As a social worker and case manager, we often engage in what's called active listening. It's really a skill that is taught and learned and has to be practiced. What she's doing is called interruption and can often cause a convo to deteriorate. If she wants to agree or show that she's invested in the convo, she needs to learn active listening.

I used to be like that in high school. Half listening just to rebut. It’s a terrible thing to do to yourself. I learned to actively listen and take what the other person says to see if what I’m going to say back even matters. People are just not mature for their age and it’s gross. I know an 11 year old who’s more emotionally intelligent than most grown ups. It comes down to respect and controlling your emotions. If I’m mad about something that is no one else’s problem but mine

Honestly the recordings will benefit you as a man. She still might be crazy, but records, they're objective, they're not trying to twist things like your girl will be doing. Like you said, they didn't back up what she was claiming. I'm gonna guess that they backed what you were saying instead. Here's essentially why you benefit from them as a man : you don't hallucinate things during an argument, she does. Any recording will support you, because you live in reality, even if you get mad, and she lives not in reality but in her emotions. You're not trying to make her say things she didn't say, she's trying to do that. The record brings back what has been actually said. Personally, past text histories have saved my sanity when I was dating a crazy.

There is definitely a difference between active listening and interjecting, but it's a fine line. Listening to someone and nodding every so often, adding a "mm-hmm" or "yeah" now and again, adding some relavent/clarifying questions like "so this was in the office?" or "she said this to him?", etc. are good ways to show that you are actively invested in the conversation and what the person is talking about. However, adding commentary while someone is in the middle of making a point/statement or derailing the conversation to a slightly different topic when the person isn't done isn't active listening. At the end of the day, it really depends on who you're talking to and what the conversation is about. Sometimes it's good to stay as silent as possible if someone is talking about something personal or serious and other times it can be okay or welcome to add your own commentary when talking about something exciting or less serious. Good communicators can learn the difference and when to do either.

@user-ri5ex9xl9e
@user-ri5ex9xl9e 5 ай бұрын
@@autumnmusic22 I think everyone is an individual, but when you are a woman or a man you go through life that way and are raised in that context. So I'm not sure how much of the differences are due to something biological, or how much of it is that through centuries of having one set of expectations for one gender and another set for the other. Through how we're raised and how people around us teach us how to be when we are developing socially, different patterns of behavior emerge. I think that this is not a blanket statement for all men and women but if you take a sample size you'll see certain patterns emerge. Neither is inferior, and it's likely a survival mechanism in our species to have differences in the sexes. Any given person might have a mix of traits but when you look at the larger group you'll see patterns of thought processes emerge.

People have different communication styles. Some conversations are very dynamic and “interruptions” are common both ways, sometimes I’ll get in a state where the conversation bounces back and forth and zingers are gonna be dropped left and right, but the main point is we both feel heard, we both feel like we can “take the mic” to get a point across at any point. Some people don’t like being interrupted at all and prefer a more ordered structure. It’s all valid, but we gotta let the other person know. If we’re just finding reasons to be bitter, that’s a bigger issue than simple interruptions during conversations.
@dayit6260
@dayit6260 3 ай бұрын
That is how I feel! I have been blown up on for saying something as simple as "yeah, okay" to agree with someone in a what I thought was supposed to be a conversation, but it made them mad. They never before communicated that it was not okay to ever say "yeah, okay" in agreement or that it bothered them. I am a person who regularly does that in conversations with people to stay invested and show I am listening. So when I got yelled at about it, I am just baffled. Why could that not have been communicated before? He just held in his irritation that I did that until it festered? Weird. It could have been as simple as mentioning that it was a bother. Also, the person I had this issue with commonly spoke in the same manner when I was talking now that I think about it, which means he is a hypocrite. You can not ban someone from doing what you do when everyone involved is an adult. No one is anyone's child or anything like that. That makes it a control issue to me. It is even worse now that I remember conversations where he said "yeah" in agreement to me. Just a total hypocrite. I've written this a few times in response to people, and every single time I write it, it is no less true than when I first wrote it.

Again this is just a generalisation, everyone is different. I grew up in a family of 4, mom, dad, sister and myself(male). I’m the only one in the house that’s good at finding things/not losing them. I can’t keep track the amount of times I’ve found things for my mother and sister when they’ve been adamant that they’ve checked every area only for me to find it in less than 1 minute later, while my family members can count on one hand accumulatively how many times they’ve found something of mine that I couldn’t find myself. It’s not a gender specific thing, everyone has their own personality, quirks, good qualities and flaws.

