I think we as a community have really misused the terms A cam and B cam. At what point did a camera with internal 6K RAW (with amazing color science), with internal NDs, 5inch monitor, high frame rates etc. not qualify as an A cam? The differences between the two should really come down to dependability and workflow. What ever camera gives you the best image, within your budget and simple workflow to deliver should be your A cam. I think we all have become spoiled in our expectations and just need to talk less and and create more. Because at the end of the day the cameras we are getting now, we could even dream of just 5 years ago especially at this price point.
@CCozart3 жыл бұрын
Excellent analysis into aspects of the quality, performance and economy of BMD impact on present day filmmaking. The B camera designation is such a subjective term. One could shoot a feature on a BMCC 2.5k and compete with the best professional images out there. Engineers look at specs, and accountants look at spending the budget allocated for equipment. When a lot of excess money is spent, where the resultant images are truly comparable, there seems to be a need to undercut BMD products with locate "defects" that are highly nuanced. This video's segment, showing the failed built-in ND filters for a highlight correction, is an example. Why would it not occur to a cinematographer to employ additional equipment under special circumstances, like an extra external ND filter? Again as stated; just 5 years ago the specs contained in a P6k Pro or even a Bmpcc 4k, were not available except to high-end production houses. These are A cameras for A cinematographers.

I genuinely don’t get the “problem” with the internal nds. If increasing your ISO by literally 1 stop generates that much noise, you’re probably already shooting too high. And if that’s the case then just do the opposite - decrease the ISO by 1 stop and add 2 more stops of light by changing the nd back. Also, 2 stops shouldn’t be that big a deal anyway, unless you’re shooting a scene with an extreme dynamic range and have no way to possibly reduce it (which is pretty rare). I don’t know, to me it just seems to become a problem in very few and specific instances, which happens with everything, since nothing is perfect. Including variable nds, which no matter how expensive they might be, are still 2 circular polarisers stacked on top of each other, which introduces all kinds of other problems. If I’m missing something, please do let me know, I would actually like to know!

@@edoardobrugnatelli1879 I usually like his content here, but I feel like he is pushing some bad practices. The current technology allows shooting with less light, but that doesn't mean people should only use available light every time. If someone is trying to balance interior vs. window, that's going to need some artificial lighting. The same look can still be achieved, though. Also, the lenses have an iris for a reason. When I used ENG cameras for news, I tried to go as wide open as possible, and use the internal NDs to stop down. On the lenses I used, I found that closing he iris just a touch actually improved the image. I was still able to get narrow DoF, and the look I was going for.

I disagree about the internal ND. It’s like saying why buy a prime when you can buy a zoom lens? It makes no sense for any cam manufacturer to put in half stops mechanically. That stack would be 3 inches deep. Also as much as you mention VND, They have their issues that are way worse than opening up the aperture or bumping ISO or slightly change shutter angle. I personally wouldn’t put a VND in front of any lens, considering I have bought the cheapest to a quite expensive one. The ones I own are expensive coasters and have been for years (moved over to buying Breakthrough Photography NDs which have NO color shift at all, let alone other artifacts in VNDs). One thing I can say is that I wish BMD would put an 8 stop ND on it because of wider T stop lenses in broad daylight.

@CodyPyper3 жыл бұрын
The problem is when you change iso in the pocket cams, you’re still recording at the native iso. So you could potentially introduce noise. But it’s a weird point to make, because I’m assuming the NDs real value are in run and gun or when you have to do super quick setups. If so, compromising not shooting at native isos, or stopping down your lens 1 stop further than you’d like is a fair trade off. If you are doing a setup, cinema, interview, etc. you can adjust lighting or put your own .3, .6, etc. on the front of your lens and call it a day. Seems weird to complain about something that is only there to help, not solve problems in every shooting environment...
@Questionthis13 жыл бұрын
I guess what it comes down to is the value comes in when you’re shooting with a matte box and you only need a one stop ND filter instead of a whole case of them because the in body ND changes in factors of 2 so with just a one stop ND on the matte box you can fine tune it without needing a whole set of filters. Up to you if that’s worth an extra $500. If you own a matte box and 4x5 ND (and if your lenses don’t take Variable ND’s) it might be but if you already own a set of ND filters it’s redundant.
@deanolium2 жыл бұрын
Exactly. And if you have a set of 1/3, 2/3 and 1 stop NDs, then you have a huge range of NDs. Heck, you only really need a 1/3 and 2/3 if you have a matte box where you can put two filters in.

