The Philippines vs Thailand - what's the best place to retire? What are the pros and cons of living in each country? Thailand has many advantages in terms of the quality of life, but can anything beat the charming and warm people of the Philippines? Let's talk to a world traveler who's spent time in both Thailand and the Philippines, and who's trying to answer these same questions ...

For me when went to Thailand I couldn't trust ppl there on my visits because in terms of crime rates and trusting welcoming ppl the Philippines is my home away from home. Not just because of my fiancee but because the sheer fact that their president actually care thats it's obvious. I follow politics and what not in every most countries that played a factor. And I fell in love with the Philippines and the ppl there the land and my fiancee she never gives me a reason to second guess making a second home in the Philippines.

@@TheFilipinaPea I haven’t visited Phillipines yet but I have made many trips to Thailand. Have to be careful of scams, some of which are very sophisticated. Thailand has a very unusual legal system, you can end up in a Thai prison simply for writing a negative hotel review on TripAdvisor. Also two different international tourists were once incarcerated in an airport immigration scam because one bullet was found in each travelers luggage. This is crazy to think a passenger would have a bullet in their luggage.

@@wmjohns881 Likely it was the customs workers that planted the bullets. That was a big problem in the Philippines too. The customs workers would then blackmail their victims and if they didn't pay up, it was off to prison.

I had taken three trips to Thailand, but stopped going there after my first trip to the Philippines in 1997. Thailand's culture is so unique, from wild elephants roaming the streets, to all the colorful fruits and vegetables that we've never seen before in the west, to their Buddhist traditions. The Philippines feels much more familiar. Home is where the heart is. Easier to get to know a Filipina. We can always go to Thailand on vacation and enjoy the best of both worlds.

My wife is Thai, and I lived in Thailand for over six years. I can tell you my Thai family (wife's side) is more loving and accepting than my US family. They have never asked me for money, though their loving attitude makes me want to take good care of them. When I worked in Thailand, I found the parents of the kids I taught were so generous, helpful, and accepting. It's easy for me to say my life is better because of the contributions from the Thai side. Edit: You certainly cannot return anything in Thailand. All sales final. They demonstrate is works before you leave and once you walk away, that's it. ;-)

Having lived in Thailand for almost 7 years, and only visiting PI once a long time ago, I can say that Steve is "almost" right on about Thailand. Better infrastructure, medical, internet, food, physical attractiveness of the women, and roads. I never dated a bar girl, those are the ones running scams for the most part, and for any "farang" who goes there believing he will come first needs to have a wake up call. My experience being married to a Thai is that I am NOT expected to support the family at all, and I might add my wife's family are poor rice farmers, but yet they expect nothing from me. Thai people are generally friendly, quite so I think, but it is the language disparity that causes the problem. Very few speak English outside of the major tourist areas. I saw one of Pea's videos where she interviewed three women, they all expected their foreign men to help with their family, so I do find it interesting that that is considered as a negative when it comes to a Thai. Face it, Philippines or Thailand, most just want love and a better life (and some just want money). I will also say that Thai women are women... and the men are men (discounting ladyboys, lol). There are distinct roles just like PI, I don't see much difference between the two countries. No doubt the Philippines is better in the visa area, especially if you want to retire there. In Thailand, plan on parking about $25K (800,000 baht) in a Thai bank for 8 months out of the year. For me, that is the largest negative of all. I have two friends to left Thailand for Vietnam because of that. One considered PI and the other wouldn't because he lived there for a few years and had a bad experience. Anyway, just my thoughts. Keep up the videos, although I'm happily married and live in both Thailand and the US, I still enjoy learning and never miss one of your videos.

On the other hand if you want to spend MORE than lost earning potential on $25K, that's also possible. You can BUY a Thai elite visa for $5000/year. I came to the Philippines looking for you, Pea! Just joking. Being a US military vet. I’ve seen the world. I was persuaded by the cost of living. The Climate, and how easy communication was. And how friendly the whole country is toward a man of color. I was assigned to Clark AFB when President Morcos was in charge. I was here for almost four years from the beginning of 1976, until the end of 1979, then I was sent back to the US and retired in 1983. When I retired, I came back to the Philippines on Easter Sunday of 1983 and I’ve never left this country for any reason. Even with deaths in my family, I didn’t leave. If this pandemic had happened during my time out of this country, I would probably have died. I survived a stroke in 1998. Luckily it was here in the Philippines. I was treated like a King by the hospital staff. And this showed me, I had made the right decision, when I chose the Philippines to live my life out. I'm now 77 years young and with a beautiful Filipina as my wife, I am very. very happy!

@@craigsmith2755 So sorry to hear about that. People all over the world, including the US, have people dying from cancer. If your lady didn't do regular check-ups, that is not the fault of the Philippines' health system.

