Its fascinating to watch someone work with the land and with the animals & nature instead of paving every damn thing. All the best to you & your family!

we also use a cheap broom to rub their bellies, they lay down on their side and get up to follow you for more scratching. The grandchildren have a blast making a 150 to 200 lb pig lay down for them.

Most people r amazed at what moving one animal & another around will do for the ground. Chickens do a great job but hogs really cultivate the ground. Thanks for the info & information about the hogs.

Could you address how you motivate the pigs to do your tilling for you? You did leave some rotten potatoes, you mentioned, but overall how do you do it? In my experience pigs do root a lot, but I've never seen it done evenly and everywhere as you've shown. I'm missing something, please fill us in. Thanks.

I have perennial grass & weeds that I have fraught for over 20 years, no spray because I am A organic gardener. I am going to use pigs to clean out my garden plot, any turning or compost will be a plus, I just want weed control. Nice video.

I love the way you things from back in my younger years. That is what we did when I was a child my dad would move the pigs into our garden about 1 month before winter and it was cleaned off and ready for us the next year. Oh yea we also ate some of the pigs in winter. Do you cure your own hams?
@simeonandalex8 жыл бұрын
We haven't slaughtered pigs in a while but when we do we sent them to a butcher. Afterwards we get the meat back and make our own ham, sausage, ect...

I'd be really interested in hearing how you go about making your garden from the start, I don't have any livestock but can get plenty of manure locally and I also have compost.

Your videos are so enjoyable. Your pigs and cattle...all your animals are beautiful and well taken care of. Congratulations to all your family! I wish we had KZbin and blogs when I was growing up. My Dad was a fantastic farmer. He was organic and raised pasture feed cattle and pigs before it was the "in" thing to do. We raised Hampshire Duroc cross pigs and Hereford cattle. Our pigs were gorgeous animals. Digging new potatoes was something I looked forward to every Spring. When you see the first bloom on the potato vine wait for it to die. You can go dig around the edge of the plant and find new potatoes. Steam them whole and serve with fresh butter, salt and some black pepper. Yummy stuff. See you tomorrow!

Hello! How long do need to wait to plant edibles into areas where pigs have tilled and pooped? I've heard pig poop should never be used in an edible garden, but I am having a hard time believing that. Thanks!

@simeonandalex8 жыл бұрын
It is an old Swedish breed called 'Linderödssvin'.
@Theorimlig8 жыл бұрын
Cool stuff. Turn the pigs onto that garden for a while and you won't have a weed problem anymore. :P It might not count as no-till, though. Are they Linderödssvin?

Tip about the pigs: I start when they are young and I give them pieces of bread. We get discount bread from the local stores. Pigs get out and I don't like to chase them and try to corner them. I use the bread and they follow me where ever I go. Back to the pen. Once a pig gets out and gets a taste of freedom they like it, Like Sally the cow. Easy training no chasing. This works for chickens also.
@simeonandalex8 жыл бұрын
Thanks. We do the same, just not with bread because it is not available for us.

You're so good with animals. I wish i lived closer to where i garden, then i could have a few and give them the attention they deserve. Right now i just have a leftover rabbit that didn't get sold from the pet shop. A very disturbed, unsocialized animal. She mows my grass. :D I don't mind taking in weird animals. I have 2 cats too that would have ended up euthanized. They're a totally weird slapstick trio.
@simeonandalex8 жыл бұрын
You should get some chickens.
@melovescoffee8 жыл бұрын
I know! I love chickens. I live in a micro appartement, 20 kilometers from my garden. I can not always go there every day, especially in winter and with a lot of back issues. They need steady daily attention. Especially in winter with the water. I will be looking for a new appartement or even just a room close to there soon. I just cook, sleep and shower here anyway. :D I am not someone who will neglect animals, ever.

The feral hogs here in Central Florida do the same thing to the forest bottoms and pasture lands. They are a nuisance when they do that to agricultural crops. Very powerful and smart animals.

Harvested gras that is stored in an oxygen free environment where the same process takes place like in sauerkraut for example. It is fed to the animal afterwards. So basically you don't have to dehydrate the gras as much before storying it like hay.
