@@yourbiggestfan395 Yeah, I never understood why people equate evil with backstabbing. Plenty of good characters will do that as well, example being the party in the video above. @yourbiggestfan395
@yourbiggestfan395 4 жыл бұрын
@@if7723 Evil could also be you attempting to strong arm money out of the orphanage after you save it from the fire. Anyone who behaviors entirely with selfish motivations is considered an 'evil' character. Legit pitting yourself against the group that's providing you jobs, wealth, and power, is a terrible idea. It's stupid to go against the party, any evil character that's not dumb as hell would see the benefits of having a crew backing them up.

@scrittle
@scrittle 4 жыл бұрын
@@CharterForGaming Evil is to an evil person, doing good. Evil is most notably using an excessive action to solve a problem/ get what they want, when other options could theoretically work, i.e, stealing an apple when you could pay for it. Some people are pushed into a bad barrel when given no option, but justifying their actions when caught is still evil.
@NeiasaurusCreations
@NeiasaurusCreations 4 жыл бұрын
@@scrittle In this case they had the guy take a good chunk of the damage, refused to help him. They tried to steal his shit as well. So no, that's not 'good' actions. A good person would try to redeem or change the person. Not use them, and leave them for dead, or try to loot their shit.
@Aim54Delta
@Aim54Delta 4 жыл бұрын
@@scrittle I would disagree that an evil person sees their actions as good. While it is possible for a good person to commit evil while believing they are good, an evil person fundamentally rejects the "self" of others. An evil person is interested almost exclusively in their own interests. Smart or dynamic evil will understand that the peons will rise up to smite them, and that a thousand villagers with torches and pitchforks can cause then severe problems - so smart evil recognizes that others are not compelled to follow the self-interest of the evil character. For example, a lawful evil character could head up a highly efficient and even outwardly benevolent corporation because the evil person understands that benevolence is valued by the masses. So long as it advantages the evil character to be cooperative, they will appear to. The smartest of them may never actually enter into a situation where they lack the power to act benevolent. Terrorize a person and they will fight you over nothing. Save a person in turmoil and they will follow you through hell. In any event, if push comes to shove - an evil person will save themselves. That sinisterly benevolent corporate leader? When the extraplanar invasion from the 4th dimension comes storming through and wrecking things, he's going to pack his shit up and GTFO. Not only that, he will likely exploit the loss of resistance to his influence (assuming he escapes with wealth/means) to again advantage himself. If he is smart, he won't trip the warning flags of the people - but he will always have strings attached to gifts, always have interest of some variety on a loan, or always have some angle. Other people exist for him, not to themselves. He's just aware they disagree with that assertion. A good person generally would give simply to see the joy or relief of another. A good person isn't buying favors when buying a round at the bar, necessarily. They aren't going to consider it a failure if donating to a town doesn't get them a plaque of recognition or statues in their honor. A good person enjoys seeing others succeed and grow, and is willing to invest of themselves into that growth of others. Thus, it would not be strange to see good people working with evil people - the evil people working the angle for recognition and favors while the good people enjoy seeing the growth of others. A true master of evil in a ruling position, for example, would see to it that his empire was the envy if the world - not just in military prowess but in all things the average person desired. The devil isn't just a part timer, he keeps heaven running smoothly.

Honestly, the whole singling out the “weaker” players was already bad enough. However it’s just inexcusable to single out players for not playing a style that you want. If they hinder the experience for everyone else, then maybe, but being a good DM is about letting everyone have their time. It’s honestly why I like Co-DMing. It allows us to discuss the party/session and give feedback. Ultimately the rule of thumb is to get everyone involved, invested, have fun and get whatever they’re looking for out of the game.

That is literally not how social groups work, and I am someone who is extremely anti social and moderately insane and read far too much into things and dwell on them for 10+ years after the fact. The OP probably is a piece of shit like the rest of the group going on the intro and is just as toxic to play with and probably know in a non gaming situation. Someone said it came about because of a religious dispute, allegedly DM was a Christian, and OP is an atheist. Now look at online atheists and /Atheism reddit. @@DwarfyDoodad while its possible you are right...there is another possibility. I had a DM turn on me in college, and with him, the other 9 players in our group...because i asked his girlfriend's sister on a date. His girlfriend hated my guts, and she told him if he didnt kick me out of the group, she would dump him. Well, i was the more popular DM when i actually ran campaigns, because my homebrew is pretty unique, and ranges from n00b to 'what the fuck why is there a level 100 undead dragon in a goblin cave' in terms of difficulty (i could be an ass, but i always made a way for them to win, if they just put a bit thought of into it) so he set about turning the others against me, by having my character's actions cause problems for theirs. Intelligent people would realize i had nothing to do with the DM sending a high level ogre after my character, and when my character kills it, suddenly it 'death screams' and summons a horde of orcs. Intelligence is a dump stat for my old group, obviously. Eventually i left the group. not long after the group disbanded because the DM really wasnt that great, and only ever used premade modules for his campaigns. playing the same damn campaign over and over gets old ya? so for all we know, the OP did something fairly mundane that the DM took special offense to. Leaving the christian/atheist bit aside, in my experience, it doesnt take much for a bunch of DnD nerds to turn on each other like fat people trapped without food.

