Today I'm heading to the tourist area of Old Bangkok to check out an unbelievable Northern Thai restaurant called Huen Lanawadee. The restaurant is tucked away inside Wat Saket, better known to foreigners as The Golden Mount. I'm saying Wat Saket is underrated because although there are tourists there, it's nowhere near on the scale of Wat Arun or Wat Pho and I think it's actually a much better experience here!

About Wat Saket:
Wat Saket, also known as the Golden Mount or Phu Khao Thong, is a Buddhist temple located in the Pom Prap Sattru Phai district of Bangkok, Thailand. The temple sits atop a man-made hill, which was constructed during the reign of King Rama III in the early 19th century. The purpose of building the artificial hill was to serve as a chedi (stupa) to enshrine Buddha relics.
Key features of Wat Saket:
Golden Mount (Phu Khao Thong): The highlight of Wat Saket is the Golden Mount itself. It offers panoramic views of the city and is a popular spot for both tourists and locals. Visitors can climb a series of stairs to reach the top and enjoy the scenic surroundings.
Chedi: At the summit of the Golden Mount, you'll find a gleaming gold chedi. The structure is adorned with golden tiles and stands as a prominent landmark in the area.
Festivals: Wat Saket is particularly lively during the annual Loy Krathong festival when a large number of locals visit the temple to participate in the traditional Loy Krathong activities. The temple grounds are adorned with lanterns and decorations during this festive time.
Wat Saket Fair: The temple hosts an annual fair known as the Wat Saket Fair, typically in November. The fair includes various cultural and religious activities, traditional performances, and food stalls.
Wat Saket Museum: The temple also houses a museum where visitors can learn about the history and significance of Wat Saket. The museum displays artifacts and information related to the temple's construction and development.
Wat Saket holds historical and cultural importance in Bangkok and is a serene place for both locals and tourists to explore. The temple's distinctive architecture, combined with its hilltop location, makes it a unique and picturesque destination in the bustling city.

We really loved the area around Wat Saket but didn't get to this restaurant which you had recommended to me once before. We finished up at JEDI and told them how we found them through the Roaming Cook and they had a good laugh, we even made our way back a few days later just to get the coffee. We'll be putting this at the top of our list when we come back.

What could be better. Starting the day with a coffee by the khlong, and then some fantastic Northern Thai and some Isaan dishes to round it off before heading to the top of the Wat and the Chedi......and the view. I can't get as foodie about the food as you did here, but I would just eat as much as I could of everything. Another great video, Gary. Glad for this one, waiting for some of those Saigon videos (hope you'll share some of them), and also where you went in Chiaeng Rai which you mentioned. I'm really intrigued by the sai ua, but also by the fermented pork which I don't believe I've ever tasted. 👍

9:35 i‘m from South and that Northern version of Larb definitely better than Northeast version even Northeast Larb is way more beyond popular all over Thailand. 😅 Northern restaurant just has very less of number when you go to other part of Thailand and there are a reason quite hard for me to explained in English but any way, as you can see Northeast and Southern restaurant much easier to find in Bangkok. And... 12:49 Yes Nam Prik Ong is a lot like Bolognese because it's basically mince pork and tomato 😄

Huh, just a stones' throw from our BKK 'back-yard', Wat Sitiram, and never new about Jedi! Last trip (October?) was happy to find a kind of fancy Southern restaurant "Kajohn" on Th Chakkraphatdi Phong. Didn't get to try it, though. Next time!

I’m going bk to Thailand in mid-March till early April, due to the field burning stuff I will have to skip Chiang Mai again this time - we are booked for the sleeper train to Hat Yai then spend few days in Koh Lipe.
