I bought his book how not to die and went vegan 18 months ago. I’ve gone from 250 ponds to 190. I’m a 59 year old 6’2” male. I never counted calories and enjoy food and eating now more than ever. My bad cholesterol went from 184 to 90. He has made a believer out of me and several of my friends!! Thx Doc.

@Blue Blue he's always had no hair but he won't do very well in old age with that low muscle mass. And on a vegan diet your body has to make so many nutrients like cholesterol, choline and non essential amino acids. I cant imagine the body thriving long term while having to do all that plus deal with antinutrients like oxalates.

@@coreyg.3106 our body makes its own cholesterol we dont need extra cholesterol from cheese or animal protein. that is why heart disease is the #1 killer in the united states more than #2 cancer. do you even know basic nutrition? so why are you even making any claims lol. also choline levels for most people in the US are very low which is funny because meat consumption is at an all time high here. maybe theres a reason why chronic diseases reach a new high every year. every single nutritionist says people aren't eating enough plants therefore meat isn't giving u the proper nutrients you need.

We had a "health fair" at work in 2016 and the technician took off her glasses and sat back and said to me: "Are you like some kind of super athlete? We RARELY see numbers as good as this!" Iodine, Omega 3s, and selenium are actually three things vegans need to watch more carefully than iron (most vegans in the U.S. & Canada have enough of the latter b/c the soil is rich enough with it, but if you're worried about being deficient you can supplement or consume a Brazil nut - the food w/ the highest selenium content - every couple days).

Awesome talk, Michael Greger, loved your book. Since going plant based I've been asked by genuinely curious people, why don't you eat meat? I recently asked someone the question after they had asked me why I don't, why do you eat meat? They paused, for protein. I then asked, who told you that you need to get protein from meat? They paused and couldn't really answer the question in a straight forward way. The hardest thing for me since I transitioned and I think for a lot of people is you pretty much have to admit your entire life has been a lie and that you were manipulated and controlled by big industry. Once you do make the switch, become more conscious, educated in nutrition and compassionate, your entire life will change for the better! We have a plant based cooking show on our channel and are trying to spread the message in Canada!

@velvetpaws999
@velvetpaws999 Жыл бұрын
Congratulations, I am very joyful and happy for you. Eliminating the "News" is a very important element in our changes! I have not watched TV and "news" for 30 years, when I threw the TV into the dumpster. The way I see it is that we are being manipulated through this media, and we are constantly driven to fear reactions. There are basically no positive "news" anywhere, ever! That means, people, unbeknownst to them, are producing huge amounts of adrenaline every day, and it contributes to all of their stress in a major way. We are not supposed to produce adrenaline every day. Its function is geared to "survival mode", meaning only in extreme situations of life threatening character should our body resort to this hormone. The sad thing is that people get addicted to the hormone shot and want it every day! Yes, adrenaline is an addictive substance. And it makes your mind foggy. And it kills your organs, slowly but steadily. Even exercise taken too far generates and triggers adrenaline release. So, running until you are totally exhausted and beyond your endurance level, or any other form of sport pushed beyond the natural tolerance of your body is damageable to your health, not healthy at all. Everything is moderation is the golden rule!

There is extreme vegans but I’m not all of a sudden going to tell others they HAVE to go vegan just cause I did but what’s so wrong with trying to advocate for healthy living either way especially if it really makes a difference in someone’s wellbeing? A lot of dietary stuff has to be trial and error of course but if this helps some people try to make at least BETTER choices for optimal living than why is that comedic?

Truly selfless individuals make the best long term vegans because they aren't doing it for themselves but rather the animals. eating to much of anything is bad for you. Any diet that seeks to remove entire food groups should come with a disclaimer. and should only be used in certain instances where there is evidence to suggest that they might be beneficial. (like keto and type 2 diabetes or WFP diets and heart disease) the main problem with the vegan diet is that it is deficient by default, lacking essential nutrients like vitamin B12 and vitamin D3. Keto might be low on carbohydrates but is not missing any essential nutrients. In general I believe that the best diet is omnivorous´and balanced, the problem is not meat or carbs the problem is ultra processed foods with all of the calories and none of the nutrients + additives, agricultural chemicals and other pollutants.

Your triglycerides were probably sky high? Also, what was your HDL:LDL ratio? It should be around 1:2. High cholesterol isn't necessarily a bad thing, it becomes critical and damages the arterial walls when too many lipids formed out of sugar are floating around in your bloodstream.

@@bowtiedreynard9167 "High cholesterol isn't necessarily a bad thing" Actually, elevated LDL levels are THE central causal factor in atherosclerosis. Normal LDL levels are around 35-70, so people can't run around with LDL levels of 90-200 or more and expect to avoid the consequences of having excess cholesterol in their system. You have to keep the body in proper balance to avoid problems.

