Honestly, I have way to many problems. But the only one I want to really go into is the Phantom's red death outfit. It seemed they just wanted the movie outfit. The real beauty of the west end and broadway outfit is the mask being two seperate parts. And of course, the more historically accurate outfit, as the more ruffles you had, the richer you were.
@FeatheredWingz3 жыл бұрын
If you guys are curious as to why the set is different, it's the tour version. I'm in Canada and this is the same N.America tour staging that came to Toronto a few times in the last 10 years. The classic staging is generally used only on more permanent venues now, like London's West End and Broadway. The classic set design proved too problematic & costly when it toured before; most theatres are architecturally unique and there were issues with setting up the chandelier in particular in a safe way for a few venues, from what I've heard. Older theatres in particular often have structural and preservation related issues. The set isn't quite as grand and impressive, I admit. I like the way the mirror scene is presented in the classic version better as well as the Overture staging. But the chandelier drop is a lot more fun and exciting this way, in my opinion! No spoilers but get Orchestra seating if you can ;) And I do like how more of this set is utilized in the "Phantom of the Opera" number as the Phantom leads Christine to his lair; the iconic back 'n' forth "leading" walk in the classic version is cool and all but I appreciate how this version shows just how much effort it takes to get to the Phantom's hidden abode. I do also remember one bright pyro effect in particular during the show that was apparently really hot, I felt the heat of it on my face in the middle-back of Orchestra seating. So, I say give it a chance. If nothing else excites you for this version, a live orchestra playing Webber's music loud enough to reverberate in your bones is always a rare treat!
@tothemilkywayx3 жыл бұрын
Huh weird. Because in the world tour of POTO for 2018, the set was all original and almos the exact copy of the westend/broadway production. And they are travelling in differe countries for an entire year.
@Nargon463 жыл бұрын
I have seen this version twice, and while it definitely had stuff that I liked, it is not for me. I love the bigger orchestra, cool special effects, and pretty much everything technical wise, but the storytelling is just weak compared to the OG (hehe). In trying to go for a kind of in-between of the original and the movie, they stripped a lot of the emotion from the characters struggles, and make it feel like the story was unfolding around the set, not the other way around like it should be. Just my opinion :)

My thoughts, EXACTLY. Masquerade without a grand staircase is like All I Ask of You (Reprise) with no chandelier drop, or like the Phantom running around with no mask. 😒
@SugarDemon10353 жыл бұрын
They took the damn staircase out of Masquerade??? What the hell... That's not a minor little change. The whole point of the staircase is to have the Phantom looming over everyone at the party; he's literally and figuratively supposed to be above their level. You can't take out the staircase without changing the meaning of that scene, which just shows me that whoever made that design choice had no idea what they were doing. I was thinking that I'd watch this production if I could find a filmed version, but now I don't even think I want to bother.

@@estellehobbins1928 Unfortunately you are being racist. Many musicals are being more inclusive with diverse casting these days. Les Miserables and Phantom are all set in France and everyone knows the characters were Caucasian therefore having someone of a different race play them doesn't change the piece. Only musicals like Hairspray, Dreamgirls, the King and I and Miss Saigon where the stories are about the clash of cultures either between black and white or asian and white insist those roles are cast specifically. I've seen a black Piangi and Norm Lewis played the Phantom and Javert too. Asian performers have played Cosette & Eponine and currently Eponine is played by a black girl in New York and London and there has been a Eurasian Christine on Broadway too. The new Christine in London will be black. We suspend disbelief when we go to the theatre and this is one of the examples of how we allow the talent to speak for itself and not cloud it with our obvious prejudices.

I saw the show twice when it originally played Sydney at the Theatre Royal between 1993-1996, and again when it returned to play the Lyric in 2008. Needless to say I was thrilled to discover it was coming back again, but I'm not supporting a cheap, stripped-back touring version which basically does away with everything magical that we associate with this show. Bjornson's set design was as integral to the telling of the story as the music and lyrics. To get rid of the Masquerade staircase, the golden angel, the candles in the lake and the original chandelier effects is nothing short of a tragedy. To the people excited about seeing this version, congratulations. You will probably enjoy it if you never saw the original (going by the many comments I've seen of people on FB, etc, I'm guessing that most haven't, or don't personally care). That's fine. But I can't reconcile myself to seeing this show in a cheapened, diminished form. I'm hoping the brilliant original returns, maybe in another 15, 20 years. In the meantime I have a store of memories I won't allow to be diminished by wasting my hard-earned money on a ticket to see this sad, sorry shadow of the original.

Yeaaah, so, having seen this version twice now, I have to say it pales in comparison to the original. The sets are cool on their own, but they feel way less evocative of the story itself. The technical aspects, such as special effects/pyro and the grander score are amazing, but the acting direction and blocking is just odd and nonsensical. Plus the ending doesn't feel nearly as emotional or interesting. There are moments that I really like, like the mirrored ballroom in Masquerade looks amazing with everybody dancing and makes Christine seeing the Phantom everywhere even more disturbing. But then you have moments like up on the rooftop, where not only is the Phantom not above them menacingly, but he isn't even center stage (which bugs the heck out of me). Definitely worth seeing at least once, because the technical achievements are incredible! But honestly, as much as I appreciate the amazing cast, crew, and musicians, I would not pay to see this version again. Send the original production back on tour please!

Because they will use recorded music or it will be the 11-14 piece band that will play along with the recorded music. They did that with the new usa tour that used this production sets.... i walked out during intermission.
