Saw the catch n cook on the thumbnail and thought I was going to actually see you eat some of your catch! But alas was not to be! I wouldn't have been able to resist a couple of those Brookies...first trout I ever ate. My grandparents had a farm that ran along the shoreline of Lake Leelanau Michigan near Traverse City. It was around 1963. The water for the house came from a spring that started way up behind the house and ran past the kitchen on the other side of the gravel drive, then under the paved rd, across a pasture, through a marshy cedar "swamp" and into the lake. The spring run was lined with cedars near the house and was only around 2ft wide with a couple of holes maybe 4ft across. There was a lot of watercress. My Dad got me a cane pole and we dug some worms. You'd find a patch of dark open water among the cress and as soon as you dipped your worm in ,there would be a stout tug and you'd pull up a Brook Trout. Usually around five to seven inches long..with a couple of bigger ones now and then. My Dad took me in the kitchen and heated an iron fry pan and melted butter in it. He rolled the trout in mashed up saltine cracker crumbs and fried it. I've eaten a lot of trout since then....just stockers in the last forty years or so...but I've never eaten better trout than those caught across the driveway from the kitchen. Grandparents and all but one of my ten aunts and uncles are gone now...as is the farm. I've driven by it, but folks who live around there say the spring more or less silted up and the brookies are gone...not even sure if there are any still breeding in the lake.

Brook trout are found in Lake Leelanau from time to time. Don't know whether they reproduce in the lake. My guess is, they come from the tributary streams.

I helped a friend take down his temporary summer camp in the Rockies. It was in a remote part that was hard to get too, but our 4X4's made it. It was just a small clearing in the forest with a tiny stream running beside it. The stream was about 3 feet wide at it's widest and it was loaded with Brookies. I could see them swimming everywhere, but my friend never told me about the stream, so I didn't have my fishing pole. I had planned on going back to fish it, but the snows started and I moved back to Texas before the full brunt of Winter hit. That was in Wyoming.

@@LooknFishy I learned to fish for Spotted Trout in the woods behind our farm in Northern Michigan. My dad rigged up a government pole for me (Stick with a black dacron fishing line and a hook with a worm.) We'd fish these beaver dam creeks no wider than from the tip of your hand to your elbow and catch breakfast for my grandmother to cook with about 6" to 8" brook trout. I still enjoy small streams with brooks like in your video to the larger streams with big browns. Wish one time you could make it to the UP and go after those Lake Run browns or brook trout. Very big trout that live in Superior but migrate into the streams along the shore. Thanks for the entertainment.

What boots are you wearing with all of the hiking and wading you do?
@skippylippy547
@skippylippy547 2 жыл бұрын
@Thomas Sammons Great question! I'd like to know too. 👍 Since I do the same kind of fishing Drew does in the same places I've found a well fitted wading boot with studs in the sole will allow me hike and fish all day without slipping and falling down in the streams. The streams here in Wyoming, Idaho, and Montana often have a green slime on the rocks and they are very slippery. I've been using a pair of Redington Forge boots lately. I wear out boots in a single year so I don't buy the more expensive boots which don't last much longer. In the hot summer months I don't wear waders and instead wear thin, stretchy pants with thick wool socks (Darn Tough Socks) because they dry out quickly while hiking. Hope that helps.

I eat some on occasion but talked about why I don't much anymore in the video fishing saved my life...short answer is I go for a different experience now. As far as naming areas, I do talk about the areas I'm in or leave hints. I leave bread crumbs for those that follow along on the adventure. I just don't do it in every video and if a person skips a video or only watches 3 mins...they'll never see the hints. I try to be responsible with what I put on social media so the streams stay like you see in the videos, rather then get hammered by the traffic that comes from hot spotting a stream.