If my character was in this situation, they'd probably survive since they are neutral. They'd probably be the only one defending the 'evil' player, as they are an anarcho capitalist and a believer in redemption, but also hate self-righteous people that can cause more problems than solve. Whole time would probably see how the 'good' characters were getting full of themselves. So, if he were to walk in on this scene (it's unlikely he would have been there to toast), he'd probably shrug and take a swig of his own flask. Then he'd say "So, this is the story: Apparently, someone poisoned the drinks, so in the interest of preserving your life and property you killed the two that remained standing. But, suddenly, a young dragon walked in and went to take all the loot for themselves..." **Turns into a neutral type dragon.* "...so you ran away. Now, where exactly were you going to run? @@scottvickers338 Are you stupid? The main factor to him killing them all wasn't that he didn't like them all, it's that they were toxic af, singling him out and trying to kill him at every single turn just cause they can because of his alignment. Worst part being that even the dm was part of this bullshit. The other characters were supposed to be good alignment while the player was supposed to be the only evil, yet they all acted like assholes, as if all of them were evil and the player, who never until that point actively went after the others for their ridicule and torment, who was loyal to the party up until they started doing this shit, was the only one who was good in any way. It's an unspoken rule of dm-ing, you don't fucking single out a single player for ridicule, it ruins the mood of the game, unless said player is going for it himself then so be it, but if you're ruining the game for him, you're a complete failure of a dm.

When the player survived the poison and took it(smart move, if the DM says there is poison you aught to take it) he didn't use it to help the party he just made it worse by getting revenge. At this point the players and DM teaming against him would have ruined his experience, but killing off the toxic players? That isn't going to make the group less toxic just more so. What I'm saying is that when everyone is in the party is being bias toward you and kill them rather than address it, well your group just got that much worse, even if it would be pretty satisfying. I know if I was DMing and a player was evil, I would only respond to the role playing. I don't think this DM did a great job of handling, he just made it worse actually. I not defending targeting a player, not for very good reason at least, one which was not provided. All I'm saying is that him responding in just as toxic a way, doesn't help much. Does that make more sense?

I had a party do something very similar to me for being a chaotic-neutral witch. Fortunately my DM was much nicer about it than this DM. The Paladin that kept trying to kill me was apparently closer friends to the group than I was since everyone sided with him. I'm still processing the DM loudly announcing to the entire party "He's evil." From how the group play was described, it's charitably possible the Paladin handed the DM a note that said "I discretely cast Detect Evil and Good then look over the party," but even then the DM should have told just him and he should have figured out how to tell the rest of the party himself. OP's reaction implies the Paladin didn't even ask that much, though. I can't fathom why the DM would straight-up target one player and set him up to fail, compared to just telling him "roll up another character and save the secret assassin for later"?

