I feel like you missed an opportunity with Mr. Peanutbutter. His message to Diane when she was about to go off on her philanthropic journey sounded suspiciously close to Cosmic Nihilism. He said “ The universe is a cruel, uncaring void. The key to being happy isn't a search for meaning. It's to just keep yourself busy with unimportant nonsense, and eventually, you'll be dead.” Mr Peanutbutter has ultimately gone further beyond caring about the meaninglessness of existence, and rather than grasp for some legacy like Bojack does, he just does whatever he feels like.

I would actually say the opposite, the Meseeks are more alike to religious zealots(or just very devout people). They exist for a singular purpose (or at lease believe they do) for which they are created, much like a religious zealot who believes they where created for a purpose and have meaning. They find pain in existence due to the fact that it means their purpose is not complete, and upon completing their purpose are completely fine with ceasing to exist. Alike to a religious soldier(eg Crusader) who is completely willing to die if they believe it is their purpose(eg suicide bombers).

Just a clarification: Nietzsche was what he called an active nihilist: someone who destroys all previously held values, morals and beliefs and creates their own; someone who awknoledges the tragedy that is life, but love it regardless, and most of all, live it. Now, what he warned against was what he called passive nihilism: someone who awknoledges the baselessness of all morals, values and beliefs, as well as the tragic nature of life (and its meaninglessness), but stops there, and more or less lives day by day, waiting to die, with no goals, passions, or dreams to speak of.

That is also the reason why he doesn't want to admit it, since he is 'forced' to have those feelings, even though he knows where they come from, which obviously pisses him off.

Interesting. I would define myself as an optimist cosmic nihilist. There is no reason not to try feeling good so let's do our best to be happy. Even if it's an illusion or a chemical reaction, what value is there in not living in an illusion if that "not illusion" sucks. Truth only matters when not knowing it lead us to detrimental choices, but when truth itself is a bad choice, why care about it? And why not be altruistic while we are there too? There might be no reason to be, sure, but there is no reason to be a jerk either. So to sum up : "Nothing matters but hey let's have fun while we are there."

So, basically Epicureanism or hedonism (meant strictly as a non-judgmental descriptor) would be where you've parked your philosophical car, depending on how you judge feeling good. Epicureanism focuses more on elimination of pain and fear and the the promotion of feeling good and secure (ie; feeling good in the long game), vs. hedonism that passes no judgement on the time value of good feelings (feel good now, or next week, or 50 years from now, whatever feels good). Regardless of which makes sense to you, the good news is that the answer will feel good and, by definition of the view you've chosen, you will effectively be "right," or at least self-consistent. See, the thing I think this needs to touch on about Rick is that he's explicitly a bad example of how to be a cosmic nihilist. He recognizes that the universe is pointless, and misinterprets that that to mean that the universe is evil. Love is fake, therefore it can't feel good. Rick seeks to justify his own suffering by saying that nothing is justified. Which makes him an interesting character, but not actually a good example of where to go with one's nihilism.
@Pieherto6 жыл бұрын
Why should Rick believe the universe is evil? I think he sees it as neither good or evil
@potato55906 жыл бұрын
I disagree. First of all, he never explicitly states that the universe is evil nor does he ever say that [(edit:) he thinks] it is evil. He said that it can be cruel and unfair, but even that doesn't mean that it is evil. Nothing is either good or evil, as the universe is too complicated to be one. Also, evil isn't the opposite of good. Secondly, he doesn't say that love can't feel good, it is just that he definitely thinks it is an illusion and he would feel foolish and weak to believe that it is true. Also, he doesn't need to justify his suffering as we all know he is, so why bother, right? Additionally, he ALSO never said NOTHING is justified, he just doesn't act on ideas that CANNOT be justified. So, I think he is a great example still. Thanks for the chat, I needed something to waste time.

You mention the Mr. Peanutbutter seems fine, but I don't think that's true at all. We see the cracks beyond his happy-go-lucky character in his strained relationship with his wife and the episode where him and bojack visit his brother and they get all "I'm just waiting to die" on us. It shows that his fun-loving front is just that, a front to a scared and broken interior.
@han0906 жыл бұрын
I don't think it's a front for a broken interior. I think he definitely can be sad, and depressed (we see him struggle with this around the death of his brother). But he ultimately comes out the other side of it quite quickly, cheerfully telling bojack that "nothing matters". Because happiness and meaning aren't about having everything be perfect all the time, and never being sad. Mr Peanut is the best adjusted of all of them (if only from an emotional standpoint), because he can perfectly embody the "keep living forward" philosophy, while others only state it.

