@@thomasswafford250 When I was in college, I worked with a guy like that. You could tell who'd reached their 20th birthday, because anyone older than that could see right through him. The younger ones practically worshipped him, a man in his 30s who was just a nogoodnik although I don't think he would have killed anyone.

Three big parenting mistakes: 1. keeping Charles’s adoption secret from him 2. over-indulgence (i.e. spoiling) of the kid 3. refusing to accept their son’s guilt even once it was proven. By treating him that way, they became his enablers.

The adoptive Parents of Charles Schmid were complete Buffons & Retards! In Wiki it's mentioned, _"After Schmid's trial and conviction, his adoptive mother and her second husband had owed her son's legal team more money than they possessed. As a result, they ended up living in near poverty._ " Shocking! Why did they spent so much for Charles defense in Court? He was a confirmed multi-Killer! And were they so ignorant of their own financial status and the expenses of Lawyers? That is why I said his adoptive parents were complete Retards!

I think for those that are the bio parents and want to stay anonymous, the new dna 🧬 services make that very difficult on both sides of the equation. Then again, if someone was young and changed their mind, it may give them the opportunity to meet their child. Either way, I agree with @Eileen Lester and think truth is always the best option.

I'm 66, and grew up in Tucson. Absolutely, I remember all this well. Years later....early - mid 1990's, a good bud of mine who had every reason to have this on absolute authority....told me that the bereaved father of the 2 Fritz girls actually arranged to have Charles Schmid killed in prison. I don't think anybody could blame him. I applaud the action. I only offer that now, because all the players involved are dead now....incl. my buddy. This was a sick, sordid affair all the way around. @@TheCrimeReel You are quite welcome. Say, in your vid you mention that the Fritz girls were murdered off of "Pontotoc Drive" Well, a person can still drive their car along Pontotoc Drive. I did so last year, just trying to envision where out in the desert there the murders actually took place. That area is still very "desert-y Tucson-like"...meaning that homes are spread apart....nice homes...with quite a bit of desert area between them. Do you know....in your info on this crime....can you offer me a more exact address or something that would allow me to pinpoint the murder site? I'd really like to visit the site and leave flowers and a prayer. That "buddy" of mine that told me of Dr. Fritz being the one who arranged the murder in prison of Schmidt....he went to school and knew both those girls really well. His dad was a heart surgeon as well as Dr. Fritz....and the families were close. My buddy has passed on too, as well as his Dad the heart surgeon, so I feel I maintained his trust on privacy as agreed during his lifetime. Flowers and prayers seem appropriate to me now. It happened half a century or more ago. But for us old time Tucsonans....it's still somewhat fresh.

@@TheCrimeReel I got to thinking that if you REALLY wish to get deeper into these fascinating "The Pied Piper of Tucson" murdersand the entire situation....(Charles Schmid), there is a very recent book out that I bought on Amazon I think it was (I'll give you the ISBN #). It's by Schmid's best buddy who finally ratted him out.....the guy was right alongside Schmid thru all of this from the get-go...Richard Bruns. He's titled his book "I...a Squealer". Man...it's GREAT....especially for old-timer Tucsonans like me (moved to Tucson in 1961 when I was 7....and Tucson was only about 300K pop. compared to the over a million it is now. We were small and a dusty cow-town back then. Anyhow....if interested....the ISBN # is 978-0-9831665-5-9. Another set of numbers follows the ISBN immediately on this book....51795. It's put out by "Twin Feather Publishing". Again....if you really wish the "real deal" on this from a true participant/insider.....get this book. It's only @ 140 pages in this paperback....and a quick read. God Bless joelinarizona

He first met Gretchen when he was casing her place to rob it. He knocked on the door with a bogus story, but the two had an attraction to each other. He told her about the killing to impress her, but then she held the information over his head. She in her own way was nutty as well. She knew he was a killer, but stayed with him and threatened him. In my opinion, Gretchen shares the guilt of her sister's death by her involvement with Schmid. Her father was a heart surgeon and had operated on a mobster's daughter. When the girls disappeared, he had Schmid picked up and questioned by mobsters. He had appreciated what Gretchen's father had done for his daughter. Schmid wanted to bury Gretchen and her sister's body later, but didn't bring the right tools. The ground was so hard, he couldn't dig into it. He tried to get Bruns to touch something on the body to leave his prints, but he refused. Bruns's girlfriend thought he had become obsessed with her because he was always hanging around watching her. As a result, begin hanging out around her house and it appeared he was an obsessed stalker. She didn't know he was trying to protect her from Schmid. The police became involved, and he was offered a chance to go out of state and live with relatives, or be prosecuted. When he was so worried about her and called the police and told them what happened, they believed him and got him to help with the case. When Schmid was arrested, the police had him take off his boots to see if he had anything hidden in them They were amazed how much stuff he had stuffed in them to increase his height. It's amazing he could get his feet into them. It had to be uncomfortable, but showed you how obsessed he was with his image. Richard Bruns wrote a book, but never published it. His daughter did years after he died. The book is entitled, I A Squealer because he was labeled a squealer for going to the authorities and even got death threats. He never reunited with the girl he was trying to protect. They would see each other at places, but each avoided the other. I suppose it was too uncomfortable for each. Once Bruns had gone to a city to look for a job. While sitting at a bus stop, a police car taking Schmid somewhere pulled up. Schmid didn't spot Buns, but Bruns saw him. It upset him so much he just went home. Joyce Carol Oates wrote a story based on the case entitled Where Are You Going, where have You Been. At least two movies, The Todd Killings, The Lost and Dead Beat are based on the case. Besides the a fore mentioned book, at least three other true crime books have been written about it. At one point, Schmid sent some of his poetry to a university professor. The professor said he read it for all the wrong reasons, but was surprised by how good it was. Here is a link to a podcast in which the host discusses the book I A Squealer with Bruns daughter who got it published. www.stitcher.com/show/true-murder/episode/i-a-squealerlisa-espich-54080733