Exactly. This kind of thing is just terrible as a DM. Reminds me of a similar game, once. Played a necromancer cleric (Pathfinder) with ranks in siege engineering. (Had a cart drawn by skeletal horses and a Ballista on it) DM got annoyed at me for luring his BBEG into an area with a spiky pit, (Dungeons are fun). The fighter (At my request) then proceeded to throw him in. then I shot him with one of my Immovable rod arrows*tm* trapping him there. (Those things were the fucking best). The wizard then proceeds to bombard that fucker with fireballs, while the ranger plugged him full of holes. (We shouldn't have been able to kill him. It took WAY too many rounds, and the only reason we could kill him was because we isolated him from his troops with a sneaky use of the level 1 ventriloquism spell. Me, the (LE) cleric, didn't get my exp because...I didn't do enough damage. Then the entire party proceeds to walk in the door and call dibs on various pieces of loot. (You don't need loot, you're a cleric!) On the way out, I shrunk a massive slab of metal masquerading as a Guillotine with a black blade-edge (important later) and put it in my (overized) bag of holding. New player joins, similar situation, similar rules. Paladin, finds out I'm evil because 'F*** internal consistancy', and my WTFo'meter goes up another notch. My character got along well with most PCs before. Now only one (The LN Fighter) will even give him the time of day. This kind of shit goes on, up until the point that the DM gets tired of us pissing around the woods and throws a LITERAL DRAGON at us in the dead of night. Now, my character has the leadership feat, and the cohort I got (chosen by DM of course) was a level 2 cleric. LEVEL 2! We started at level 10, and we went up by 4 levels. Of course, this guy got no EXP, because **** him, right? So me and the schmuck are on duty, everyone else is asleep. Dragon roars from the distance, comes right at us, and I decide, hell with them, I got this: So I have my ballista loaded with one of my special bolts. The tip of this one is a folding boat. One command word, and that box becomes a canoe, two, and it becomes a schooner. So this dragon comes right at me, ignoring the other, much larger morsels we knew were in the woods (long story) and flew at us like I shot its' grandmother. So I order the cleric to cast true strike...on the ballista. I then proceed to take the called shot down its' throat (a -20 chance) with a +20 bonus. Roll an 18. It goes right down, then I yell the command word twice. Ask the DM how much damage the dragon takes from having a literal ship erupt into being in its' esophagus. He scowls, rolls, then says "It's thrown, crash-landing near you as it tries to use its' breath weapon to incinerate the boat. It's bleeding quite a bit, but your boat isn't going to last long". He grins smugly, then shrugs. "It's probably just going to fly away as soon as it can get rid of it". So I grit my teeth, pull my guillotine out, levitate it 90 ft up, then dispell the shrink, enlarge it and let go. Need to roll... Nat 20. Nat FUCKING 20. So DM looks down at his sheet, I roll, and he rolls his eyes. "The dragon's scales give way, and your attack has done severe damage to its' spine...However, it appears to be healing over quickly". I asked him how much HP it had, and he said -2, but it has improved toughness. (PF you don't die until your HP hits -CON mod). Here's the problem: He gave the dragon hardness 20, due to the scales being extremely tough. The thing had 18 HP before death...But Adamantine (The Black edge), ignored up to hardness 20. I pointed that out, and he froze mid-bite (Was eating a donut). Basically from there, I killed it, brought it back as my minion, then proceeded to kill the rogue (Stole from me regularly, to the point where I had three coin purses filled with lead coins, explosive dust, sawdust and flint, or something of the sort. One time I skeletalised a few rats just to have them bite his fingers), had the dragon eat the paladin, then left the others alive. (They were okay, just trying not to piss off Sir Templarson Crusader IV. (Yes, that was his name).

