The thing that pissed me off is the notion that the guy now has and more or less advocates for condom-less sex after being on PrEp. HIV is not the only incurable STD that's out there. There's genital warts, herpes and antibiotic resistant gonorrhea. Also I don't know about anyone else, regardless of whether it's completely reversible I still don't want syphilis.
@Jamieishere19 жыл бұрын
Michael Lamar Simeon Agreed, it is a shame that somebody who is potentially making such a positive contribution through support of PREP is totally irresponsible about condom use. I also felt the newscast is so far rather misrepresenting the issue. Gay men and black people are the most affected by HIV in the US, which accounts for ~3% of all cases globally. *Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS, Fact Sheet 1 July 1996, Page 2:* "Heterosexual (male-female) intercourse accounts for more than 70% of all adult HIV infections to date and homosexual (male-male) intercourse for a further 5-10%."
@bentpin78709 жыл бұрын
Michael Lamar Simeon I have to agree. Truvada has proven very effective in repressing HIV in the bloodstream but it's still there hiding in the bone marrow and other places in your body. The millisecond someone stops taking it it comes back with a vengeance. These later-generation HIV drugs are better but still very toxic for the body. Asking everyone to take it is is not a good idea. Throwing off social responsibility is even worse.

They say they can isolate HIV, and measure "viral loads" with the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test. But why is it that the scientist who won a Nobel Prize for inventing the PCR test, Kary Mullis, says HIV does not cause AIDS? Dr. Peter Duesberg was the first scientist to isolate the cancer gene. He was also the first scientist to discover and map out the genome sequence of the retrovirus. He agrees that HIV does not cause AIDS. Also, Dr. Rodney Richards, one of the first scientists to create the first HIV antibody test, disagrees with the "HIV causes AIDS" hypothesis. Ettiene de Harven, published first images of budding virus through EM, and he does not agree with the HIV hypothesis. Even Luc Montagnier, who won a Nobel Prize in 2007 for supposedly discovering HIV, publicly announced at the 1990 AIDS conference that HIV did not, after all, kill T-cells and could not be the cause of AIDS. Montagnier also admitted on French TV, in 1997, that he never isolated the virus - and neither has anyone else. (rethinkingaids)on Facebook

Dee Jay Yes and no. Most schools only teach safe sex practises for heterosexuals. For example, a condom isn't much use to a lesbian couple, instead things like dental dams would be useful. But because most schools don't teach about sex between two males or two females, it's harder for people in the LGBT community to learn safe sex practises that they will require.

In the UK this has been approved with justification given that it will be used for Sero discordant couples, yet at the same time we hear that positive people on effective therapy have zero transmission rate. So one contradicts the other. Prep is expensive, and it has been approved in the UK purely to set the scene for classifying HIV as a 'self inflicted' condition like cancer from smoking. The U.K. Gov plans to axe the funding of HIV meds,many PREP nicely sets the scene to make this possible.

And my concern was confirmed when Damon (Truvada activist) says that he actively chooses to have unprotected sex with men! This not only exposes him and others to HIV if Truvada fails to protect him. HIV has a really high mutation frequency and will spawn resistant copies that will then reproduce. This has been the case with most HIV treatments and I fear this will only be a "short" term solution as the drug has been in use for a pretty long time. In my opinion the only way of completly stopping the spread of the virus is either by manipulating its genome or some form of gene based therapy, both which are years away.
@insect2129 жыл бұрын

Julek Julekski Viruses have genomes? That's new to me. I thought it was a shell with a molecular payload that got injected into other cells to make them misbehave. I don't see how gene therapy, which as far as I've seen, doesn't exist yet, could solve the issue either since it's the immune system which the virus use to reproduce. We can't change the immune system to start destroying the immune system. That would kill anybody.
@ketaminewarrior9 жыл бұрын
Neavris Sorry,I didn't study biology in english so I may have mangled some terms. I was just proposing that IF we could somehow modify the RNA/DNA of the virus to change it's function to something less lethal or maybe to connect with receptors on nanotubes we could somehow minimize it's effect. Either that or modyfying the T-Cell to not allow for connection/replication of the virus, which theoretically could be achieved with advanced genemodification. I'm not a speciallist and I don't know if my knowledge can be applied here, I may be completly wrong
@jensonviga26008 жыл бұрын
+Julian Kozłowski this is the smartest thing I have read here, you got the terms right, I have thought similar methods and mentioned it to specialists at GU clinics. The are two types of people followers or leaders and it annoying that lots of followers seem to praise this new drug when it first came out I said it was a soft option that would only hinder the progress of a vaccine. Since people who are on hiv medication with undetectable viral load are not infectious then it would make sense to test everyone and get those infected on treatment urge infection rates drop.Prep is an expensive commodity if your chances of catching hiv are virtually zero. 14 % of people don't know and the idea if rolling out prep is to indirectly find that 14% of the population with active virus. All this gay bashing and HIV ignorance just slows progress, all the hiv drugs damage your body in different ways and jumping on the Prep bandwagon will only lead to kidney problems and bone thinking and all you young gay guy five years down the line will see how this drug ages you. nobody seems to be talking about the risk assessment. Your a smart guy don't ever change keep asking questions. Newer safer Prep like drugs are on there way God speed to the thinkers

After watching parts 1 through 3 I can't help but ask. Why is HIV predominantly a homosexual male issue? I must say that I'm not homophobic, just uninformed about the issue. This is an honest question.

4:48 the bar chart is missing white straight man or is the number so low that we dont even appear on it?
@KickinAus9 жыл бұрын
***** It's the latter. White Straight men are less than 2% of the subpopulation so they are not even represented on the graph.

I can't believe that guy doesn't wear condoms. If it's 99 percent per year, the chances of getting hiv increases by a not insignificant amount each year. And to think I was worried about herpes..

Seems like condom use should still be a priority but it does also seem like the drug is working when it is taken. That said I wonder why there isn't a time release delivery system similar to birth control.

Women have been taking birth control every single day for years now so I'm not really following the adherence argument. That would be like recommending there is no point in taking the birth control pill because it is not effective enough...

It's important for the male gay community, but i am really flabbergasted that almost no african person has been included in this video. After all people of the southern african regions are the hardest-stricken people by HIV and desperately need an anti-HIV-treatment that's affordable.

I had to laugh at the doctor saying "you can do better than that" during the throat swab part. That dr had a good sense of humor. More importantly, homeboy in this video is gonna pick up anal warts and herpes now which, in some form or another, leads to an increased cancer risk. Oh well, gay dudes have been stifled enough by the aids epidemic. They may as well get their freak on now that they can. If I had this drug available during my college years, I'd have definitely knocked way more sketchy chicks than I actually did.