@@colinresfinald219 well I can tell you that people like Smitty were known in teen circles. He was odd because he wore makeup. We had curious creatures in Phoenix too, but murder was not something teens feared. The article in Life/ Look, cannot remember which was complete with gruesome description of the murder. I’d love to answer questions if I can. I looked at that article over and over again. Moved to the Midwest and found a book on a book shelf of a family I baby sat for. Money and cars seemed to have a lot of influence in those days.

Kathy Morath...Used to come into the store that I worked at...and bought cigarettes. Richie Bruns has 2 twin daughters. Lisa worked at the same pharmacuetical retailer as I did. She was actually a manager. I would see her quite a bit, but I had no idea until she was promoting her father's diary of the case and his involvement with Schmid. The book is entitled "I a Squealer" by Richard Bruns...(highly recommended)I know the proximity of how close Bruns who lived on Winsett and Kathy Morath was living at the same residence as she did back then on Malvern...Smitty used to hang out at the Kon Tiki. My dad was a couple of years older than Smitty. He used to see him out on Speedway with a good sized group of teens milling around his car. A Charles Manson like cult following before Manson's.

Charles Schmid. This guy had a lot going for him. Adopted by an affluent couple and given all that affluence can provide. And because of this, and his good looks, he became the leader of the pack, a rebel without a cause, a bad boy and a murderer. His appeal among young people was hypnotic, almost Svengalic. He used it to his advantage. But, he messed up by telling people about his crimes because he believed that people would think it is cool. Charles Schmid was narcissistic and dangerous.

Up to the point where we were told that he was talented but wouldn't conform and couldn't be bothered at school, reminded me of me. There, the similarities end, I am pleased to announce. I can understand why he was attractive due to his looks, financial status, confidence, arrogance and patter. I understand his frustration with his birth mother not wanting to be involved, also his anger with the adoptive father being violent towards him. HOWEVER. Millions of people turn their lives around towards Kindness, this was a Monster. I feel so sorry for the loss of these young lives, for their families, and for his poor deluded adoptive mother. Can't help think, even though it's convolute and far fetched, But... What if he wasn't really dead. Maybe his knife wound wasn't fateful, maybe he recovered. A tinfoil hat moment says yep, 'they' wanted a healthy man's body to practice and develop good surgical skills. Or if he was dead, studying his brain might appeal to researchers. May his mum's supportive money wasn't all gone, remembering rich people often have a different perception of poverty. Although he could have made her get a loan to bribe a couple of prison guards and then a fake mortician shooed everyone away. Or the EMS crew etc were bribed. Yes I know none of these occurred(or are *extremely* unlikely) but still, didn't you say he escaped once? So the will was there, and his intelligence would have helped with a more permanent solution. Just suggesting a couple of possible (far fetched) theories. I enjoyed this one. As always, much appreciation and many thanks. Hope everyone has recovered from Thanksgiving feasting! Stay safe out there. Don't let anyone breathe on you. Edit-just realised the length of my essay, so if anyone has battled through to this part, thank you, and I apologise for it. It is a tendency of mine to over think, and as I'm mostly in bed due to health issues, there isn't a lot of connection with people, and little to no opportunity to test theories etc. See-i just over- explained my apology!

+Linda Ciccoli: I was born in Lincoln, and clearly....even at that young age....remember how Lincoln and truly ALL of Nebraska and close by states were terrified of Starkweather and his girlfriend while they were on the loose. I remember playing in the front yard of my grandma's home in Norfolk, Nebr. with my Mom....and a woman who we didn't know but was from this same little town drove by slowly and rolled down the window and yelled at us "Have they caught him YET??" I'm 66 now and remember that as a 5 or 6 yr. old SO CLEARLY it's like yesterday. Everyone was on FULL ALERT.....I can assure you that.

There was a book about him, although it's quite expensive on Amazon and long out of print. It was very good, and he was one scary dude.
