When we visited Stirling, the archivist there said that the standing stone in the field north of the Wallace monument marked the place where the Picts and Gaels were united in marriage, to seal their alliance. I have no reason to doubt this. You could see that farmers had been plowing around this stone for centuries..
@3ch1dna077 ай бұрын
You are likely correct. I'm quite certain that some stones have stories about their significance handed down via word of mouth. So only those born and raised where a stone is prominently displayed would know the specific use for that stone. Just a thought.

The Picts are just northern Celts who did not get conquered by the Romans. The Romans called all Britons who they had not been romanised Picti. There is no mystery, just some misunderstanding with the name.
@jasonladd64009 ай бұрын
The Picts had mastery of forest covered hills and glens that made it very hard for the Romans to conquer in any meaningful way. They were vulnerable to hit and run guerrilla tactics just like the English during the wars of Independence. The Picts were certainly fierce and indomitable but no match for the legions in open battle but could easily escape into the wilds so no complete victory was ever achievable
@Azog1504 ай бұрын
There's also the fact that the Picts had no towns or cities. The Roman's standard procedure when conquering somewhere was to go straight for the centres of power, and then use that as their base of operations. So the fact the Picts had no real centres of power left the Roman's confused and unsure what to do (and probaby left them thinking the Picts were even more primitive than the Britons they had conquered further south). That + hit and run guerrilla tactics made them think it wasn't worth it.

@Corc-Duibhne10 ай бұрын
Ireland was called Éire by its inhabitants, and Hibernia in Latin, both long before the 6th century. The word Scotia was an alternative Latin name for Ireland and also for Scotland in the medieval period. In that era it referred to country of the Gaels. The word Scoti or Scot originally referred to the Gaelic people, who originated in Ireland, and later spread into Scotland. The word Scot would later become associated solely with Scotland, but the Gaels never disappeared from Ireland and are ancestors of the modern Irish population, as well as Scottish and Manx.

The Romans were not afraid of the Picts, the Picts were simply able to retreat to the mountains and couldnt readily be defeated. Since Scotland didnt have anythibg of obvious value to the Romans, it was easier to simply keep them out. Generally, the walls did that job for hundreds of years. Wales had key metal ores and England had good quality farmland, so they did not escape Roman attention so readily.

I can't believe people actually believe the Battle of Mons Graupius even happened. 15-30,000 Calodonian men. I doubt there was even 80,000 Calodonians total then so getting 30k men is a heavy achievement, especially considering that the Scots struggled to muster that 1,050 years later with a population of 300k. If what tacticus (the only claim that it even took place because even after nearly 2,000 years with the battlefield still not been even found even though 10,000-20,000 men died there reportedly)

I do believe they are over exaggerated a bit. The romans did conquer Scotland/ Caledonia but they only conquered what was worth conquering and even then it wasn’t much. That’s why they withdrew because it was too expensive to garrison the region manning the Antonine wall and the coastal settlements that I believe might have reached as far as Aberdeen. Yeah the Picts give them a hard time but so did the Germanic and Slavic tribes and the eastern empires like Parthia. If Rome wanted to subdue to the Picts they were perfectly capable. They held Iberia which was a much more difficult region to take with its terrain which is a lot more challenging then Scotland.
@ravinraven6913 Жыл бұрын
not saying the pics weren't interesting. But scaring the Romans wasn't very hard. If you had a legion or 5 show up on your door step. You probably scared the Romans. The Romans were even scared by a bunch of slaves with very little equipment. So scared they sent...2..3..4? Legions that all got their bum handed to them. But not everyone scared them enough to build a wall or two. That should be the main focus on the title. Otherwise the Picts were just like any other Roman enemy at the end of the empire.
@Cobalt1520 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, sure, they were so scared they conquered pratically all Europe and all Mediterranean shores. The wall was built because honestly it was not worth it to invade Northern England, nothing really valuable there that would justify the sacrifice, so they built a wall to keep the picts in the North.
