The playful architecture of Frank Gehry

At 92, famed architect Frank Gehry is not resting on his substantial laurels. The designer behind such landmarks as the Walt Disney Concert Hall in downtown Los Angeles and the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain, talks with "60 Minutes" correspondent Bill Whitaker about his creative process, and how aerospace technology has enabled him to turn his playful ideas into reality.

When we first got the EMP museum, now MoPOP in Seattle I thought it was odd looking and thought, what is this? Found out it was designed by Frank Gehry. Had heard the name but didn't know much about him. It grew on me as I liked visiting the museum and also found out more about Mr. Gehry. I realize everyone has their own observations and opinions, but as I've grown more accustomed to it I feel happy that Seattle is fortunate to have a Frank Gehry design. A talented man and it's great to see him still working and producing!

I just found a free Frank Gehry in Pop-up by Jinny Johnson and Roland Lewis. Someone left it in a mini-free Library in my neighborhood. Wow... what a visionary. Love these buildings... they speak a very fluid visual language.

But sometimes serendipity does come into play. Frank told this story of how the giant binoculars came to be in the design of the Chiat/Day building at 340 Main Street in Venice, CA. He felt that the design was missing a central focus. In working out the final scheme he looked up and saw a pair of binoculars on the shelf. He took them down and placed them in the model. They were a nice fit. (If anyone has a different version of that story, I'd like to see it.)

Yes! One day I was standing beside Frank in his office while he was looking at this design. He kept saying “this needs something.” That’s when I said “how about giant binoculars!” Frank suddenly looked up from the design, his mouth agape while his glassy eyes stared off into nothing. After a few seconds he quietly whispered “genius!” And I’m still waiting on my residual check!

BTW: when I went with friends to look at the Chiat building, a really mean security guard (woman with lots of testosterone) came out and yelled "Get away from the building!"

@@stephengolden6080 For some reason this seems to be a common thing in Los Angeles. My friend David was editing a film at Disney and I met him for lunch there one day. (I had to get a pass, of course.) We were walking around, looking at Michael Graves' new building. Once we were inside, a large woman with a bad attitude (same pattern here as at Chiat) started talking down to us, trying hard to intimidate. She might have had a high school diploma, but who knows? All she needed was a badge to act like a gorilla.

There are staircases on the outside of the concert hall. It's a great spot to take portrait pictures as you walk up. Someone could make a film on just that building, exterior and interior.

I have a couple collections of his drawings (repros). Although they seemed to be scribbled, you'd see the building in an instant, unmistakably. I became a devotee when I saw a small inset in a magazine. It was a photo of nothing more than a shade for horses on a ranch in Montecito. It was a flat dark blue plane that sliced through the air at such a subtle and seductive angle that it became art. I was hooked. Then I saw his home in Santa Monica. I was finished. I was hooked forever and ever. Gehry's genius rewarded me every step of the way.

Architecture is not Sculpture; Frank seems like a nice man and his own private office - at 6:23 - it looks nothing like the spaces he designs for others. Architecture in an age of extreme individualism. Some of the Sculpture is interesting; but Architecture is not Sculpture.

🤷🏻Sorry, Not Sorry I’ve never really liked any of his architecture to me it always made no sense.🤔🤷🏻 when Walt Disney concert hall first opened there was a controversy due to the metal panels on the music hall reflecting heat from the sun to the nearby office buildings in downtown LA. The surrounding buildings had to add protective heat panels to their windows due to his “architecture”.

I believe they resurfaced the exterior panels so it wasn't so reflective. They did a good job with that, while maintaining its silver sheen. Its whimsical while still being quite elegant. You get the gravitas of what goes on inside merely by walking around it's exterior. And it's supposed to have one of the best acoustics of any concert hall in the world through technical design.

Eye of the beholder. I think the Bilbao Museum gave new life to that city. The Walt Disney Concert Hall in LA likewise is whimsical while still elegant up close. Not sure what some people expect though? Neoclassical structure in the 21st century?