Great interview, Miss Pea. Your guest echoed many of the facts that I have encountered since I’ve been to both countries. Thai women are beautiful but they don’t hold a candle to a Filipina. Yes, there are many things in the Philippines that are problematic but it’s all part of the Filipino culture. When you live in the Philippines you have to adapt and many Western guys are unwilling to do that. I absolutely love the Philippines and the Filipino people. I have never had any problems in all the times I have been there. In fact, I have my Filipino friends here in New Jersey helping me find a place to live, helping me find musicians to play with (I’m a drummer) as well helping me get situated when I come this summer. My friends and their families have told me I’m considered family as well and not to worry because they will take care of me. Now tell me, would you find that in Thailand? Or anywhere else? To me, there in no comparison. The Philippines wins hands down. It’s been my dream since I first visited the Philippines in 1994 to live there. If you have the right mindset you’ll succeed. If you don’t, the Philippines aren’t for you.

Philippines is definitely the better country over all...and with a fair amount of experience, I can say with authority, that if the Filipino culture ever makes the collective decision to eradicate corruption, taking opportunistic advantage of each other and focus on working together as a whole country family...the Philippines would be absolutely unstoppable! You have an amazing base to work with, tough and hardworking men, adaptive, ingenious women...if ever the populace as a whole, government definitely included, ever decided that good enough was not good enough, if kindness and cooperation became the normal mode for living...my goodness...what a dynamo of a nation you would have. It would DOMINATE the pacific and be a strong voice for good and stable governance... I dearly hope I live long enough to see this eventuate. Besides corruption, the biggest issue against the people of the, Philippines is the, Catholic church. It has retarded their progress and it has made families indebted for generations (making a culture that 'forces' children to take care of their parents just makes a continuous cycle every generation) and because of the teachings...there are so many single mothers in the Philippines (or separated) it is truly sad. At first it was the "Land of Smiles" but after a while I discovered that was only surface level. Under the friendly facade there is often a dislike of foreigners. Also, there is frequent violence between locals. Every week there is a report of murder in the locals in many communities, more in the larger cities. Probably petty theft coz if it involves homicide or physical injuries , the thieves would face d wrath of d authorities . I remember around early 90s crimes were rampant including homicides. Most of d victims were foreigners , from Singapore as they made up d bulk of investors der @medium scale or large investments. Snatching , robbery resulting in physical injuries . D authorities acted swiftly arrested all those known crooks/snatchers and within days charged and sentenced to.. ☠️ As a result drastic drop (hardly )in crimes or violence. Since then I have visited numerous times and was amazed how peaceful ,violence is alien now🙏🙏.I had numerous experiences of shooting incidents right next to me in Thailand . Same with Philippines . I even had a Colt . 45 pointed on my temple and back twice (different business blokes) but I as cool not panicky . Thank God .having experienced that I still love d Philippines as my no 1 destination , Thailand 2nd .life is beautiful in Thailand coz I can converse in Thai but Philippines is more beautiful 😜.Never let those few despicable acts by locals deter u to settle in ur country of choice . What matters ur ultimate happiness /freedom . Life has more blessings than disasters /or bleak moments .Wish all of u guys a bless journey in ur respective journey ..God bless🙏🙏🙏

Having lived in both Thailand and Philippines for 35 years speak thai and also illongo both are beautiful countries.Thailand is better for hospitality hands down but the Thais have a dark nature simmering below the surface and are very money orientated and wouldnt think twice about scamming farangs. Philippines is more violent considering alot of the Male population is employed as armed security guards with little or no firearm training. Philippine family values are more engrained in their make up and culture. As a yacht owner currently moored in Tambobo bay the Philippines has more beautiful islands although the yachting industry is in its infancy its archipelago is more interesting to explore although passage planning and weather play an important consideration when cruising. For me it's the Philippines that is easier place to live and communicate and May I say the women like Pea are more beautiful and honest than Thailand. Nice video and well presented thank you Pea.

Many people never take into consideration that Thailand was not colonized by a western country. Hence the larger degree of cultural separation between Thai women and Western men. Although Thailand is a beautiful country and a very good place to vacation, when the vacation ends, you should make the Philippines your final destination. Also, Pea I love the outfit.

