Amazing video today showing the different styles of housing. I couldn't help notice that some of the older houses re-use and re-cycle most of the discarded building materials. My Russian wife is the same. Our old front door is now a side door to our garage for instance...she wouldn't let me chuck it out! 😁😁😁😁

Hi Sam, thanks again for another delightful tour of a Russian neighborhood. I love seeing the variety of house styles, from the very old to the ultra-new, along with the beautiful gardens some of them have. Where I live, it's the same; we also have different styles and ages. My house looks like it was transplanted from the U.K., built-in 1949 in British style by an Englishman who worked for the city. On one side, we have another one built in 1913 and the other side in the 1960s. Have a good one.

Wish they would be more concerned of their environment though . Massive heaps of junk just dumped anywhere and no one gives a damn about the area beyond their fence , at least mow the verge and use a weadeater . And the side roads are in a terrible condition - imagine what it would look like in winter. "No class difference " , yes that can be seen because who would build a house costing a couple of million between houses that are about to fall over and looks like a junkyard. No thank you Sam.

Like here in the USA it is pretty common to see very expansive houses right next to mobile homes.
I find it quite interesting how the houses are mostly different from each other. Here in California, my neighborhood has houses which all look the same, cookie-cutter houses as they call them. There are three or four variations, but even then, they are all similar. There are three-bedroom, four-bedroom, and two-story four-bedroom variants. How boring it is. My house and my neighbors are identical, just mirror images.

Hi Sam, this walk of yours brings lots of interesting thoughts. For one, yes, as you say - rich living next to poor, brand new mansion next to wooden dacha, but, it also says a lot about the history and social, cultural, economic development/transformation of Russia in the post-Soviet era. Your walk shows it clearly, thanks. Having visited and done work in 30+ African countries, and having visited Russia before, I can say that it is often the so-called contrasts and contradictions of those things that might seem strange, to a stranger in a strange land, that can lead to more nuanced understanding... it is about immersion, nevertheless, greetings from South Africa... hope to meet you next year (will reach out).

17:12 Look at all the different joining levels and flat roofs; that is a good example of a house I would never buy. The potential for fups in weather proofing are endless and lots of technical expensive sealers are used on flat roofs that are very hard to do yourself so requiring expensive labour. These systems also need a lot of maintenance and redooing every few years or leaks can develop since the rain can drive in to all the cracks or the water sit (and rot) if some drain gets blocked with debris. I dont know what they do in Russia obviously but there is a reason all the really old houses look the way they do with single sloping roofs; they get so old because the rain is channeled away from the building rather than given the opportunity so accumulate and sit in cracks/exposed joins. The design of a good house is timeless; a lot of modern designs will not last because they defy nature. Water is the universal solvent and must be channeled away as simply as possible so it dries quickly. Its very interesting listening to you and learning what you like so I just thought a little practical insight might be interesting. I have built several houses here in NZ where we have a lot of severe weather and even cyclone's (hurricanes) with torrential driving rain or baking hot sun. My house sits at about 35.95S so the Sun height is the same as Gibraltar or Morocco (N) but with open ocean all the way to the Antarctic so we get it all here - except frost or accumulating snow which can bring down a flat roof all on its own. Great video Sam! Cheers from Aotearoa

Hi Sam. In general a typical American house will have a fenced backyard, keeps kids and animals safe. American kids don’t play on the streets. Real rich neighbourhoods the houses do have heigh fences all the way around, keeps curious people out and it offers some form of protection. Of course there are always exceptions to the rule. In general each development will have similar houses in design and price range.
