Have spent decades carrying a Trangia stove. Contemporary stoves outclass this easily for speed - but - when in the bush I ain't ever been in a hurry. I love the noise free aspect of alcohol / Metholated spirit stoves when compared to others. I like the flame control / simmer cap of the Trangia. Enter the Goshawk OP-100 - very much like the Tangia on steriods. The only downside of metho is iot will not ignite if it gets too cold so if you're heading into the Alps perhaps gas or shellite aka white spirit stoves would serve you better.

You can also put pure carbon fiber felt into the Trangia stove making a kind of wick so it also holds your fuel into the stove a little better. On mine it slows the burn time of the denatured alcohol with the same amount of heat output as usual. Rubbing alcohol (70-91%) will give off fumes that you can smell when using the stove. I know this because of my indoors testing with the Trangia for heating water. It also causes more soot on your pots than the denatured or high grade alcohols. Not sure of your location, I'm in the USA, but high grade vodka (100-150 proof) or Everclear (200 proof) will work in a pinch, but you can't use anything flavored, with sugar, or tinted. For the weight and bulk of the table you could almost use a Trangia 27 base and shield. It makes a very stable base and is approved for burn ban areas in many locations. Get a Trangia bottle too. They make pouring easy and you don't have to worry about splashing or spilling any when fueling. You won't have the flaring you have shown here on lighting the stove. Take Care and Stay Safe.

I agree. Thanks for the comment. Carbon felt works great

I don’t know about Iceland, but in mainland Europe I’ve rarely seen a big bottle of isopropyl alcohol at a grocery store or even a pharmacy. You’re more likely to find methylated spirits or bio-ethanol at a hardware store or sporting goods/camping supply store, which can be decanted into an MSR-style fuel bottle for safer transport and more accurate pouring.

@ wow I didn’t realize they don’t have it. I’ll have to look further into this. Thanks

Try "No Spill Alcohol Stove".

Saw a video a guy tested the best fuel fir alcohol stoves. Some burned faster and hitter some slower and more efficent etc. as far as cost, 91% isopropyl alcohol won. It was basically same as yellow bottle of heat. The high 200 proof alcohol is not cost efficient at all.

If I were you, I’d just take the Trangia with a small pot stand and the windscreen; the Nano and table are pretty bulky for what you’re using them for, and the can stove is just redundant.

I wonder how a propane/butane burner with a long hose would work for this stove?

@@melissahoffman4687 I like the firebox scout. It’s half as wide as the Trangia Storm Cooker at 4” wide

I really liked your common sense, practical evaluation of these alchol stoves. My recommendation, if you are ever doing anything similar again, would be to adopt a "two-phase" approach to your cooking dilema. Take a small alchol stove for use on your "away from the car" hiking trips and have a car camping back up of a iso-butane camping stove to use at campsites. This will give you adaptability and options ie two stoves going at the same time. One to cook your dinner, the other to boil water for your tea. A small gas stove will enable you to have controlability when at a camp site. As your car will be transporting the gas stove and fuel canisters you do not have to worry about the weight. Have you tried using a small alchol stove made from an empty shoe polish tin and a small coil of log burning stove rope/cord ? Any fuel or gas canisters remaining at the end of your trip will be gladly accepted by other campers at your last campsite. Happy Trails.

Dude! It wasn't the stoves. It was the idiot with the 200 proof alcohol. ALL of those stoves have proven trakt records. It ain't the tools in this case; it's the user. Buy a bottle of HEET and take the protective barrier off of the neck of it's bottle. btw, Firebox Nano with Trangia or Turbo Gnome with Heet work really great for me.
