🤔 One of the best pieces of advice I've ever been given regarding scheduling and time blocking.... "What gets scheduled, is what gets done." It's so simple but it's 100% true.
@Gameroomschoolhouse Жыл бұрын
🤔 The shut- down complete idea hit me like a ton of bricks. I’m a work from home homeschooling mom and I never feel like I’m done with my work. It occurred to me that I could use that top section to define what “complete” might mean for that day and if I achieve that, check off the box and call it a day, rather than going to bed with a ton of anxiety about what I didn’t get done that day. Great video!
@ParkerNotes Жыл бұрын
100%! Write down the tasks for the day, you can even time block when you will do them, then once they're done ✔️ the box and feel at ease. I have a lot of jobs and I definitely feel a similar anxiety about not being done. But once I've agreed on what a successful day looks like, I don't sweat the extra and I can sleep

I use both, as it is easier to hold large amounts of information on an app like Notion while using teamspades. But, everything is filtered through a catch all Field Notes / Bullet Journal. It acts like my filter to my digital world. I find organising tasks digitally on the go is so clunky, but can be useful to have an overview of projects. Even if I go on once a day to just update tasks/projects etc, the analogue pocket notes doesn’t leave my side. I feel naked going out inside without it

🧐 In my undergraduate work I was a double major in biblical studies and social and political sciences. Also, I minored in Christian philosophy. I just came upon your post in KZbin. I’m old now, 62, and I’m dealing with a brain injury from a bad car wreck. Although I practiced law for 25 years, I had to hand in my law license and return my driver’s license. But you know I understood what you were saying! 🎉 And it’s been years since I’ve had any type of philosophical conversations with anybody! I guess some philosophy was presented and discussed in law school, but that was the class of 1989. I’m looking for forward to following you on KZbin. Thank you.

Great stuff, Parker. I discovered your channel recently as I’ve been pushing myself to journal as a source of introspection and reflection. I’m in my mid-40’s and it’s hard to change habits but so far it’s been worth it. I’ve found your videos to be relatable and provide great inspiration for those of us with similar goals and mindset. Keep it up. As an aside, I’m just over a year into my BJJ journey. It’s been one of the most humbling experiences of my life, but also extremely rewarding. It’s forced me to reflect on some of the things I thought I knew about myself. I believe that’s one of the reasons I’ve begun reflecting more on other areas of my life. Thanks 🙏🏻

I’ve fallen in and out of bullet journaling previously, and have often felt frustrated when I don’t stick to my predetermined time blocks. I really like that you included what to do when that happens, and leave intentional space for things to go ‘off the rails’. Lots to think about here. I recently retired (11/23/23), and am in awe of how much time I have on my hands now. I find myself gravitating toward adding structure to my life - weird, right? I bought the book for my Kindle shortly after I heard him on a Bigger Pockets interview, but unfortunately, I haven't even started reading the book. 2 years ago, I attempted to give bullet journaling a try, but found myself only duplicating what I already used efficiently digitally. A few months ago, I downloaded the Day One journal app and have enjoyed using it with the option to scan a handwritten page into the digital journal, if I choose. I have however, started using a notebook as a journal for work, which hasn't been too bad so far and I actually look forward to writing something in it at the end of the day, no matter the length of what is written.

I think Technological Determinism vs Optimism comes down to perspective. Determinism applies strongly to and from the manufacturer of the technology and perhaps the Early Adopters that are steeped in the field. Optimism applies to and from the perspective of the users of the technology, and usually is not realized until it is more widely implemented. An example would be the gang nail plate, which was designed out of Miami to help redesign roof truss systems and prevent them from being ripped off homes during hurricanes. This type of hardware would go on to being the main reason for efficient roof building, which would kickstart the building of McMansions. So the determinist view would have held that the gang nail fastener is to efficiently design strong roofs, whereas the optimist view would hold it to be associated with McMansions and cheap quick easy construction.

🤔I need to get back in to time blocking. I might consider this vs having a full year planner. I've used a Weekly Passion Planner the past 2 years and really enjoy it (used the daily blank dated one before that but realized I hardly used it so moved to the weekly) but I'm having trouble remembering to come back to the planner to look at and complete tasks. It's large so I don't carry it with me all the time like I can a pocket notebook in my pocket. Food for thought!

Love the idea of the daily metrics. Definitely something I need to incorporate 🤔

🤔 Great content mate! Not having read Digital Minimalism yet, I now know my way forward with tech. Side note, the bujo leuchturrm paper is perfect for fountain pens!

Pro tip: put the index/TOC in the back of the notebook and work it towards the front in order to minimize wasted pages due to over or under allocating the size of the TOC upfront. What is ironic is that this is a concept that comes from my computer science background with an extremely technology-forwards focus on data systems. :-D Not sure time blocking like this would work for me as the overhead of reallocating time blocks to account for shifting priorities would be too expensive and I could easily see myself shedding load by simply not transcribing the queue adjustments. Many of my tasks, whether it is debugging or designing, are not bound monotonically; if I get to the "end" of a time block but am "in the zone" it is easier to simply ignore the next task and continue working while state is loaded in my head. But using what is effectively a write ahead log for wetware to keep track of ideas for later seems useful, especially working on a longer duration scale. The trick is, going back and the end of the day and putting those ideas somewhere easily referenced in the future.

🤔:1 For my own use, I think I will test out time blocking periodically for days that are outside of my normal routine. Sundays mostly. I periodically make timelines of what an ideal week day would look like, time blocking will be taking over this task 100%. 🤔:2 Digital Minimalism you say? This is going on my Audible docket once I am done The Great Mental Models Vol. 3. Good work!

🤔 I needed to slow this one done and process it. I've used a bujo for years, but recently gave up on time blocking just because it seemed a bit too controlling or rigid. But dipping back into Newport here makes me reconsider. I think I'll go back to combining them for a while. Thanks for this video!
