Barely a minute in and my mind is trying to conjure pictures of the Turkish tapestries. I must clear my mind and start listening again. This is going to be good. One thing I'll say, Brad, you pick the most interesting bunny holes to make me go down!!! I love it all! Back to the story....

Great story! Love how you end the videos now…your own catch phrase. I think Captain Kidd got a raw deal

I'm glad you like that new ending. I agree about Captain Kidd. :)

Great story Brad! I never knew that much about Captain Kidd. Don't know if he got a raw deal or if someone rich just wanted somebody to pay for the theft of his property. Anyway keep them coming Brad.

I'm glad you enjoyed it. My opinion of Captain Kidd certainly changed after researching him. I'd love to write a book on him, but time just won't allow it. :)

Great story, Brad! In my opinion, Captain Kidd was, as we now say, "thrown under the bus". In my somewhat modest collection of seafaring stories, there is a book by Richard Zacks titled, "The Pirate Hunter: The True Story of Captain Kidd". It is extremely interesting. It quickly became one of those books that we find very hard to pause reading once getting started. Again, thanks Brad.

I'll definitely have to read that. Thank you for the suggestion. :)

From everything I know, Kidd got a raw deal. But there's a great deal more - the rest of the rest of the story. I recommend "Pirate Hunter" by Richard Zacks for a longer version of the story.

I need to check that out. Thanks for the suggestion. :)

@@BradDison I seem to have passed on my copy of Pirate Hunter, so I'm working from memory. But, as I recall, Kidd's letter of marque had a short expiration - a year or two. During that time, he had to procure the ship, outfit it, recruit a crew, and get to the Indian Ocean. By the time he found a ship he could attack, the letter had expired, but he must have counted on getting forgiveness if he was successful. As you recounted, he had become a "problem" for the British, and forgiveness was not to be found. Technically, he had violated the rules, but he was really set up for failure by the short duration of the letter of marque.

What is a gibit? 14:00
@BradDison8 ай бұрын
A gibbett is/was a gallows-type structure from which the dead or dying bodies of criminals were hanged on public display to deter other existing or potential criminals. I showed it in the picture on the left side of the screen at 14:00. :)