Yeah we know he plays dumb (like not calling out bojack for who knows how long about kissing dianne, until hes pushed. His breakdown when bojack rejects him after bojack also pretends to be happy. And of course whenhe gets all depressively nihilistic when his brother was possibly dying.) Basically he hides a lot of his inner self with a persona desperate to make people like him. In season 4 he even admitted he only ran for governor because he wanted people to like him and didn't like the thought that maybe hes not well loved enough. It also explains why he's so desperate to be bojacks friend. Because bojack doesn't like him and he is compelled to change that. Not unlike pinkie pie actually. There was an entire episode about a donkey not wanting to be her friend, and she went to some pretty extreme measures to make him like her. Its beyond a healthy level of "of course people want to be liked" and into compulsion. Possibly personality disorder territory. If I had to guess I would say bojack is straight up borderline personality disorder (as in he has every symptom on display, some more pronounced than others) probably with narcissistic personality disorder traits underlying it. and mr peanutbutter has histrionic personality disorder. I have bpd so I'm quite familiar with it. (Also npd traits and with many friends with either). Hpd I know much less about. But I know core aspects are hiding behind a fake persona, expressing how you think others want you to be, coming across as fake usually, overly dramatic, and impulsive needs to engage in big attention grabbing gestures to impress others or make you the center of attention. And with all personality disorders they tend to cause problems with yourself, your work, and your relationships. His third marriage is falling apart literally because of his need for the spotlight, his running for governor, and his repeated over the top gestures even after being confronted with that they're for him, and not liked by the person receiving them. Bojack rejects him for being too bubbly and insincere seeming. And ultimately he lost a lot of his popularity after impulsive decisions that he thought would make people love him. Such as deciding people can eat whatever they want when trapped underground. He's not perfectly well adjusted, he just doesn't really express because he's terrified of the rejection that might cause.
@user-ip3mm6pr7o6 жыл бұрын
han090 I already mentioned I have bpd. But to be precise I have quiet bpd. Standard bpd tends to cause lashing out. You yell at others or have other outbursts, openly admit suicidal feelings especially when rejected or abandoned. You sabotage those around you so they can't leave you. Or conversely you cut out relationships even that are going well so they can't reject you first. It's typically easy to see and not that hard to diagnose if you're familiar with the person and the condition. Though it can often be mistaken for bipolar disorder or other cluster b personality disorders. Quiet bpd however implodes rather than explodes. You rarely express yourself openly. You self harm, abuse substances or engage in risks, but without others knowing. You might withdraw but also act like everything is fine. It's not super unlike hpd, and in fact mr peanutbutter may have quiet bpd instead. There just isn't enough evidence to point to it. The issue is, because people almost never see the full range of symptoms its far easier to just decide is anxiety or depression and downplay the intense inner struggle. Personality disorders tend to be developed by abusive or turbulent childhood. My mom had bpd..classic bpd. It was violent, with a lot of yelling and put downs. She would say that I could talk to her about anything, but as my mental issues started developing and I tried she acted insulted, life I was directly saying she's terrible, and would threaten suicide. And even before that any time I had an issue, a fear, pain, sadness, I was yelled at to keep quiet, Loire about it and not "air dirty laundry" (like that time I was 16 and a neighbor raped me and when another neighbor asked if he was good I said no and my mom said she didn't want conflict with the neighbors and to shut up about it). Like yeah that imposed non expression and chronically bad condition I know is exactly why I have quiet bpd. So I think its highly unfair to say hes super well adjusted just because he smiles a lot and doesn't often express his negativity. It's, imo, a really shallow way to look at people. I mean come on even robin williams is a classic example of the happy well adjusted nice to everyone fun loving comedian type who was so depressed he killed himself. Portraying outwardly traits that make others think you're well adjusted doesn't mean that's accurate. I mean until season 4 it could be argued that princess carolyn was most well adjusted. She worked hard, did her best, helped everyone around her and when needed would stand up for herself when she felt taken advantage of. She had ups and downs but always went with it even when sad, hurt, or angry. But holding up that image of independent strength is stressful and it basically destroyed her and most of her season 4 relationships. If bojack wasn't actually improving his issues so well, it would have destroyed her completely when she told him that she forged his signature. Outward functionality doesn't really tell the whole story. And anyone can snap. I'd argue todd is the best adjusted main cast honestly. But I also feel like they don't explore enough personal with him for that to be the case for sure. Who knows what demons he has. Maybe no one is well adjusted. Hollyhock isn't, but she feels like she can't admit to any struggles or it's betraying her dads. So even when looking for her mom she can't admit she wants one. She can just barely admit to having a self loathing inner voice, but even that is just really hoping it'll pass.

I tend to think along the absurdist line of thought that there is no inherent meaning and our irreconcilable desire for meaning makes life both tragic and ultimately worth living. If nothing has intrinsic worth and it's all based on one's perception, then you have the freedom to ascribe worth to whatever you so choose. Ultimately I do think this is still a coping mechanism, but I enjoy entertaining the illusion at times for sanity's sake.

