I think the phrase "bros before hoes" that I've heard and said to my friends leads to this mindset of don't ruin something that has no "direct" involvement when it's pretty fucked up on the cheated end. Whenever there is cheating situations it messes with friendships simply by knowing it's happening and you chose inaction, action, or gossip to others. Edit: some typos because I was on the phone :)

As a biologist (pharmaceutical molecular geneticist), it made me think of my early grad school days when I was naive enough to think that most people wanted to save lives and advance science for the sake of humanity. Now I run a biotech company and I have so many defense mechanisms in place not only with new people I meet but also some employees and almost all outside collaborations or acquisitions that I find great relief spending a weekend in the mountains with old friends from my school days because I know I can try to let my guard down even if it is only for a short while. I don't think I will ever be that hopeful passionate trusting young man again, and it breaks my heart, because I see that hope in students I mentor and I want to protect them, but I know that one day the world will stomp that light out.
