Kehu's last comment nailed it. We've got the talent. We just happen to be at the arse end of the world! And it's pretty hard to leave NZ and live somewhere else. We always get lured back. No place I'd rather live, truth be told:)

DK, Matt Groube, Jessy Praggot and james Reynolds ect and the backyard boys from Piha. Even being at the arse end of the world we still have plenty of people competing in the billabong pro and rip curl classics. I'm one of the backyard boys from Piha but im a skater not a surfer. The Sad thing was watching meth rip through all of these communities.

Brings back a lot of good memories. The cold, the people, the wildness of NZ. Started surfing there and never looked back. Less of the drink and more of the foam. 2017 since my working holiday and still uncrowded.

Wow great episode. Love seeing all the local legends and learning more about NZ surfing back in the days. Wish it was longer

A great story, it brings back memories! No disrespect though, it is easy to glorify the early days. I was surfing almost 10 years before 1973 and at quite a few of these spots and many more, a few years after I started. We knew exactly what caused the surf and could generally predict it quite accurately just using the isobar lines on the weather map from the National weather forecast. The whole KZbin clip makes a good story though, I guess that is the point.

Nice one RB. I lived in NZ for about 3years and I am hoping to go back at least one more time. This certainly brought back some nice memories.

I am in the engineering field for more than 30 years. But, I never forget a comment from one of my clients about 20 years ago, he said: "I heard you are a surf bum," I just didn't understand why he would say something liked that when I worked as hard as every engineer on the project.

Saw Graveyards (near Stent Rd from memory) in some of this footage, remember surfing perfect 5 ' graveyards by myself in the early 80's when I lived in New Plymouth for 2 years. Had some of the best waves of my life on the Taranaki Coast and surfed and skiied on the same day once. Mt Taranaki (Egmont) looked amazing in the background full of snow. A great little series this well done. Fark it was cold in winter time. Why isnt Paige still on the tour she was drilling those backhand re-entries.

As a teenager in the 70s surfing Maketu(MBR Forever) we were heavily influenced Bob Davies Taff Kennings and other crew from that Whanga pack,we had a batch at Otahu. Am 62 and still surf everyday here on the Sunny coast Queensland. I ride 9’ twinnys 8’ quads and whatever else I can come up with in my stupid head and Mark at Dessa PerigianSurf

Wouldn't recommend we're having a major youth crime wave. Shootings are becoming more prevalent, Child poverty is getting worse and our PM does nothing about it.

i find that its not crowded funny because i like crowds, where i surf, theres next to no one and i basically follow where the other surfers are, just cause i enjoy it more and having a long board coming towards me 😂
