This trilogy is so underrated. I almost didn't gave it a chance due to my prejudice, thinking this is just another monster/alien invasion movie with apes instead. Oh how wrong I was! Catching 'Rise' on television with my mom got us interested, then 'Dawn' made us invested. While 'War' was not the most satisfying ending, it was a raw look at rage and still optimistic towards the future. The complexities of each character really goes beyond your regular sci-fi flick; it is a story about apes that revealed so much about humanity's darkness and capacity for hope. The 2nd and 3rd film made me trust in Matt Reeves, no questions asked, and so hype for The Batman. He always pushed an already complex themes to even further depths of darkness, without forgetting the core morality of his characters.

Endingen ar never satasfying enough. Becaus we all knew realisticly its only temporary. Rally is a end satasfying enough. The only Endingen that sacraficed me Personen was the end of Harry Potter (Books as it git the Main thenes better acrose then the movies) and the end of the Xehanort Story in Kingdom Hearts 3. War was also satasfying to me.

This is exactly what I wanted live action Transformers movies to be. A film series where the non humans are the main and aren't treated as secondary characters or a joke. The Planet of the Apes trilogy could have easily fallen into this trap and have the apes become secondary characters in their own film. But no Matt Reeves, Andy Serkis and everyone else took the risk that non human characters and be well written and three dimensional as human characters are normally portrayed

Also wish Gold Man pointed out one last thing in Rise The scene between Will and Caesar where Caesar utters his 2nd and last English phrase of the movie "Caesar is free" and Will after seeing and experiencing everything across the 3rd act finally recognizes and lets Caesar go and be his own man with his own people not bounded by his or anyone else's rules because he agreed with him that Caesar is free and accepted him just the way he is even if it took him all this time Which makes Caesar coming back to his old home and seeing the videos of him as a baby and Will talking and playing with him in Dawn all the more sadder Despite not being the best father Caesar truly did loved him in his own way despite knowing he needs to be his own person When asked who the man in the video was he simply replied "A Good Man" I am so stoked for Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes and this new trilogy Its gonna be epic

I always viewed Koba as not acting out of love for apes but out of hate for humanity. In Rise, he showed clearly distain for them during experiments. At the end of the film, he takes pleasure in pushing Jacobs, the businessman in the helicopter, off the bridge. In Dawn, he shows that same glee when killing 2 humans with guns. He treated Ceasar as a traitor for showing compassion for humans. Koba even killed Ash, a fellow ape, in cold blood for not killing a human.

He didn't care enough about his own kind to overtake his hatred for humans. He was willing to kill Caesar, the one who freed him from his previous torture and accepted him as family, just so he could rile up the others into attacking the humans. He pushes other apes aside to grab weapons or push them off a horse in the attack on the human settlement just so he could charge in himself guns blazing. He killed Ash (who was essentially a child/teenager in terms of ape years) for not blindly conforming to his hatred. He only cared about the apes in so far as they could be of use to his main goal of getting back at humanity. Thing is, in a way he is right to not trust humans and to want to be more decisive than Caesar but he basically acted like the same humans who tortured him. He lies, he promises good things to those who put trust in him, he clambers over his own kind just to achieve his goals. "You are not ape" is a powerful line because Koba became as bad as the humans he hated.

I've always had a special connection with the planet of the apes franchise it was the first piece of media iv ever seen where i share a name with the main character Seeing Caesar's journey from a captive to a revolutionary leader always struck a chord with me. Witnessing him stand up and fight for his kind filled me with pride. But as the series progressed, and Caesar's story came to its inevitable conclusion, I couldn't help but feel a sense of loss. His death hit me harder than I expected, leaving me genuinely saddened. these movies are just so perfect to me.

Koba and Dreyfuss have the same set of priorities, but there's a huge difference on how they order them. Both want survival and see the other side as monsters; both love themselves and their people, but Dreyfuss loves his people more than himself, and Koba loves himself more than his people.

There’s a book called Dawn of the Planet of the Apes: Firestorm, that fills the gap between Rise and Dawn, but also goes into Koba’s origins, and it is even worse than what we saw in the movies. When he was young, he was raised in a primate research lab with his mother. The scientist taught them both sign language and their keeper was kind. Unfortunately, the keeper was replaced with an abusive man who beat his mother to death in reprisal to the scientist reprimanding his abuse of Koba.