So here is the thing. I'm a super small creator not making any money from anything film or camera related. Everything I buy I have to fund from my own pocket, and whilst I am super lucky in the fact that I am able to do this, there is no way I can shell out for an amazing "A" camera. Over the years I have used lots of different DSLR options, most of which were suggested by other content creators, each one being crippled by overheating, time limits on recording or something else. Then a friend suggested I check out Blackmagic and their line up. So after a lot of going back and forth and looking at used Ursa's and Mini's I decided to go for a brand new Pocket 6k Pro. It's totally changed my life and given me a new lease of creative freedom and impetus to get on and actually create. Are there trade offs, of course there are, what do you expect when it's main competition is selling at twice or three times the cost? Would I buy it again? In a heartbeat. I am sure this camera is not aimed at taking over from "A" camera's on big professional shoots, but it is bringing proper cinema camera features and image quality into the hands of creators starting out on their journey. What Blackmagic have done is really smart, putting an affordable camera in to the hands of people stepping up from DSLR or just getting in to cinematography. That way they get use to how Blackmagic work and things like the menu's, stepping up to an URSA mini or studio cam becomes a doddle. Not to mention that by using the EF mount it means people can bring their glass from previous camera's. Would I buy a 6k Pro if I had £20k to spend on an "A" cam, of course not, but a first time Indie filmmaker with hardly any budget would. I am quite frankly stunned that you think the internal ND's are such an issue, you realise there is nothing stopping you sticking a VND on the lens right?
@Dbj55555553 жыл бұрын
Sony’s electronic ND is very nice. Zcam with a stop and a half to start when you install it into the device not so nice. Too long to switch the device with a client standing over you and a bunch of others waiting for you. Color shifts and unwanted polarizing effects with a veritable Nd bad. Good quality irnd very good but slow to swap in a Matt box. This is the best you can get without spending the money using a Sony FX6 or 9. I would watch blowing out your highlights and fix the minor differences with braw using the internal ND’s. Braw is amazing to me. Still use my Matt box for shading and some of my preferred filters such as gradients, hot mirror etc. I bought one for interviews to go with my 6k. Your clients don’t care what brands they use. The only care about the final product and what they imagined it would be. I bought it.

I see your point on the stages of ND. While I would take it over a camera without built in ND any day. You do have to compensate in some regard typically stopping down in super bright scenarios. The logical evolution is electronic ND found in the FX6/9 a minimum of 1 stop and seemless adjustments to 1/128. Sure you could use a matte box, and have all the filters you could ever want. But in real world use, I have not had the luxury of extra crew or the time to make such changes. The ability to dial in perfect exposure on the camera is invaluable

Here’s the thing though, variable ND filters always make the image look worse then if you were using fixed ND filters, regardless of whether or not they’re internal or external. Static NDs aren’t very convenient but degrade the image as little as possible, variable NDs are convenient but they degrade the image slightly but noticeably when you know what to look for. Internal NDs have the convenience of a VND with all the upsides of a static ND. A little addition: increasing the ISO on the BMPCC from say 400 to 600 doesn’t actually add that much noise.
@deanolium2 жыл бұрын
With bumping the ISO up, if you're stretching the shadows in post, then 600 will add noise there, since it shifts the dynamic range up towards the highlights. So great if you want more detail in the highlights, but rubbish if you care about whats in the shadows. One key thing is that in the first ISO bracket, the point where the highlights clip is the same no matter what the ISO is.

Ok. Before I say anything, great video. I haven't seen any1 else raise this issue so I'm gonna try to help. The black magic cameras, new ones atleast have only 2 different ISOs. One for low gain and the other for high gain. Let's take the bmpcc4k as an eg The base iso for the low gain is 400 and the high ISO is (ok, I've forgotten what it is, but lets just go with 1600 for this example) 1600. Now between ISO 100 and 1250, you aren't changing the sensitivity of the sensor, if something is clipping at iso 1250, it will still be clipping at ISO 100. You'll have to adjust the shutter angle, iris or nd to bring that down. The BlackMagic cameras, when changing the ISO will simply shift where the middle gray point is, and redistribute how much information (shifts the dynamic range allocation) is captured in the shadows and highlights. This is different from many other cameras that will take the signal from the sensor and boost it or artificially lower it using the Analog to digital converters. This usually results in better signal to noise ratio at higher ISOs (cuz of in camera NR) but often results in colour shifts and loss of DR and sometimes detail. Filmmaker IQ did a great video on this. It's called something like dual native iso on bmpcc4k or something

As long as its a 12 bit raw signal how you expose your shot relative to iso matters as you don't have infinite dynamic range (about 11.8 stops at snr2 on pocket 6k i think) - so iso matters. Had it been a 32bit float signal, then not so much. Contrast ratios in lighing, ie the exposure outside vs inside on a face, however will always matter. The only effect a 32 bit float signal vs 12 bit linnear would have would be that you'd remain highlight detail outside, and noiseless shadow detail inside on the 32 bit signal where you'd clip on the 12 bit signal. It would still be more effective to light the shot than to try to "fix" it with a grade.

