In this mid week video we talk overland set ups and why we chose Grizzly the Four Wheel Camper and Bear the Land Rover Defender to carry us on this multi year journey around the world.
The title may be misleading and we know this set up is not for everyone but we do honestly believe that we have the perfect set up to suit our needs in this global overland journey.
Join us as we travel the world overland, exploring the cultures and traditions of all the countries we visit.
In our Land Rover Defender camper which is our full time home we will take you rock climbing, hiking and exploring across all the continents on this planet.

Nicely done Leigh! You do know that there is an old Australian axiom that goes something like this: If you intend to venture into the Australian bush, you need a Land Rover. If you ever intend to return, you need a Toyota. :))

Hey mate iv Owned Land Cruisers Nissan Patrols and Drove them in the Mountains Narly terrain and now I own a 2006 4LTV6 Discovery 3 and would never go back the Land Rover is way better than the Land Cruisers and Part's are less than half Price of Toyota Parts. So Land Rover's are the Best I should know I'm a Mechanic. Get your Parts from John Craddock UK thanks Lads Oioi

Land Rover turning drivers into mechanics since 1948 👍 I’m a Landcruiser guy myself but I do love the notion of, and look of, the Defenders and the passion of the owners. We dont have that big family feel so much in Landcruiser land. I’d probably ship my Landcruiser 100 over but wondering if you’ve observed the availability of unleaded and the prices in your travels?
@GrizzlyNbearOverland

Hey Thanks for the comment, you are right about the Land Cruiser family not being as tight as the Land Rover community. I was ten years in an 80 Series and never once got a wave or thought about waving to another Toyota driver. In the end the cars not important as long as we are getting out there :-) Unleaded is available everywhere you will have no problem, diesel is the only fuel that can be sometimes hard to come by.

Thankyou for this video! I have this dream of doing what you are doing! Maybe not on the same scale, and it will be in a Landrover, I have owned 4 series lll's! Is your Defender modified to take all the extra weight? I know you said it is below the limit, just wondered! Many excellent points that people possibly could not envisage. Many thanks, from Lockdown Asuturias. (N. Spain)

Did you think about a fwc (fourwheelcamper) flatbed version when you made your choice? Downside is that you need to convert your tray in a flatbed (extra cost) but the living area inside the camper is much bigger...
@leighdearle5965
@leighdearle5965 4 жыл бұрын
Actually yes we did consider this. You are correct we would increase our inside living space considerably but in turn we would lose all of our outside storage storage which is much more important to us. We have so the rock climbing, hiking and camping equipment that we store in the side boxes and slide our drawer. We don't want to store this gear inside the camper. There are only three 2 of us and we find we have plenty of space. Also those conversions are very costly as you mentioned.

Great channel. Love Defenders but as they are discontinued now & therefore extremely expensive cult vehicles, I think they are destined to slowly disappear and become history (sadly). You guys spend a lot of time repairing, fixing, and maintaining that Landy!. How do you cope with that? It would drive me absolutely crazy! Anyway, thanks for sharing your awesome experiences. Stay safe & sound guys! Happy new year!

To be honest, I never really paid any attention to the category of these popup pickup cabins until seeing your channel. And I have to admit that it does sound like a good compromise between offroad capabilities, living space, ship'ability and a relatively small footprint. We're currently in South America with a car of similar weight and size (except for height) as yours and even though I thought a lot of Unimogs (the interesting 435 version can these days be had for relatively cheap in perfect condition from the German fire brigades, as they're sold after 30 years of service...!) I'm now super happy that we didn't go that route. So many bridges are either too narrow or have weight restrictions. They are undoubtedly super capable in open terrain and feel a bit "safer" in general maybe. But for a trip around the world and the needed flexibility, a smaller car is a great choice. We're super happy with our drive at the moment but I'll certainly look into the popup pick up category for a possible next car for sure! Thank you, you two!

Awesome to see the very happy healthy smiles together at the end of the video. I hope you 2 stay safe and healthy. With all of the places you have been your immune system is probably in an off road rig ready for action. I grew up seeing and camping in slide-in campers they are great. I have traveled and camped out in a variety of vehicles and tents, my old 79 blazer with a homemade tent setup was one of the best for getting places and still having a dry place to sleep no matter the weather. I traveled Northeast USA and Canada with a girl friend in a ford escort 4 door wagon. It was an inexpensive way to go and we got back into some great places. The perfect rig is the one that gets you out there so you can enjoy nature and find out what else you would like to try someday. Please stay safe, take good care of your "little frenchie" and have fun.