Really loved this video and agree with so much said. I thought this trilogy was fantastic and have also recently rewatched in anticipation of the upcoming release in May. I always felt that it’s important to understand that humans created the virus and basically did everything necessary to keep it progressing. The thoughts expressed about Will is so true. He actually only becomes truly interested in Cesars needs and concerns when it’s too late although he does understand that it’s right to walk away. I appreciate that Will was left out of the sequel as he isn’t important except with the flashbacks via camcorder. I think it’s important to note that two characters extremely important to Dawn are blue eyes and carver. They are extensions of Cesar and Dreyfus and are critical in progressing the plot. So important to have extensions of the main characters in movies. War is a good movie and I enjoy it but is the weakest of the 3. The connection to the story of Moses and the promised land is very cool. I wonder if it was intended. I’d never heard this before. Thanks so much for this one. Looking forward to kingdom

Idk man something about this trilogy is just so touching. The first is pretty solid on its own- that scene where Caesar speaks for the first time was a cinematic masterpiece. But the second and third films… goddamn. So many emotions conveyed just by mocap and great cgi. I have cried many times. So excited for Kingdom😊

I recently watched them, too. They're really great movies. I love the campy originals, even the weird Tim Burton one. These ones really make the idea of apes taking over the world seem possible. And they did it right when it came to releasing them. They waited 3-4 years between each one, while other studios would've tried cranking out one every year. Also, just to throw it out there, the 1968 film is based on a French novel from 1963 and takes some liberties with its adaptation. Not to mention, Will is putting himself in some serious danger bringing a chimp into the house because even without being genetically enhanced, chimps will turn on their trainers or handlers at a certain age. It's like once they mature, they become violent and will rip your face off.

How the hell have I not watched these movies?! I remember seeing the trailer for War for the Planet of the Apes then forgetting about it almost immediately like it was some weird popcorn flick. The thing is this sounds right up my alley. It is in the realm of Science fiction/Fantasy and tackles trauma/mental health and just the human condition in general?! That is exactly what I am in the mood for especially since I grow more and more angry with how people view others as this enemy because a couple months ago I broke up with a girlfriend and the crux of her argument was that I was not on her side of the political spectrum. I get so angry when all people do is view others in terms of “oh you’re not on my side so you are my enemy”. I need to watch these movies now. Also, you keep mentioning messages- may I recommend a wonderful essay (it’s about a four or five minute read) called A message about messages by Ursula K Leguin. She mentions how most stories should not be viewed that way because the things a story tells are in the flow of the story and how it is told- we lose a lot when saying “this is the message”. Anyways, rant over, thank you for telling me about these movies- I am going to watch them over the weekend in between Fallout episodes.

For starters, I've wanted new video essays on these movies for a while. Your video arrived at a good time. That said, as it's the case with other videos of yours, I have some disagreements and with this video it starts early. First, when it comes to Will's love towards Caesar, you mention things like Caesar being leashed as a sign Will doesn't love him that much. I think you don't see it from the right angle. For example, most dogs have to be leashed outside of private property. But some breeds have to have a muzzle guard, legally. Does it mean the owner likes the dog less than if it was another breed that doesn't require a muzzle guard? Well no. It's just the law forcing him to take stronger preventive mesures in case the dog is badly raised and attack somebody. Which kinda happened with their neighbor in the movie. Caesar saw his "grandfather" being attacked and responded. The same way a dog would defend its owner, and depending on the breed the dog would be able to deal potentially more or less damage than another. Hence the different laws for the different breeds. So what I mean is that Will leashing Caesar doesn't show how Will love him. It only shows how society sees how dangerous Caesar could be, as erratic and instinct driven as a dog. So to avoid legal liability, Will leashes Caesar most likely against his will (no pun intended). I'm not sure I layed down my thought efficiently, but I hope you ponder on it and come to a more informed assessment of what's depicted in the movie. And wow, didn't expect to go that deep into details. I'll post this first comment and I'll see if I edit it later to add something about the other movies or other issues I have. Or I'll create a new comment per issue/movie to be more efficient. That said, even though I disagree with you more often than I'd like, I don't wanna live in an echo chamber, so I'll keep having you challenge my opinions whether you change, affect them or not. Cheers from France my man! 🍻

I try not to compare. Let each stand on it's own merit's. Hoping they start making them longer. 150 minutes to 180 so they can go deeper in the story and characters. Otherwise, great so far. Dawn being my favoriite. Will see how Kindom goes. Biggest complaint is the time release spacing for each movie. If they are making huge profits, 2+ billion gross, why not do them back to back each year or two. Will they do a tv series with a decent budget? Last of Us, Fallout

I absolutely LOVE these movies. Matt Reeves is a brilliant director and when he took over the films became solid gold. That’s why I’m worried about this new movie. I don’t know who’s involved, but I know it’s not Matt Reeves. Also, if I had one criticism it would be that the scale of the conflicts never felt true to the movie titles. These never felt like planet-wide conflicts. I get that these are personal stories and need to be told in a particular way, but I think if they had included just one simple graphic at the end of the second movie - like the one from the first showing the spread of the virus - but instead depicting small skirmishes erupting all over a map of the earth, it would’ve done a LOT to make this seem like a true global event. Little bursts of explosions and fires on a map of the earth would imply that what we had just seen happen in the events of that movie was happening simultaneously across the globe. We don’t need to actually see those battles, or the players, but to see a little map like that would do so much to make the scale of this trilogy feel truly worldwide. Instead I can’t help but think a) the whole planet is a barren wasteland and these are literally the only surviving humans, or b) there’s the possibility that small enclaves of humans are living out their lives entirely undisturbed, walking dead style, disconnected from the events of the movies. And that kind of ruins the immersion for me.