Hey Pea. Another great interview. One thing I notice as a guy here in the Philippines researching how to stay here (not at retirement age just yet) and I know this is a matter of opinion, but the majority of the negatives Steve said were fairly trivial. My reason for wanting to come here to be with my wife and daughter is because of the values that are still in the Philippines. Respect for older people for example. Also, I've seen filipinas who have moved to the UK and they have adopted the less attractive western attitude and forgotten their Pinoy roots and cultural qualities that, for me at least, made them attractive in the first place. Also, teenage westernised Pinoys that may have been born in the UK adopt the privileged, think the world owes them something attitude and I've seen it when they've literally been shouting at their parents in public with no respect at all I know this isn't all and is a generalisation but I see it often and it upsets me they have either lost or never knew of their Pinoy culture and the great things about it. One last point, if you're a westerner and you want to live a lifestyle closer to back how then I should imagine Thailand would win because it has catered for foreign tourists for much longer. The Philippines in contrast has only within the last 10 -15 years become a main tourist destination with the "Ints more fun in the Philippines" tourism campaign and so the infrastructure that foreigners want has steadily been growing.
@OneJuanWon
@OneJuanWon 2 жыл бұрын
Steve's insight is great to hear, thank you for sharing his experiences with us. I've done some research on this topic and he validated a lot of things that I've learned. I like his idea of making the Philippines as the home base and then venturing to neighboring countries when possible (or as needed). His feedback about the differences in healthcare services is something to consider, especially if at retirement age and there's a need for affordable, high quality medical services. Thailand looks very inviting but the language barrier and the 'farang effect' would make fitting more challenging for a Westerner. The Philippines is definitely easier to settle in and the locals are more welcoming.
@johndoh5182
@johndoh5182 2 жыл бұрын
I'm married to a Filipina so I have no choice but to make PH a home base. But we're out in small town/rural PH not on one of the main islands. From the PH, you have Taiwan, Japan, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, New Zealand, Australia and a handful of other places where none of these places are more than a 5 hr. flight, and most are under 3 hours. So yeah, if that's the part of the world you want to see, then the PH makes a pretty good home base.
@Godstud
@Godstud 2 жыл бұрын
It can be challenging, with the language barrier, but the "farang effect" is mostly a misconception and misunderstanding. Settle in an area that is NOT a resort, in Thailand, and you'll encounter amazing hospitality. That Thais working in resort areas are a bit jaded, is probably true. They see the worst of the foreigner tourists, daily.

I really like Thailand as a fun destination for great food and beautiful women but when it comes to the long term experience I don’t think the Philippines can be beat. As far as beautiful women I don’t see much difference. Different features but beautiful. The difference I think is inner beauty. Filipinas are more loyal to their man. Hi Miss Pea. This is a good topic. I follow vloggers from Thailand and the Philippines. I have chosen the Philippines for many reasons and one being the visa issues. There are better visa choices in the Philippines that don't tie up a lot of your money and don't require you to have so much in a bank account at all times. Both places are very beautiful and I will visit Thailand but will live in the Philippines. As to having to go to many places and different people to get one thing done I believe that would be called a make work project haha. You have to go to 5 people to get one thing done so 5 people get paid to help you. Mind you each one only gets a small pay where if you could get one person to do what you need you get it done faster and that 1 person would have a bigger pay. A lot of good points made. Love your skit at the end too funny. BTW you were looking awesome in that dress. Keep smiling and stay safe

Steve makes some really good points that I think are new to your channel Pea, like for instance the tax treaties between the Philippines and the US (and UK) are very strong and work to minimize the tax burden, especially for Filipinos and expats who take advantage of social media platforms for income. But I also must agree with Steve about Thai food, it is renown world-wide. BTW Pea, outstanding out-take on Gilligan's Island, how did you know Mary Ann was the universal fav of the 2 young female castaways?

This is a great interview. I lived in Thailand for 4 years, Indonesia for years, and the Phils for 7 years. Phils have the worst when it comes to food, internet, corruption, rental prices of condos and motorbikes/cars. But for long time living, it is the better. Relation wise, having christian and american culture with English language and liberal visa politics, make the Philippines the winner!

I watch Pea and some of the other Philippine bloggers because I like hearing about the expat experience and Asian cultural issues. Interestingly, for me, it is the Christian and Americanized culture in the Philippines that is a major turn-off for me. I am much more comfortable living in Thailand.

OK . . . I'm an American, married and 5 years in Thailand. The usual differences came up in this interview. Thailand wins in food, infrastructure, health care, and let's also add in that Thailand has divorce. The Philippines wins in Immigration and, very importantly, in English language. The biggest flaw in the interview is that it appears your guest is judging Thai woman by internet stories and time in Pattaya and then comparing to women in Dumaguete. That would be similar to comparing women in Angeles City to women in Dumaguete. Nice of you Pea not to mention the several videos you have done on scammers in the Philippines. In the rest of Thailand, outside Pattaya, Thais are, I think, very similar to Filipinos. I think your guest needs more time to experience and think about and adjust to SE Asian family culture. Also, he comes from the UK which has an extensive welfare system. He should rethink family economics in a country with almost no welfare support. The family members are all you have to depend on. OK, the west is more efficient. In some ways that is why we left the west, to slow down and live a more relaxing lifestyle.

I came across this channel and he's right, it's the best in learning what I'm getting into and how to treat her. LOVE THIS CREATOR AND HOW SHE DOES LEARNING THE PROS AND CONS...
