I'm building a rig where the goal is to have the R5C detach from everything with the SmallRig quick release plate. V mount and battery like yours, rails to the front for a matte box mount and all focus/zoom motors attached. That way you simply disconnect all the cables and release the R5C and voila, ready for photo mode! And having a handle on the cage is amazing for photo mode when having to move around a lot. Great video, and great for some inspiration!

Good stuff! Just to confirm, the Small Rig Black Mamba cage for the R5 DOES wiggle/move especially the more you mount stuff on top. This could be a huge problem because when I have the HDMI and USB C clamps in it will also move those two potentially damaging the ports over time. As Cam shoes the updated R5C version of the cage locks in at the top too where the camera strap is. I literally just ordered this new cage so THANKS Cam!
@cammackey

@Malick333 2 жыл бұрын
Update: I got the Black Mamba full cage for the R5C and works the same as Cam’s half cage. The wiggle is (mostly) eliminates by the pin that secures on the top left camera strap. This gives ZERO wiggle to the clamp/ports but still makes the right side of the cage still a tad flexible, which is fine for me cause I don’t use that side to mount anything. Hope that helps others.

For the R5C external power is a MUST. This is without a doubt the best rig I have seen for the R5C. I got mine and returned it because the battery is so bad. thanks for sharing your video on KZbin. It helped me a lot in figuring out the cine rig configuration for Canon R5C. What I'm trying to do is set up the R5C with a gimbal and wireless video transmitter(not sure which one yet but thinking about getting a Teradek). I don't need sound equipment on this setup since I won't use any sound for this shoot. If you don't mind sharing your opinion on this, what would be the best way to configure this setup? I'm using a small rig np-f battery adapter with a dummy battery and it turns on ok, but when turning off the camera it won't turn back on without powering on the battery plate again. It also will only show 25-30 min battery life, but at least the battery doesn't drain since its a 65wh battery.

Absolutely no cables needed, and you get to use the variable ND filter adapter. Canon EF 35mm 1.4 II is probably Canons best prime.

Unrelated question regarding your lens choices...I love your handheld shooting style. I shoot in a very similar way so am wondering if you've even used the 28-70 RF lens with the R5C. I know you said you don't use gimbals much and like the IS on lenses but the 28-70 doesn't have IS so I'm wondering if it's not a great lens for handheld shooting. I know the R5C has great digital IS but when I shoot with the 24-70 RF, it's very steady with both digital IS and lens IS enabled. Hey Cam! Excellent video as always! Do you still have access to an R5 because I am legitimately curious to see if shooting raw with Clog 3 enabled in-camera will give the R5 similar dynamic range performance to the R5C? CVP made a video that showed greater dynamic range in raw when you're shooting with clog 3 enabled in-camera vs clog or without a log profile enabled. Canon is doing something before debayering the raw footage in order to get around the RED patent. My theory is that whatever is "unlocking" the r5 dynamic range when shooting Raw and clog 3 in-camera is applied to all modes on the R5C, providing it with significant dynamic range advantages. But I'm curious to see if the R5 can achieve the same dynamic range with that sort of workaround that CVP discovered. To be clear, that's not Clog 3 in resolve, but shooting raw in-camera, with the clog 3 setting enabled, and then finally decoding using clog 2 in resolve!
@cammackey
@cammackey 2 жыл бұрын
Yes yes. I’ll test it maybe. Overall the footage coming out of the R5C is a step up. Even the raw. If you watch my previous video, in the raw setting the R5 is extremely noisy in comparison. Which will translate to less dynamic range most likely.
@kylehessling2679
@kylehessling2679 2 жыл бұрын
@@cammackey Yeah I watched it too and that's why I'm so confused lol did you shoot those tests with clog 3 enabled in-camera? I'm wondering if that could fix it because CVP shows an entire extra stop of DR when they enabled it and shot Raw!

@cammackey 2 жыл бұрын
@@kylehessling2679 yes clog 3 on both. Maybe you’re confused. Cause I showed the R5 in raw looks better than it’s standard h265… but the R5C in raw is still better than it’s XF AVC and the R5 in all it modes.
@kylehessling2679
@kylehessling2679 2 жыл бұрын
@@cammackey Oh no, I totally understand that! I was just curious if the Raw was shot as Clog 3 in camera and then decoded using Clog 2 in resolve. I have found that to be leaps and bounds superior to any other mode in the R5. It's strange because Raw should be Raw no matter what profile you shoot, but there is about an extra stop of DR when you shoot Raw and Clog in-camera, and then use Clog 2 in post-production. Just curious because the dynamic range is really the only reason I would switch to the R5C, but the time it takes to switch between stills and video for me is also a major factor. The R5 is milliseconds vs the R5C allegedly takes like 8 seconds between photo and video mode. Here's that video from CVP kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y5Obg5-eZruAl7s

@@kylehessling2679 yes I did a video on the R5 speaking about that, I was one of the original to figure that out. Even when I spoke to Tyler stalmen he was like wait.. you figured this out before anyone else haha. And I’ve used the R5c on 4 gigs now. The switching isn’t an issue. KZbinr like to complain about shit without ever using it on an actual gig. Get it and try it for yourself. I use to use my Komodo on super run and gun gigs.. and that took a minute too boot up and 3-5 minutes to black shade.

As far as batteries go, I’ve found using a small 12500 PD bank ($90) plus the stock battery gets me about 4+ hrs. If you are running rails you can easily mount underneath your rig. Or, fasten it on your belt, or put in your pocket. There’s no need at all to do the whole rear mounted or even v-mounted solutions unless that’s your thing. 😘

I fully use my camera. I put it in a lot of compromised situation so I need it built out properly. Otherwise things get ripped off and broken. Yes there’s a lot of ways to rig it, but I ain’t about to show up to a $20k gig with a power bank rubber band to the camera 😂

@@cammackey LOL I hear ya, I was talking to other people looking for less bulky solutions than vmount. But you only look like a dumbass if you rig it like a dumbass with rubber bands. Nice flex though. 😘

@@cammackey If you want to run a power bank just attach the SmallRig Aluminum Power Bank Holder (BUB2336) to the SmallRig Dual 15mm Rod Battery Hinge (MD2802) instead of the V-Mount battery plate and you're good. Everything else stays the same and it looks at least semi-pro. I'm Using the Anker PowerCore III Elite 19200 60W power bank based on your setup and it is beautiful.

@@wwestphalen def wouldn’t run a power bank personally. Vmounts are industry standard, you’ll be able to use them no matter what camera you end up upgrading too. And the voltages are higher standard compared powerbanks which can give you issues. And mounting wise.. there’s a million options for vmounts. Basically I’ve learned to invest into gear that’ll last me years while also being able to be used across multiple platforms.

Wait what? When you putting a dummy battery you actually cannot shoot 8K 60p? That is a major issue. Any solution for that?

I think there’s a workaround but requires a lot of long cables through canons accessory. I’m sure someone will make a smart dummy battery tho so it’ll work
