I've been happily watching your scientific videos on hardware for SC for a few years now, and appreciate them mightily. Making low to md-range setups well below $1k that are playable in SC is a niche I've been in & will continue to be in a for a couple years more, and the fact that your content includes and supports this sort of mindset is awesome-thank you for continuing to do this! My rig is a a Ryzen 5600 and a 1070. I play at 1080p just fine on a 4K tv fuzzy from non native resolution and am wanting to play at 1440p upscaled to 4k. Am I correct to assume that if I'm on a budget, wanting to stay with Nvidia & having a 650w power supply, that a used 3060ti is going to be the best bang for the buck until Nvidia comes out with a better 1440p card with 12-16GB?

switched laptops a month ago, previous was MSI GE73 i7 8750h GTX1060, 32 GB of ram to MSI Alpha 17CV, 7945HX gtx 4060, and put 64 GB of really quick ram in it, running the AI mode for performance in the MSI center, I dont see the frames drop below 54 anywhere, and it usually picks up after a while in those places or if I visit the place again the frames are higher, and most of the time they run at 67-98 on the stations and 60-78 on on the surface space ports, in space I get around 90-124, as on my previous laptop I have removed all the junk that can be removed safely and trimmed back on cycle stealing services without compromising the system, it doesnt appear to get anywhere near as hot so not needed to tinker with tools like throttlestop to keep the temps down like on the old one, the machine is a monster for the price.

Turn off half your threads, you're bottlenecking yourself by having too many. 8 cores/8 Threads runs best regardless of how many you have. Before even watching cus ads... my guess is 3060 12GB And now ive watched it... but i would still say 3060 12GB the price for the 4060 is abysmal its way to high for what it is But yes thats only if the person is comfortable getting a used card otherwise with the 3060 12GB's price not having dropped then a 4060 is an OK option but I would still rather the 6700xt
@tenpoundfortytwo Жыл бұрын
Yeah its interesting, I managed to pick up the 3060 for £222 and the 4060 for £263 in the black friday sales (both new), so at those prices I'd probably say the 4060 is at least £40 better. But like you say, I think the 6700XT would still be the one to go for, especially second hand!
@ImreBertalan86 Жыл бұрын
I know this is not the place, but I have to mention I'm still boycotting NVidia because of what Jensen said and because of their predatory pricing. And as we could see it, 6700XT looks to be the better choice either way. A tad more expensive tho... A 5700 vs 6700 vs 7700 matchup could also be interesing. (If somebody does not know: he said to a reported, who asked what should players do if they simply have no 2000$ for a graphics card (4090 MSRP). He said "get a better job, or maybe a second job. Then you'll be able to afford it")

For anyone looking for a cheap Intel processor that is perfectly capable of 60FPS at 1440p, I recently upgraded from an i5 8600k to an i7 9700K and I went from unplayable frames in cities and about 30-40FPS in space, to a steady 50-60 fps anywhere in the game. It cost £100 instead of the £500 it would have cost to upgrade my motherboard and processor to the ones that everyone recommends for SC and I get the same FPS as each of my friends that play with brand new hardware. Arena commander can sit at 70+ fps comfortably. It is the last generation of processors from Intel that did not use hyperthreading and e-cores, both negatively affect performance in SC. It has 8 cores and 8 threads, which is the absolute sweet spot for SC. It can achieve a higher core speed than the processors that everyone recommends as well. I have it paired with a 1080ti 11gb than I have had for nearly a decade now, and it still doesn't bottleneck the system at all and does not go above 80% in VRAM usage. Can't wait for the engine updates, because I'm expecting to have the FPS locked at roughly 75 with how it currently runs.

Yes, AMD has Ray Tracing on the RX6000 and RX7000 series GPUs, but it is a generation behind Nvidia. That means with Ray Tracing the AMD RX6000 series cards perform as well as RTX20 series Nvidia cards. The AMD RX7000 series cards ray tracing performance is on par with RTX30 series cards. So a RX6900 is on par with a RTX2080 and a RX6600 is on par with a RTX2060. Moving up a generation The RX7900 is on par with a RTX3090 in ray tracing performance and a RX7600 is on par with a RTX3060. From everything I have heard you don't want to use ray tracing on the low end cards regardless of generation or manufacturer. The RTX4000 series doesn't seem to have a significant improvement over the RTX3000 series, with the RTX4090 being in a class of its own (nothing competes with the 4090). Also the AMD cards are better as regular rasturization than the Nvidia cards and the the AMD cards cost less for better performance than Nvidia. I currently have a Sapphire Pulse AMD RX6800. I haven't had driver instability problems and the one time I thought I did it actually turned out to be a bad Gskill RAM stick (replaced for free under Gskill's lifetime warranty).