Yeah men have a harder time communicating their feelings, not every man obviously, just on a general basis. Interrupting my husband just shuts him down so I actively try not to when we’re having a heated conversation. I also don’t assume what he’s going to say or how he feels about something just because I know him so well. Whenever we argue we sit at the kitchen table across from each other and hold hands. If I feel like I want to raise my voice, I don’t, I just say “I’m angry about that and want to yell, but I don’t want to do that” so we just pause. We also never swear at each other or call each other names whenever we’re in the thick of it. It’s all about controlling your emotions which is very difficult for me but I’ve gotten light years better at it since we developed this system of communicating. And we barely do this, it’s like maybe twice a year that we have those serious talks at the table. It’s also easier for my husband to write things down so sometimes he just grabs a notebook and we communicate like that. It sounds weird but it works for us

I don't think so. I think these type of women are the ones that can easily detach and move on if it disturbs their peace in more ways than one. That's kinda of the whole point of this advice, they don't want to deal with the same thing a lot of women endure when it comes to dating with men.

My husband and I have long conversations that usually go on for days (we're parents and don't want to have certain parts of discussions in front of the kids). We go back and forth like Aba was talking about. I thought that was normal. We come out of it understanding each other better and with a joint decision. He's better at communicating than me. It's not specific to women. It's about emotional intelligence. I've had higher ups, men and women, in corporate constantly talk over me and interject. I've dated men who do so. I've got women in my family who constantly do this. It comes from a place of either exerting dominance or importance. Either case, it's meant to make the other speaker feel small and unimportant. Learning to how listen, knowing when to speak and how to speak, is a skill. It may just so happen that most women you know haven't had a need to learn.

@@chocolatte522idk I think "excitement" is also a part of it. My girlfriends and I all talk like this depending on the *type* of conversation. If it's just a bs ideas conversation where we're more excited, we will all take turns jumping in. If we weren't finished with an important point, we will say as much. If it's more serious, we let the person speaking have the platform and won't speak up until they are done. The amount of time we intend to spend talking also seems to impact this. Usually in both cases, if we notice one group member hasn't had as much time to speak about their thoughts, we'll circle back to them and ask if they want to share anything.

Honestly I don't know how anyone came up with all this ish about body language or interpreting signals and crap. The best way to communicate with another person is just to ask them outright and be honest with each other. If you need clarification on something ask the person what they think or mean. If that isn't enough and you are still confused as to why their actions don't match what they said I feel like they are being deceptive and lying.

One thing that has helped me communicate with my husband is to give him more time to answer a question or provide input I’ve asked for. This sounds obvious, but I used to think when people are quiet for a few beats, they might feel awkward about the topic or something, so I’d try to say something warm or funny. Now I just let the man think, lol. If it’s a little too quiet a little too long, he just wasn’t listening or trying to dodge a chore I’ve asked him to pick up 😂 I’m laughing at him a little here, but he is a wonderful husband, and I am grateful for him

I also think such issues are massively undiagnosed (my dad struggled in school and childhood but didn't get diagnosed until adulthood after my sister was assessed). But for some reason that has been so extremely hard to do that its been going on for the last 2 years of our on and off relationship. That amongst other things has brought me to my breaking point, constant arguments over trivial things that shouldn't even be a problem in a normal functioning relationship between 2 adults. Interrupting is a skill. Yes, there is such a thing as 'good interruption' , and I've done it in every single job Interview I've had in my life, which all got me the job. This women, however, obviously LACKS that skill, because if you CAN interrupt correctly, the other person won't get mad. And no, its not the other persons fault for being mad. The definition of a good interruption is, that the person you interrupt appreciates it, so if they don't, you failed.

When some men say: "I like butter", and even when he's finished, heard, etc... you say: "True, I also like apples", the reply is "so you hate butter?! You're an apple supremacist??" It's absolutely mystifying. It's not even most men, but I also have found this trait *exclusively in* men. You have to be very careful how you agree with them, to the point you're best off ignoring them. They low-key expect disagreement and can't see the trees past the forest. Even when you do something like offer a real life example that agrees with their point, as a way of saying: "that's my experience as well", they just get really defensive.