@@chrisobber5604 The problem is not inherent to a plant-based diet. It's a problem caused by living in a civilisation that deprives you of the opportunity to receive those essenstial nutrients naturally. Perhaps you are trying to dimiss the validity of a plant-based diet, or perhaps implying something nagetive, simply becuase you don't receive certain nutrients directly or naturally from plants, when in fact you aren't supposed to. Want B12 without animal products? Live off in the wild and drink from ponds. Note: B12 Deficiencies are common in non-vegan populations as well. The strange part is that animals are also being injected with B12. It's so ridiculous and intellectually dishonest to claim or imply that plant-based diets are dangerous or life threatening without supplementation without also mentioning that a regular diet is just as life threatening without supplementation (directly or indirectly by injecting animals instead) and even more likely to develop deficiencies since vegans tend to suffer from fewer deficiencies overall. _''Like it or not but the vegan diet is NOT based on sufficient evidence.''_ His books and videos are always cited with tons of research. Oof high cholesterol isn't anything bad. Look into HDL:LDL ratio and Triglycerides. If the triglycerides are high that is a good indication of a heart attack waiting to happen. Or if your HDL:LDL ratio is too low. This is why people shouldn't take their families' health into their own hands if they haven't properly researched.

Most cite a weak conclusion stating that more research is needed to draw a conclusion, while he tricks you into believing it is scientific proof. While many other claims he completely contradict these conclusions. He pulls one or two lines from a study that conclude something completely opposing his claim. Most of these are for meat and plant based diet studies. Much of his other work regarding weight loss and health benefits of plants are spot on but in regards to meat, he clearly has some bias against meat that he tries to prove by misrepresenting studies. You can’t put everyone on a plant based diet. It’s very irresponsible and will cause widespread health issues. We follow this way of eating, and combine it with organic homegrown wholefood. Our young kids are very fit and healthy with boundless energy, and love their vegetables. They leave for school on the bus at 8am, get home at 5pm, and do multiple activities outside of school, and excel in almost everything they apply themselves to. However, because of their diet, they can't eat at the school canteen, so the school has allowed them a packed lunch (the only two kids in the school to do so), and they are segregated from the others and made to eat at a table on their own. We're very normal people, but we seem to be looked upon as being extreme; there's definitely a lot of irony to that. The country introduced one day a week of no meat in the school canteens (I think mostly environmentally driven), and several parents were up in arms about it.

The disclaimer from TED is demonstrably false. Both the British and American Dietetics Associations - the largest bodies of dietitians in the world - have stated without reservation that plant based diets are nutritionally sound for all stages of life, including pregnancy, nursing, and for athletes. The general prescription is already there; the general adoptions of plant based diets will cause a precipitous decline in lifestyle diseases and deaths, a corresponding decline in healthcare costs, not to mention a vast reduction in greenhouse gas emissions (see Cowspiracy).

How could they possibly know if it's safe to raise a kid vegan?
@stewartedgington8164
@stewartedgington8164 5 жыл бұрын
@@yingyang1008 Quite simply because it has been done successfully many time. At the same time we continue to have the disasters of eating animal products that is now even causing T2 diabetes in teens. There is no "necessary" nutrient in dead animal or their extrusions that cannot be much better derived much more salubriously from plant sources. The two apparent exceptions are vitamin b12 and certain omega 3 fatty acids. But these are not made by animals and are completely available from non dead animal sources. When they do come from dead animal or animal postpartum extrusions, they come from a host of naturally occuring negative factors that have our life expectancy decreasing rather than increasing. Giving your child a class 1 carcinogen like cigarettes or ham on the one hand or a class 2A carcinogen like fresh dead flesh is something to be avoided. This conclusion is obvious unless you consider raising the odds of your child developing a chronic disease to be a good thing. That of course constitutes either child abuse or profound ignorance. Given the preponderance of evidence of the horror stories from consuming animal products, the burden of proof is squarely on those who would advocate feeding children those products.

Chris Obber if they were all epidemiology studies I would not be wasting my time here. Dr Greger views a body of evidence as having cohort studies, meta-analysis, and randomised control studies that have been verified by having the results replicated in subsequent studies. Also industry funded studies have to be more closely scrutinised for manipulation of outcomes and industry funding is always hi lighted when cited.

I think what is more important than focussing on a plant based diet is to support sustainable farming. Buy local organic and seasonal vegetables, seeds, nuts and fruits when possible. If you are a meat eater chose pastured grass feed meats, free range poultry and wild fish. Avoid factory farmed foods. Being vegetarian but purchasing your vegetables, fruits, grain and soy from huge mono crop industries that grow the same crops year after year, using enormous amounts of chemical pesticides and fertilizers will continue the damage of our soils, water, air, and climate.
