Land Rover turning drivers into mechanics since 1948 👍 I’m a Landcruiser guy myself but I do love the notion of, and look of, the Defenders and the passion of the owners. We dont have that big family feel so much in Landcruiser land. I’d probably ship my Landcruiser 100 over but wondering if you’ve observed the availability of unleaded and the prices in your travels?
@GrizzlyNbearOverland4 жыл бұрын
Hey Thanks for the comment, you are right about the Land Cruiser family not being as tight as the Land Rover community. I was ten years in an 80 Series and never once got a wave or thought about waving to another Toyota driver. In the end the cars not important as long as we are getting out there :-) Unleaded is available everywhere you will have no problem, diesel is the only fuel that can be sometimes hard to come by.

Leigh, I 100% agree with the Defender family, the community you get with these trucks is like no other. Easy to fix and no technical electrics and sensors. I also love the Defender wave! ✋🏻

I grew up with a defender 1985. I loved it. My father and I drove it to any climate condition you may imagine. It is a great off road rig, however it is not the most reliable car! the most problematic parts where main leaf springs and drive shafts. We took care of it and it served us well.

Did you think about a fwc (fourwheelcamper) flatbed version when you made your choice? Downside is that you need to convert your tray in a flatbed (extra cost) but the living area inside the camper is much bigger...
@leighdearle59654 жыл бұрын
Actually yes we did consider this. You are correct we would increase our inside living space considerably but in turn we would lose all of our outside storage storage which is much more important to us. We have so the rock climbing, hiking and camping equipment that we store in the side boxes and slide our drawer. We don't want to store this gear inside the camper. There are only three 2 of us and we find we have plenty of space. Also those conversions are very costly as you mentioned.

I 100% Agree with you! The choice of vehicle comes down to what you want from it and your own personal likes/dislikes. I fully understand the Landrover thing (a number of my friends have been bitten by the bug!) and they certainly are an iconic vehicle. As you said you can overland in any vehicle or even on foot! Anyway loving the videos.... Keep safe and well.

Awesome to see the very happy healthy smiles together at the end of the video. I hope you 2 stay safe and healthy. With all of the places you have been your immune system is probably in an off road rig ready for action. I grew up seeing and camping in slide-in campers they are great. I have traveled and camped out in a variety of vehicles and tents, my old 79 blazer with a homemade tent setup was one of the best for getting places and still having a dry place to sleep no matter the weather. I traveled Northeast USA and Canada with a girl friend in a ford escort 4 door wagon. It was an inexpensive way to go and we got back into some great places. The perfect rig is the one that gets you out there so you can enjoy nature and find out what else you would like to try someday. Please stay safe, take good care of your "little frenchie" and have fun.

This was such a breath of fresh air and completely spot on!! There is no one perfect set up and other channels that create videos about "THE ULTIMATE" rigs or pieces of gear, or tools, or tires, or whatever are all just clickbait and the lowest form of content there is because as you've already said, it's all a personal choice and what's best for you won't necessarily be the best or someone else. You guys are awesome, thanks so much for sharing your journey. If you're ever in NYC let me know, I'll take you guys to the Gunks (my local-ish crag) or we can boulder in Central Park : )

To be honest, I never really paid any attention to the category of these popup pickup cabins until seeing your channel. And I have to admit that it does sound like a good compromise between offroad capabilities, living space, ship'ability and a relatively small footprint. We're currently in South America with a car of similar weight and size (except for height) as yours and even though I thought a lot of Unimogs (the interesting 435 version can these days be had for relatively cheap in perfect condition from the German fire brigades, as they're sold after 30 years of service...!) I'm now super happy that we didn't go that route. So many bridges are either too narrow or have weight restrictions. They are undoubtedly super capable in open terrain and feel a bit "safer" in general maybe. But for a trip around the world and the needed flexibility, a smaller car is a great choice. We're super happy with our drive at the moment but I'll certainly look into the popup pick up category for a possible next car for sure! Thank you, you two!

Thanks mate 😉 Actually we have a Propex LPG hot water unit but we never use it. Chews through too much gas. We'll be getting rid of it at the first opportunity. Hi Leigh, fully understand your points. We got a Unimog now for 15 years and yes, sometimes the rig is too big. For a family of four and a dog it was still a very good choice, brought us to scandinavia, Iceland and Tunesia and many small trips around Europe. Now with the kids being adults and out of the house, I consider building a smaller pop-up-cabin (max height 2,8 m) to allow even more offroad capability. Thanks for your thoughts and keep up making such nice vids!