People readily forget that Evil Characters are needed to to bring a level of Practicality and outside the box thinking to things so that they keep running smoothly and solutions can be solved in many ways. @@Quandry1 I mean, I tend to play CG characters in a way that solves that problem, but in groups that have biases against that alignment (annoyingly common, honestly, because people tend to play CG like CE(with a side of Stupid Stupid) but without the downside of detect evil because they're """"""""""""""""""""good"""""""""""""""""""") I absolutely understand needing an evil character to push things along. The problem is just that both the chaotic and evil axes are maligned by the players who use them as excuses to ruin games, when really they just need to be run by someone who understands storytelling and separating themselves from the character. Some day soon I'm going to make a long-form post along the lines of "here's what every alignment should be generally doing to fit into a functional party! I was attempting to summon an eldritch horror to be my personal bodyguard, only the DM knew what I was doing. the rest of the party just knew that I was really excited to get some ritual chalk that I had spent a lot of money on. the barbarian decides OOC that he's gonna steal it and in character offers to go pick it up from the merchant since I was currently sealed behind a 1 way barrier. I tell him OOC that if he does anything stupid with my chalk I'd literally kill his character (we'd had friendly duels in the past and I stomped him, plus now he's a demon and I'm well versed in the use of holy smite). the fucker EATS my chalk, so I decide to disembowel him to get it back (I had planned to revivify him after) unfortunately "super god" who is stronger than the regular gods showed up and said that the demon kings weren't allowed to harm each other until they had ascended. the barb was the king of gluttony so all he had to do to ascend was eat everything he sees while I was the demon king of envy, not greed, because greed would be too easy to ascend, envy. every time I ask him to explain how to ascend as envy he's either really vague or he just dodges the question. everyone else had easy crowns, wrath just had to punch stuff angrily, greed had to steal stuff, lust had to fuuuuck, but me? I had to want what other people had, but not steal from them because of super god's rules, and also just thinking that I want something of theirs isn't good enough, you have to act on it. it was literally impossible for me to reach a point where I could harm him but he was gonna be able to harm me very soon (he really liked abusing my character just because I could heal myself, everyone did, they thought it was funny to hurt me because "it's okay, just lay on hands yourself lol"). so I waited, I pretended I was fine when deep down my character was seething. I was a paladin of revenge, my entire character sheet was full of things saying how I hate betrayal and would kill those who betrayed me. I kept dropping hints to this but the dense fuckers didn't notice. finally we get to an arena. there's an evil wizard who trapped us and forced us to fight monsters for his amusement. he brings out 3 white dragons, a family consisting of a juvenile, an adult, and an ancient dragon. a fun fact the DM had forgotten about me (because he was too lazy to read my backstory, despite me constantly referencing it) is that my grandmother is actually a red dragon, and that my village has a pact with a group of blue and white dragons. I speak draconic, I played with dragons as a baby, I considered dragons to be members of my family. MY WHOLE FUCKING CHARACTER QUEST WAS TO FIND A SUIT OF CURSED ARMOR THAT WOULD TURN ME INTO A DRAGON FOR SHITS SAKE. now I knew that these dragons would be slaughtered by my overpowered party, and the evil wizard even taunted us saying that white dragons were going extinct so it's becoming harder and harder to play this game. I am a paladin for the goddess of balance, I couldn't stand back and let such an unbalanced fight take place >:) it was time for revenge. I walked over to the dragons, said in draconic "I mean you no harm. I am friend to dragons." then while standing in the center of the group I turned my sword and shield towards my party. (surprised_pikachu_face.jpg) you see I was the party's tank. I had an ability that let me create an AOE of protection, to basically any ally in range that got attacked the attack would be redirected to me, this skill also doubled my AC to 40 so it was literally impossible for them to hit me, not that they even could because we were all demon kings and Super god's rule was still in effect to anyone who attacked me would lose half their HP and I;d be unharmed. I was also able to heal from range so even if they damaged the dragons with spells I could just heal them or cast revivify. I managed to hold out for 3 sessions, but eventually they were able to overpower me. technically I had never once struck them with my sword, I only used it to block, so they were the ones who attacked me. they banned me from the pocket dimension we had with a mansion inside it, they destroyed the shrine I built to my goddess, and they kicked me out of the party. I wasn't able to kill them, but I had made them suffer the way I suffered. the campaign couldn't continue after that, the DM declared that a war broke out and shattered the continents, and it was now 300 years later. we all rolled up new characters, I'm now a goblin alchemist with a love of bombs and little regard for my allies safety in regards to splash damage. "it's ok, I'll just give you a potion lol" ( I spit in all the potions I make)

Me personally, if I was a paladin, I'd still heal the guy but I'd make it clear that I'd be keeping an eye on him since, you know, he's been fighting alongside me for so long. My trust would be damaged, yes, but not utterly destroyed. I'd want to at least know the full story. This would also make me the only survivor since I"d very quickly get fed up with the party and probably go off on my own to try and find the assassin since he's separated from the group (both due to 'keep friends close and enemies closer' and 'evil or not, he's our ally and we can't just leave him to fend for himself). And thus, he'd probably find some way to keep me out of the toast (or I'd flip out over the guy's stuff being stolen and threaten to bring the thief to prison myself). I'd probably flip out over the assassin's antics (IC, of course) but I wouldn't be trying to kill the guy (and I assume he'd do the same). In the end, my character would be alive by the end of it (If feeling burned by how a person with so much potential to do good and a trusted comrade was pushed to turning on all of them (after they all but turned on him)). Which is more than I can say for this group of PCs.

I am half surprised the DM just did not drop rocks on the assassin once he poisoned everyone and auto passed them all because divine intervention. Sounds like what happened was that new paladin was to be the star of the show so to speak, and the DM thought having an evil character would complicate things. So the DM tried to kill the character on the spot by having the party kill him where he stood, but that plan failed. If it worked he probably would of had the guy roll up a new character at the same level that was good, and everyone would go on their way as side kicks to cousin super pally. So then the DM became fixated on trying to "correct his mistake" without the use of falling rocks. Which then gave the assassin a serious axe to grind.

Aside from maybe the extremely strict paladins who often have a stick up their ass, most good aligned characters probably wouldn't go after a loyal party member who is evil. Redeeming evil characters is always the better option, and if someone is traveling with your group and actively helping then they are an ideal candidate for redemption.