Unhelpful Revelations I think this is supposed to happen. In TV shows there is always that redemption arc, to show us that no matter how evil you are, you can still be forgiven and live a normal/ happy/good life. But that’s just fiction, people relapse into bad habits, turn back to the old, comfortable ways (just like drug addicts). Take Princess Caroline (and her career girl speech) she knows that being close to Bojack is toxic and actively tries to distance herself. But old habbits die hard. Just like Bojack, Sarah Lyn and the rest. Sometimes it’s not enough to just try and the bad way is just so much easier. (Sorry for my English)

To think that love should be dismissed is ignoring the human need to categorize. Love isn't folk-psychology, it is the name that we as humans have given to the feeling we experience when the chemical reaction in our brains occurs. All emotions are chemical reactions, but they are still real--they are names given to specific chemical reactions, each of which has a vastly different effect.
@JohnSmith-gp5lu7 жыл бұрын
I think you're missing the point. To my mind, Cosmic Nihilists are apt to argue that the traditional, transcendental notion of love is invalidated by its nature as a chemical phenomenon, and that therefore, it should be relegated to the same moral space that our basest, most animal needs (i.e shelter, food, sex) occupy. Nihilists don't deny that love is real or dismiss it--in fact, the reality that love is purely physical is integral to their worldview. Rather, they argue that modern man cannot stably validate his existence with the pursuit of love anymore so that he can with food or sex, hence the prevalence of hedonism amongst Cosmic Nihilists.
@icarus6757 жыл бұрын
The Churchlands, cited as support for the cosmic nihilist thesis, go as far as to deny the existence of beliefs, feelings or desire though. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Churchland#Philosophical_views Indeed, their views are deeply problematic and should not be understood as necessary for cosmic nihilism (or cognitive-centered philosophy of mind btw)

Nothing is true. Everything is permited. To say that nothing is true, is to realize that the foundations of society are fragile, and that we must be the shepherds of our own civilization. But humans aren't separate from the universe. We are the universe. We're literally made up of bits of the universe. When we give something meaning, we are literally the universe giving things meaning. We don't need cosmic validation. We are the cosmos giving validation.

If we are the universe, then the understanding that nothing matters applies to our everyday lives. It's just an endless cycle of life being everything and nothing.
@blehhblehh24776 жыл бұрын
Its fake and pointless only when its given a deeper meaning, I think is what they're trying to say. Of course you can enjoy love and emotions and feelings - it is part of what makes us human. But you should always leave it at that. Don't make it where the world and the indifferent universe around you revolve around. Don't make it the point of living - the answer to everything. Which is what most people actually do, either consciously or not. Also, when it's nihilism we're talking about, you don't have to agree with everything the philosophy stands for - go live your life to the fullest with no regrets. But you can't also deny that there's some uncomfortable truths it presents, which eventually you'll have to face and accept, like the thing with love.

"We're literally made up of bits of the universe. When we give something meaning, we are literally the universe giving things meaning." Accurately speaking, we are then the universe giving itself meaning. Go back to the ~13 minute mark where Metzinger says "...you...are systems that simulate and emulate themselves for themselves..." Love and other emotions have no more meaning than a soda bottle exploding on a hot day. It's simply something that follows the basic physical laws of our universe. It is impermanent and impactless, therefore meaningless. It can be meaningful to you, but "you" (as in the self) are an illusion, therefore it is "fake". "Love" is nothing more than how we interpret the processes in our brain that compel us to breed (or in the case of familial love, to remain part of a pack/tribe for safety and survival). That is a far cry from the ideas of destiny and soul bonding and lifelong need for the object of your love that makes up our definitions of "love". "Understanding the mechanics of something does not mean it has no meaning." Corollary: Not understanding the mechanics of something does not mean that it has meaning. So understand it as much or as little as you want, and give it as much or as little meaning as you want. It doesn't matter. We're all going to die, the universe will end, and nothing of either will remain to tell the story. Make what you will out of the time that you have.

Feels kinda bad that every philosophical idea I had by myself has also been had by someone else hundreds of years ago, and, apparently, been turned into cartoons.

That sentiment is also a philosophical idea that has been around for centuries. You’re welcome.

I relate to Rick a lot. Not his smarts, ingenuity, or views… It’s the alcoholism 😂

"Except Mr Peanut Butter, he seems fine" I mean he literally said there was no meaning in life. I think Mr PB is a personification of nihilism, for him life has no meaning, but because of that, he doesn't worry about life and does thing that amuse him.

Peanut-Butter was never fine, he just puts on a big happy fast. But with how many times he has been married it is fair to say he is deeply afraid to be alone maybe to even the point where if he was he thinks he will disappear. And by that it is fair to say that is the reason he wants to stay in the limelight and also will do what people tell them even if it doesn't make sense. Though that also might be since he isn't very bright.

Watching videos about nihilism really makes me forget that I'm trying to ignore my nihilistic tendencies.
