With my R5C, I get around 8 hours of recording time with the Anker 87w power bank. With 25600 mah, It works quite well, lasting about 2 1/2 times longer then average v mount batteries. However, it's less convenient to to mount on a rig.

My rig is built around the Anker battery, using the SmallRig power bank holder. Works like a charm, it’s low profile, and balanced as it lays flat. I even have a 2nd Anker battery, using the same power bank holder, attached to my RSI2. Works all day (wedding videographer ~8-10h).

thank you so much for this! I bought a R5C but didn't have the time to buy the cage and stuff yet. Now I got an upcoming job and delivery dates for cages are 3-4 weeks... it's just a small job but I didn't even think to use the battery grip, which I own for the R5 cause I didn't think it would fit. Will do the job until the rest arrives. Had a production in July with the R5C and had to switch the normal batteries every 15min which was getting really tricky in the end of the day because the charging didn't keep up with the camera running out of battery.

This is a very nice video showing compact options with the R5C. This convinced me more about getting this camera, especially for having the ability to shoot great pictures. It is a very good option for documentary and even for making short films with this setup you just shown. You just add a wireless go and a separate sound system, like a Zoom H5/H6 with a boom and a decent shotgun microphone with a timecode generator and you are good to go! Thanks for the follow up!

Josh, I'm testing the new Smallrig 99 V-Mount battery and I'm having some issues. The battery has basiclly the same specs as the FxLion in your video and was wondering if the FxLion has the same issues. Using the USB-C the camera will not recognise the Smallrig battery when it's powered on. If the camera is turned on, the only way it will recognize the external battery is to unplug and then plug it back in. At that time the camera battery icon on the lcd screen turns gray and I know it' running on the Smallrig. Just realized today that if the camera's internal battery is less that 100% the camera will detect the Smallrig when it's turned on and off, basically it works as you would expect. I have tried 3 different PD rated cables including the one that came with the camera. Also, I have the cable you use in your video. I have another cable coming in a few days but I'm thinking it might be a firmware issue. BTW it will charge the battery via USB-C when the camera is off. I have a long email sent to Smallrig trying to get answers but nothing yet. This battery is so new that there's hardly anyone talking about it. I was wondering if you are having any issues like this using the Fxlion battery. Thanks
@Josh_Sattin
@Josh_Sattin 2 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry to hear you are having issues. I didn't have any of those issues, but I also don't have a R5C anymore. The only weird thing that I encountered was that you need to have a battery in the camera for USB C PD to work. Hopefully Smallrig gets back to you about it.

It makes sense why people choose the C70 over the R5/C. Once you rig it up to be useful it ends up costing the same as the C70. The difference comes down to built in ND vs full frame sensor.

The statistic I researched with batteries is cost per watt-hour. The Canon batteries, even the third party types, cost around $3.64 per watt-hour ( $/Wh ). The V mount batteries I found were cheaper but still in the $2 / Wh range. The bulk AA size batteries from battery sellers came in at about $1/Wh. The lowest cost batteries are the “power bank” type batteries - batteries designed to recharge an iPhone or laptop. I found on Amazon a HenHot battery at $0.65 / Wh. And there are cheaper ones AND the competition is very stiff and so the price is plummeting rather aggressively. I have no doubts that in 6 months there will be bigger, better, and cheaper batteries being offered. They are also have way more energy. Many in the 100 Wh range and some as high as 200 Wh range. There are some catches. Most batteries advertise on Amazon only their mAh (milliamp hours) which is somewhat useless. But it seems that this is at 3.3 volts so you can take the stated mAh and multiple by 3.3 to get the mWh - then divide by 1000 to get watt-hours. Some brands advertise Wh on the web site so a little digging will produce better numbers. The other thing to watch out for is USB-C PD comes in several different flavors. (Technically, different output voltage capabilities.). The R5C requires just under 20 watts in the 8K 60p mode (with the lenses I’ve tested). Be sure to check that the power bank can deliver this type of power *from* *a* *single* *port*. Many of them say that they have four ports and so they can deliver some astounding amount of power but they can’t deliver that power out a single port. As usually with Chinese consumer products on Amazon, there is a TON of advertising hype so please read and research AND… don’t be ashamed to just send the crap that doesn’t work back to Amazon. It is what they signed up for by allowing the vague descriptions in the first place. Now… mounting it is going to be more challenging. I’m using just some Velcro straps right now. Not pretty but I consider it still a work in progress.

Hows the Power pack working now? Im interested in going that route but like you said mounting might be tricky
@pedzsan
@pedzsan 2 жыл бұрын
@@sundersquare Well... it is working for me but I'm not sure that counts for much. I use it for things like time lapse. On my R5C, I have the battery grip which holds two batteries. Generally that is enough power for what I'm doing. I'm mostly VERY idle right now (for the past 6 or more months) due to various personal reasons (not medical). I think I'm going to be able to get out and be more active at the first of 2023. Hyperjuice finally released their product. It looks super sweet but it is now $250 for a 100Wh which brings it in as one of the most expensive options. The neat features are that it tells you a lot of information on its display. I've resisted buying one so far. It ISN'T a good deal but it hits a lot of my geek buttons. They also have a four port USB-C charger that seems competitively priced. I'm trying to wait until I have a real need before buying more toys.

I really like your assembly. The idea of the compact battery installed behind the R5C is great and is much better than the power-bank attached with adhesive under the gimbal mount. With no monitor and no microphone (or maybe even a microphone) I hope your system is well digested by the DJI RS3 Pro! Thanks again from Italy! @@Josh_Sattin

Hey! I have a question: I hear everyone talk about batterylife in film-mode. However its a hybrid camera and I cant seem to find what the batterylife is if you are only in Photomode. thoughts?

I really don't do much photography. It should have similar battery life in photo mode to the Canon R5.

I have the exact same rig, and I just received my d-tap dc cable to run the ninja v from the fxlion nano one simultaneously. Unfortunately it turns out that the fxlion nano one can’t provide power to both the ninja v and power delivery via usb-c to the R5c at the same time. I will have to look into other monitor options with less power draw, or maybe a more capable battery. Just thought you guys should know.
@volkom91
@volkom91 2 жыл бұрын
Upon further investigation the problem might have been that the fxlion nano one was at a low charge. After charging it to full it seems to work now, but it might drop the usb-c power delivery after a certain point. I will test this further next week.

Can you balance it on a gimbal with just the cage and battery. I was thinking about getting a titon base but they are expensive and out of stock everywhere
@Josh_Sattin

It will depend on the gimbal, but the cage and an internal battery it shouldn't be a problem on any decent sized gimbal.

Great video Josh. How would you approach using the battery grip and a top handle? As the battery grip would restrict you from using a cage? Also, how is the battery life if only in photo mode (with a single battery)? Many thanks!

No. You can't run a dummy battery in the battery grip and as soon as you slide out that battery tray the camera will turn off. USB C power delivery is the best option.
