If you don't have top qualifications, it doesn't matter what you write in your cover letter. Plus, with big orgs, you can't find an HR name and they likely never get read anyway. It's probably only worthwhile writing a cover letter for a small organization.

I learn so much from your videos! Keep them coming. I have a question though. If applying through the company website and it only asks for your resume, should you attach the cover letter in the same document as your resume? Or just upload the resume?

Hi there! Thanks for watching. Great question. When it comes to showcasing transferable skills while making a career change, pick skills / projects / accomplishments that can show your problem solving and leadership skills in addition to your ability to "get the job done". The lighting and the background scene in this video are superb. If I may suggest to help bring your KZbin videos to the next level some slight audio processing; a simple limiter and compressor would do wonders. Right now I'm hearing a lot of upper-end frequencies as reverberation in the room and it feels a little distracting. Just a suggestion; otherwise great video! Very informative, thanks!

@ProfessorHeatherAustin Thanks for this video. I am currently working on my cover letter for my internship applications. It is sometimes a challenge identifying the HR Manager/Hiring Manager. For instance, there are individuals who do not update their Linkedln profile regularly. Therefore, I am left wondering if they still hold the position or not. A Google search isn't always helpful and sometimes companies refuse to share the information when contacted despite you sharing the reason behind your request. It is hard to address a Cover Letter when you don't know the name of the Hiring Manager/Recruiter or even their specific job title. In some cases, I was advised by others to simply put "To Whom It May Concern". I know some persons may be turned off by the use of this, and some may even view it as outdated or lazy. The last thing I want is for it to end up in File 13. Any advice?

If I am the person who will hire people. I will ignore those great resumes and cover letters. Hundreds or millions make fake resumes and captivating cover letters, but when they go hired, they don't have the skills that the resume said . How many people have high skills and honest hard work because the resume and cover letters are not professional in that the company just lost a good working person.

All good points but ... Aargh, narrative! OMG, narrative. Bullets! That's what everyone advocates, exactly because hiring managers glance at cover letters. Reading multiple paragraphs ... you need to be writing something really outstanding and original (and be lucky) to capture a busy, bored, glossy-eyed person's attention. Ya, ya, bullets likely also a problem, but quite frankly, cover letters get ignored more often than not either way. :(

I think what you are saying is what I'm thinking. I'm trying to fire off 20 of these a day. The process that she is describing is waaaaaay too time-consuming. I'm sorry, but this is a terrible waste of valuable time when there is less than a 1% chance someone is actually going to read it. I'm literally picking through piles and favoring positions that don't want the damn cover letter. This is not a criticism of the content, but I think the instructor needs to be more realistic in terms of the TIME we have to put each of these together.

Good video, but I was slightly disappointed by the end of it. the example of the 4th paragraph (call to action) seems very generic, and lines like "I'd love to be a member of your team" seem to go against some of the prior rules. It's all about the person writing it and their wants. It also isn't a CTA, it's just the kind of passive phrases of "I would welcome .." and "I look forward to ..." I was hoping to see more informative/useful tips on a CTA.

Do people really read cover letters? I usually don't put a lot of effort into it because I could be pouring my heart out only for it to never be read.
@ProfessorHeatherAustin Жыл бұрын
Great question! Many employers do read cover letters, and they can be an important part of the application process. A well-written cover letter can help you stand out, showcase your qualifications and experience, and express your interest in the position. Tailor it to the specific job and company, and ensure that it is well-written, free of errors and easy to read. Even if not read immediately, it can be useful to have on file for future reference.
