The Phillips Drive - Types of Screw Drive Styles | Fasteners 101

The most common and well-known screw drive, the Phillips drive is practically everywhere. The Phillips drive is the most widely used screw drive, especially in assembly lines. Even more so than the Square drive! This brief informational video will cover how the Phillips drive is used, what to look for in bits and screwdrivers for the drive, and a known issue with this drive, more than any other, that can make it difficult to work with sometimes: cam out, otherwise known as screw slippage.

You can see in the video the bit jumping in the fastener. The Phillips system is one of the worse trim styles in common use and it persists in the same way that the Fahrenheit temperature scale does, because Americans do not demand something better but prefer to stick with what is familiar and common. If Robertson had not been so stubbornly proprietary about his square drive, the Phillips would likely never have been invented, or at least would not have gained the foothold that it needed to become the dominant curse on American workers when it comes to everyday fasteners. With options like Torx, Robertson, and even square drive (which is common in the US but not really the same as Robertson), we should do the same to Phillips as it in turn did to the slotted head--namely relegate it to the dust bin of history. Stop buying 'em, and they'll stop making 'em.
