Hi Faizal, it's great that you started this concept, you described Gruyaert's work very well. If I had to add a small criticism, you should push a bit less your colorgrading on shots where you turn the pages. It skews our vision of the photo a little, and there is red in the shadows. Some love from France ;)

Thank you Faizal for turning my scope to a photographer that I've missed and what a great one as well. His work really struck a nerve. I got to get a chance to see these photos in print. Of the photos you shown, many of them are so dense I'd need a longer study of them to really figure out how he shoots. Interesting how you can create such beautiful stillness and balance in an often time very chaotic scene. Love that! Very well scripted start of this series of yours. Kudos for putting in such a massive amount of work to enlighten us. Thank you. /Robert

I'm old enough to have worked with Kodachrome for a long time, and forty years ago we already considered Gruyaert a master of this film, like Jim McCurry and some others. As he is Belgian, his images were often published in French photographic magazines. Nowadays, he works a lot on his past work. As he said a few months ago in an interview with a journalist from France Culture, the possibilities of processing and printing were poor before digital. The only paper he found suitable was Cibachrome. Digital post-production and inkjet printing seem to him a great opportunity to get the best out of his images. At 81 years old, this man avoids the trap of purism and wants to get the best of both technologies, film and digital. Beyond this technical point, Gruyaert is a poet of color, as was Saul Leiter. Thank you for this video that pays tribute to him.

Me too. Miss it terribly. Back then we used to re-duplicate slides again and again to build contrast and/or saturation sometimes using different colour temperature lights or gells to manipulate colour. Like Pete Turner or Jay Maisel. I had quite a few Cibachromes made but they weren’t up to modern inkjet or LASER / LED (on halide paper) prints, or the Dye Sublimation ones wealthier (!) photographers could use for exhibitions. As far as I know the one remaining real master of Cibachrome (and Digital Dye Transfer) is Charles Cramer. But others may be out there..?

Brilliant video and analysis. What is incredible is that you have done a video about my favourite street photographer and somehow one of lifes great coincidences has occurred. At 6mins13seconds to the left of the photographer there is a bald gentleman who is Mick Lynch, the head of the RMT trade union who happens to be one of my favourite human beings. Random I know but you have made my day by somehow including two of the most disparately connected people in your video. Thank you :)

Beautiful - Thank you! Just love the look of Kodachrome (and probably some beautiful dye transfer prints!). Those reds. I am told that Kodak Vision 3 200T (such as that sold spooled for 35mm by Silbersaltz in Germany) has quite popped reds. Has anyone tried it? I guess another option might be Ektachrome for popped reds.

Can you comment on where Harry and HCB and Eggleston might have crossed paths, becausethis is they first time I hear about him. HCB didnt want to be 'labeled' a photo journalist" either. And Eggleston paved the way for just doing his thing and color as well. HCB was against color, so interesting about Harry joining Magnum in 84. Hcb was prolly out of the picture by then. No pun.

What's even more insane is that his early color work was done on slide film with a rangefinder. And HCB asked him to add/aid in color to his own work. Even more complex...HG photographed his family and personal life only in black and white. Truly a master. 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

This is an excellent video, Faizal. I've been a big fan of your channel for a while but I particularly enjoy the videos you produce which places the art form as the focus rather than the gear. KZbin is awash with street photography videos that are basically adverts, it must be hard to avoid that when tagging a hyped camera will get you a lot of views but I think this content is a lot more engaging and educational. I came across your videos when I was looking to get into street photography and trying to figure out what camera to buy but have stuck around for your tips with shooting (your recent video on the use of foreground for example) and your beautiful work. I think your photography has come on a lot in the last few years, I live and work in London near where a lot of your recent work was shot and my partner is from Lisbon, the way you documented both cities shows a photographer that's becoming more confident, it's clear you are building up a coherent body of work with its own distinctive style, something that's harder and harder in the digital age. I know online spaces encourage slightly weird parasocial relationships but I can't help but notice you've had a hard year, please stick at it, your work is getting better and better and I hope next year will bring you more happiness. Happy new year!

Maybe is we, the viewer who makes it interesting? Our pre conceived notions etc. Ican look at one thousand Peter McKinnon photos, or anyone who uses tone curve to make their blacks look "Cinematic", and simply feel nothing. Now I look at one Devin Allen, Alessandra Sanguinetti or Gueorgui Pinkhassov photo and be just amazed.

It's sad to see such a young and talented artist like yourself falling for the lies of nihilism. Relativism is self-defeating: "there's no objective reality" is itself an objective statement. We all see reality from a different perspective, but that doesn't mean there's no objective truth. Please take the time to investigate these issues further and don't be entrapped by the musings of lost men.
