I completely understand and relate! Having bits and pieces of information spread across several areas can be very overwhelming - where too look first for important information?! I am planning on doing a full video where I show how to allocate different bits of information to other places, but in the meantime, I will explain it briefly here as well 😇 My current planner system consists of my pocket notebook, a Hobonichi Weeks planner, and a commonplace notebook (I also have a pocket bujo, but it isn't relevant here lol). I will sift through my pocket notebook at the end of each day and decide what to do with each piece of info. If it's a completed to-do, I scrap it; if it's a piece of information that I want to keep (like a lifehack, or a quote), it goes to my commonplace notebook; and if it's a task or to-do that isn't date-specific, I will throw it into my Hobonichi Weeks! I also have a sheet of paper that I call my "too heavy to hold" section, but there will be more on that later 😜

Thank you so much for this. I keep a bullet journal, wanted to begin a commonplace-notebook. I was wondering how to merge them, what to use in the bullet journal etc. You provided mw with a solution: Journaling in the small notebook and then migrating the things that are worth migrating into my bullet journal or my commonplace notebook. That also saves my bullet-journal from becoming cluttered. I also liked your analogy about the landing place and the beehive, thats exactly how I see it. What is so therapeutic about journaling on paper is the absence of noise. When I open my notebook to start writing the noisy everyday environment fades into the background and I'm starting to relax. I read Bertram Russels 'Conquest of happiness' recently and he describes sound and noise as a stressor.

I have one dedicated Field Notes book for capturing. It's my analog brain. If it's in my head, I write it down. Nothing is off limits as far as what goes in it. It's the first and most important layer of my system. If your thinking is in one place, it can easily be allocated elsewhere or handled there and then. Having a holistic view of your thoughts is life changing. It can help you see if your expending yourself to much, if some months really are buisier than others, and keep mid and long term items just as relevant as the short term. My pocket notebooks are indispensible.

The truth is we don't need to write everything down. We don't need to constantly be taking notes or making lists. We don't need to be constantly entertained or stimulated. Truly I say this with all the love in my heart because I've watched a few of these notebook videos and I see the same inherent mistake that people make with their smartphones. That is the constant need for stimulation and the constant need for interaction with something other than our own minds. Certainly there are some things we should write down but they are not nearly as prevalent as what is generally depicted in these notebook videos. It makes no sense to write down lists of things you'll never do. The truth is if you don't do it right now it probably won't get done.

The "if you don't do it right now, it will never be done" is the exact mindset I have right now and IS HARMFUL!!! Why? Because I get bogged down with only the momentary thoughts and actions and never something of true meaning and long term achivement. Yes, we don't need to write everything down, but I would rather write it down than forget about it entirely! Especially if that something is a thought towards my own betterment in the long run!

You should look into Ruby Granger's video on commonplace notebooks! Similar idea!

How / what do you migrate to your Weeks? I ask because coincidentally I've started doing this, but have found it hard to know what the primary purpose of my weeks is, other than a calendar.
