in my previous com, they have north african dna (like most of north africans have maltese or italian dna with their phoenicians roots lol) and their middle eastern part comes mostly from phoenicians and turkish people and not real Arabs.

Most of us that are over say 35, yes, cause we grew up watching italian TV . We did not have much of anything locally ( forget internet or cable TV ) , so we had to watch Italian TV. Si tanti di noi l'Italiano lo conosciamo molto bene . I ragazzini , purtroppo no . La lingua e Semitica in origine con molta influenza Italiana , Francese e anche un pou d'Inglese . Abbiamo molte parole identiche a quelle parlate in Sicilia. La lingua era molto influenzata dal arabo sicolo.