Very nice video. The subject of the right overland vehicle is indeed a personal matter. Toyota has (generally) the build quality going for it, in addition to a wide network of skilled mechanics. There is limited sense of community as the individual traveler is just one of many. Mercedes G are often seen among the wealthy, in versions far removed from it's originally designed purpose. Build strong, but has it's flaws too. You have to be your own qualified mechanic - as my experience is that less than 1% of those who work at any garage (dealership or not) should be allowed to do anything other than changing the oil. My G is a basic workhorse version, it confuses people - unless they served in the army, they don't know what they are looking at. We get to see many people looking like one big questionmark. Landrover will get you friends you never knew you had. And with the right friends - everything is possible. Locating a sparepart or a mention of a nice place to camp. You are now part of a tribe, spanning everything from the lowly worker to the billionaire CEO. Sounds about right?? :-D

Nice video...good job for your second own video, Leigh ;-) But one vehicle you did not think of: a T3 Syncro. Just wanted to mention that ;-) Cheers!

How do you find the weight distribution , is the camper putting to much weight on the rear axle, and how is the center of gravity, i have seen some overlanders that are so top heavy they are dangerous.
@leighdearle5965

We definitely have more weight over the rear axle. We compensated this by installing dual rear shock absorbers and air bags inside the heavy duty coils. We like the fact that we have a low centre of gravity and are not top heavy.

In the states the Jeep Wrangler owners are quite similar to Landie owners overseas. They say things like "It's a Jeep thing." They wave at each other as they pass each other. Of course they also have the active p*n*s size competition by talking about who has the most mods on their Jeep. Overall the two communities are quite similar to each other in spirit. The Jeep owners, however, tend to be blue jeans wearing, blue color types so you will hear more comments of "built not bought" indicating that they did most of the mods themselves.

Hi Leigh and Steph, That is a great video. I am following most of your program since you started in Paris. As a person how is interested for overlapping, can you explain why you did not choose Landcruiser D-cap 79?

Leigh, terrific overview of your expedition around the world. Seems as though you hade a spate of breakdowns in the ‘stans regions. and now things have changed in that regard, perhaps your roads have been better. Where to from Japan? North America perhaps? How about the Aleutian Islands then Alaska...

I love Toyotas for their reliablity, but I find they have NO personality. They are very bland, they give you little to no road feedback. Reliabilty has been excellent for us in our Land Rover LR3. I am a licensed technician, so most things get repaired before breakage. Great videos by they way. :)

It is the perfect overlander. What an amazing set-up so practical and full of character just like defender owners lol. Love my defender completely different to my Toyota and Nissan which were just vehicles. Keep safe 👍

Well made video, excellent content and well presented. One thing that would interest me though is with Bear being registered in France, how do you deal with the roadworthiness certification and registration when this comes up for renewal? Especially as some of your upgrades (bullbar!) maynot be totally EU conform!

I really hate to admit it, but I think your overland rig setup is simply more practical than my own 4x4 T1N Sprinter. I've yet to take it through Central Asia yet, but hope I can get down some of those roads in the high top.

I totally agree with the choice of the 4w camper when traveling around the world. I put min thow on a toyota tacoma and drove frome San Francisco to Buenos Aires. I did not have a singel accident or damage on the hole 33k km tour. So i`l go for a Toyota again ( hm, maybe a tundra). But then i`m not in a LR familiy - i see that. Take care - love your vlogs. As comfortable those Unimogs and huge trucks can be as a living space, then as a vehicle in offroad conditions, then I would always go for something smaller and more nimble. Although not a huge fan of the Land Rover then their size is practical. Also as someone who lives in Iceland and our mountain roads are only passable for a part of every year, then it has to be said that those huge trucks that come in every summer are way too big to be practical here. I am seeing some Scania, Man and Unimogs, some using 6x6 tires and weigh close to 20 tons. Our mountain roads are just not suitable for that size. In my opinion, something the size of the Defender makes it ideal to travel the world as an overlanding vehicle.