This is a D&D story I heard on 4chan. It's long, but it's one of my favorites and worth reading to the end: Our story begins with the entire party dead, spare myself and some fighter or whatever. I'm sitting at the tavern fully healed, when all of a sudden word breaks out. "THE GREAT ORC ARMY IS INVADING THROUGH THE EASTERN WOODS!!!" This is clearly the DM sick of this campaign, and wanting to end it in a blaze of glory. Knowing this, I decide to go in to the woods and defeat the army and its leader. But being a Ranger, I decided I needed to get creative in order to stop the invading army. So about a half a day's worth of travel I stop and scout the landscape. Below the massive Orc army is hiking up the side of the mountain, and will emerge ready to fight in a few hours. I run around preparing various traps ala Predator movie, because fighting an entire army with only my sword was impossible. But everything was ready for when they reach the top of the hill, and I wad determined to take down as many as possible. Now this is important to the story: As a player, I inherited some die from a friend, and in the past whenever I used them they'd cause me to fail my rolls. It pissed me off, but somehow I was convinced these dice would pull through for me in a big way, some day, so I kept using them for important moments. Regardless, once the Orc army emerges the traps are systematically set off, killing multiple members of the confused army. Eventually I run out of traps, and is forced to jump down and take on the army members face first. When they reduced me to half of my HP, I am unexpectedly greeted by a massive intimidating magic-wielding Orc Chieftain. The general of the Orc army. He approached me, and naturally began monologue: "Foolish human. My army is might, and my power is great. You will fall before us." We begin the one on one fight, only for me to bend a knee before the Orc Chief with less than five HP left. The huge orc approaches me and grabs me by the head, lifting me off the ground dangling. "You fought well, but your efforts are in vain. Here and now I will kill you. Then I will kill everyone in your precious village at the end of these woods. From there I will kill every human alive, and the dawn of the Orcs will forever reign. I will rule over the world and its slaves with an iron fist, while you and your people will be forgotten." This was it. This was my last stand. I was beaten and broken, but I was hoping I could swing my sword down upon this Orc and impose a scar, or impair him permanently. This was my only chance, and I picked up my inherited dice, and rolled with all my might... And rolled a 1. "GOD DAMMIT SON OF A BITCH THIS DAMN DICE!" I yelled, all the while my friends and the DM breaking down in laughter. The DM waves his hands and says "No no...redo. Roll again, bro." Not above taking charity I pick the same die and roll again.... Another 1. Now everyone is laughing even harder, except for me of course. The DM finishes his hardy chuckle and tells me to roll it once more, so he can calculate what type of critical failure I earned. I pick up the dice and toss it hard upon the table, causing it to bounce up and off the wall, swirl in the air, and slam down back on the table... Sitting on another 1. "NO THAT'S IT! SCREW THESE DICE! THEY'RE GOING IN THE TRASH!!!" I snatch the dice and stomp off like a kid towards the kitchen. As I do this, the table is still laughing and the DM tosses some of his own dice, makes some marks on a paper, picks up a book which references critical failures...and immediately stops laughing. His face went from a smile to a sullen frown, his brow furrowing in confusion. He looks around at his papers for a second in a haze, until finally his mouth drops slack. By now the other players have one by one stopped laughing, wondering what overcame the DM. When I return everyone is in silence as I sit down. I see the DM's face and yell "OH WHAT!? DID I ACCIDENTALLY CUT OFF MY OWN HEAD!? DID I PISS MYSELF TO DEATH!?!?" What the DM said next will remain with me for the rest of my life. A single sentence that has since lived on as legend around my group of friends. All he said as he lifted his eyes, staring in the abyss of disbelief, were words I have come to cherish: ".....player and adjacent target die...."

I once had a run of bad luck while playing D&D 3.5 🤣 So I was a Druid with a wolf companion and we were fighting against some orcs in a village. Wasn’t even the main bad guy or anything, just some of his orc thugs to cause terror and give us a reason to go after the BBEG. Anyways, so on my turn my wolf companion rushes up to an orc and starts chomping it, didn’t quite kill it. I decide to have my Druid attack with my bow at the same orc trying to finish it off. My DM remarks that I’m shooting at a target engaged in melee with an ally (my wolf) and says I’ll take a penalty to my attack roll. I reply “I should be alright as long as I don’t roll a 1” and roll my d20. I rolled a Nat 1. DM giggles, says for me to roll a d20 to see if I hit my wolf. I roll another Nat 1. At this point the entire table has burst out in full laughter including the DM. He informs me that not only did I hit my wolf companion with my bow but I scored a crit on it too! He asks me to make a Fortitude saving throw for my wolf to avoid death from massive damage (he liked that optional rule about massive damage). I roll my d20 and...another Nat 1! DM rules that I fire my bow but to my horror I see the arrow pierce my wolf’s head and basically nails it to a tree by the skull. Entire table is about dead from laughter and I chuck my d20 across the room in disgust...that time I got a Nat 20 🤣😂