10 stops of ND was another reason I prefer the C70. I only wish that I still did not need a mist filter.

great video xDDD But I have still some questions as it's pretty hard to choose between the 6k and 6k pro haha. I've never had a video camera, so I'm somehow afraid that it will be too heavy with the Pocket 6k Pro (1.2 kg DJI Rs 2 stabilizer, 800g Sigma 18-35 mm, 1.2 kg Pocket 6k Pro, and another battery or SSD.) Do you think that could be the case? Especially when you e.g. film the whole day or when you travel and still have a drone. I also wonder if the 6k Pro's "tilting screen" is really necessary? (I filmed with the Gopro and the cell phone on a stabilizer and never really had any problems, even when I walked very close to the floor. Maybe it's different with the camera, as many 6k users said it is necessary). Buying one later would make less sense, as it costs more and is perhaps even more uncomfortable if you use the stabilizer and fix a "DJI 3D focus system" / microphone on the "head" of the camera. I've already looked a bit on the internet and apparently the 6k Pro fits on the RS 2, but it's not yet entirely clear to me whether that's really true. I have one last question then I say more than thank you; Do you actually need nd filters a lot in filmmaking? thxx

Hmmm you've got RAW dude and internal ND's you shouldn't ever be having exposure issues.

ragging on the nd's.. doesn't even consider adding light to the subject? Even with a variable ND in that shot you're still going to want to add light to the pot, or get a camera with a higher dynamic range. Think you're stuck in the wrong headspace there
@lucki4mac2 жыл бұрын
This camera is great for a beginners to Intermediate Independent Filmmakers, because you can practice manually pulling focus when shooting with this digital 6K cinema camera, which has a similar process as shooting on 16mm/35mm cameras, to also include capturing great looking footage, in a controlled environment. Also if you're on really tight budget, then the price will definitely not put you in the poor house.👍

Having a matte box on a small gimbal isn’t really the most ideal situation. If you’re going to have one camera, this would be a much better option than the non pro. A slight change of the shutter or aperture will fill in the ND gaps.
@antone97513 жыл бұрын
Why not adjust your aperture by a stop if you need in between stops. It really doesn't make all that much difference DOF wise and not everything needs to be shot wide open contrary to popular belief. Professional video cameras have used ND filter wheels for the last 20+ years that are not infinitely variable like a Vari ND.
@pgtips42403 жыл бұрын
Your complaints imo do not hold any weight. All your 'issues' are not really issues that do not have a solution. If you think there is a better option for money than the bm 6k pro then go buy it, but I doubt you will find it! There is nothing wrong with the 2 stop nd increments and then making a small iso adjustment, also you have the option of lighting your scene properly to compensate. The bm 6k pro is a pro camera, it's not a run and gun amateur camcorder that does everything automatically. Also, if you do get a little bit of iso noise, divinci resolve that comes with the camera has one of the best denoisers I have ever used. It restores the footage to noiseless without degrading it.

dont think you understood the usage of ND filter.. and indoors use ND filter gels from outside attached on window. And use a f-stop balanced light setup with fills and bounces. a pro with no light setup... hmm... thanks anyway..

Thanks for bringing up the ND issue, because for me it would be an issue since most of the time I don't use lights to make up the exposure difference. You made me realize that I would have to use VND on the lens anyway. Thanks :)

So what is the point of this video? I’m so lost is the ND the problem? To me sounds like user error
@dvm_1013 жыл бұрын
That's why you have Dual Gain ISO... ND4 and for example ISO 400 is still to bright? Switch to ND6. Now it's too dark? Then go from ISO 400 to somewhere in the second gain for example ISO 1250-3200 and bumm. Perfect quality, no noise, problem solved.

I think the fact that these are built in IR ND's is highly overlooked. Great vid.
@ScarmackProductions3 жыл бұрын
Your rig also probably cost your close to $6,000 and you're comparing it to a out of the box $2,500 camera, which even the more expensive C70 has the same issues you're referring to for almost double the price............I'm sorry, but you're just nitpicking now.

I don't think the Pocket 6K Pro is worth it if you're already in possession of the first Pocket 6K. Internal NDs, flip screen, and new battery is nice but it's not a HUGE leap forward. And honestly, I'd rather have a lightweight matte box (Polar Pro or Bright Tangerine) with NDs or filters. That lens protection is much appreciated.
