I think it’s the soldier because in the end credits you can see the happy mask Salesman at the Lon Lon ranch party which takes place in the adult timeline because the hero of time was already sent back to the child era

Almost covered this in the video actually, but cut it because of time/too much speculation (on my part) but it’s definitely a good counter point. My explanation per the video was that the Happy Mask Salesman persona was something he became in order to appear friendly to the Hylians, so perhaps he went back to his original appearance after Ganondorf was beaten. This is completely speculative of course.

I once connected his appearance with that of Bongo Bongo. He doesn't just have one eye, he kind of seems to be missing a head altogether. I thought that perhaps their shared strangeness of no head with a glowing eye in its place could be the result of a Sheikah execution gone wrong. This could also explain why the Poe Collector prefers Ganondorf: the loyalist Sheikah tried to kill him, but his angry spirit lingered in his mangled body.

Yeah, you can tell Bongo Bongo was an execution (hands and head were removed). He was killed as a traitor, probably because he was Ganondorf's daddy, or if not that, loyal to the young King before death. Something similar could, in theory, have happened to the Poe Collector.

A thought I just had, which other people in the comments section have also mentioned, is that the red 'eye' might be the cross section of the neck as the result of decapitation. When you look at the proportions of the poe collector, his shoulders are very high up to where his 'red eye' is. And the top of the tunic looks like a high collar. Maybe it is the soldier from the child era, except he's missing a head 😬

I can think of one unfortunate caveat however. That being that Link can visit the Poe Seller with the Mask of Truth still in his inventory. Of course, he can't wear it, but he still has it. Maybe the Mask Salesman has multiple, but that seems unlikely, since it's supposedly a magical artifact of the Sheikah.

A few things I'd like to point out that don't particularly prove nor disprove the theory, but just a few things to think about: The Happy Mask Salesman appears in the adult timeline celebration of Ganondorf's defeat, while the Poe Collector does not appear. While it would seem strange for someone who was singing Ganondorf's praises, on the grounds of business, earlier only to celebrate his sealing later, I could easily see the Poe Collector being an opportunist who watches out for his own hide and only his own hide, siding with the victor, no matter who that may be.

I'm still sticking with the poe collector being the guard. Between the Triforce imagery, the guards dialogue, and being in the same place. I'm pretty sure that's the conclusion Nintendo wanted us to make. Saying the Happy Mask Salesmen requires a lot of rationalizations including ignoring Ocarina of Time's credits, ignoring the sudden lack of other masks in his possession, and some fairly large jumps in logic. As for the eye and powers I think given his line of work the poe collector easily could have just learned magic or could have made some sort of deal with the dead. Regardless of who it actually is. But hey it's still interesting food for thought and you can't please everyone. Keep up the content.

Another hypothesis about the single eye is that the shieka made the mask of truth based on people who achieved the ability to see into minds. Basically that when you get to see the truth your face distorts and your eyes merge or one eye becomes dominant and shifts to the center of your face. I'm thinking that in Legend of Zelda some artifacts have designs based on other in universe things. If I remember I'll put some examples in the comments of this post.

It's obviously intended to be the soldier from the same room (based on location and dialogue) - it's a pretty clear example of foreshadowing. The reason he knows Link's name is because he spent hours with the pesky pot-smashing child seven years ago. As for the skin tone, occupation etc., they aren't exactly good criteria to base an argument on since many other characters fulfill those same criteria. Even if we grant that it could be the Happy Mask Salesman, it can't be on the grounds that he has the mask of truth - he doesn't. Link brings the mask of truth through the door of time (and it being grey in the inventory, in accordance with Navi's explanation that some items cannot be used by adults, disproves any supposed additional abilities that it would have for grown-ups - since grown-ups can't even don the mask). I will admit that the last point isn't foolproof, since other masks can be seen being worn by adults in the game even if Link can't wear them as an adult - but I believe the mask existing in your inventory is sufficient to disprove that the character is wearing it (unless there is more than one, which would be kinda silly based on the lore). One strong technical reason for there being only one mask of truth (beyond the Sheikah lore) is that you can't sell/buy this mask - you may only borrow it upon selling the rest (and upon borrowing it there are none left in stock). The Hylian attire also makes it very unlikely that the character is supposed to be the Happy Mask Salesman rather than the guard, since he has no direct affiliation with Hyrule.

I also thought this. My headcanon is that this soldier became a traitor to the Royal Family at the beginning of Ganondorf's attack, got beheaded as a punishment, and then revived by Ganondorf as a "gift" when he finally took over, but since Ganondorf only had the Triforce of Power, he wasn't able to fully restore the soldier's body and therefor has to stay hooded since all there would be where his head was would be a stump.

While I do find your theory interesting, I still think that the Poe Collector is the bored guard who was present in that same spot, during Link's childhood, since he wanted more troubles in the world and already had a fascination with ghosts. As weird as the Happy Mask Salesman is, he didn't want to see Termina destroyed by Majora's Mask, and was quite impressed with the fact that Link made so many people happy, by the end of the game. He seemed to be relieved that the evil power of Majora had left Majora's Mask, after Link defeated Majora. If he really was a supporter of evil, I don't see why he would be relieved to see a great evil like Majora being vanquished, and a whole entire land being saved. Also, in the adult timeline, we see him celebrating Ganondorf's defeat at the hands of Link, Zelda and the Sages, along with a lot of the residents of Hyrule.

The Happy Mask Salesman in OoT can be seen during the end credits at the party at Lon Lon Ranch. (Adult timeline) In Majora’s Mask another Poe collector is found in the game in Ikana while Happy Mask salesman is hanging out inside the clock tower.

Meanwhile, in the split, second child timeline in which Link is sent back into after completing OOT, Link Continues as a child into the world of Termina to meet "him". A seperate him from this specific child timeline. Its totally possible even if Link was just sent back to the very same child timeline.

Hey bandit, I don’t know if this is widely accepted or not, but I thought you might be interested. The Divine Prank: At the end of OoT. Link was sent back in time and retained the Triforce of Courage. This is why he was able to convince the King of Hyrule that Ganondorf was evil. Because he was now in a timeline with the Triforce of Courage, the other two Triforce pieces then went to their most worthy counterparts. This is why Ganondorf had the Triforce of Power at his execution within the child timeline.

I always assumed that it was the soldier, but even if it's not I don't think it's a one-eyed character. I think it is someone whose face is almost completely obscured by their hood. That all being said, I'm always up for a new Bandit theory.

It doesn't look like the poe collector has a head. It looks more like a neck with a central eye with just a hood covering it. A neck with a central red eye. Reminds me of bongo bongo. Might they be related?

You did say something interesting about why the Happy Mask Salesman left Hyrule. Maybe in true he was fallowing Link because he knew death would fallow Link. Which then leads to him getting all the Mask in Major's Mask.

I was really young when I first played Ocarina of Time, and at the time I had only one eye for a good chunk of the day due to a condition that required a lot of patching. In a very weird way, I think I connected to him more than any other character at the time.

I just spent years assuming the Poe Collector was the Hyrule Castle soldier who said he'd prefer if there were more problems in the world & that he studies Poes. I hadn't considered this theory & I think it's a very interesting 1. As far as the boy in the Graveyard... I'm surprised he wasn't around as an adult to take over as the Graveyard Keeper as he said he wanted to be like Dampe as a child.

My own canon is the child in the Kak graveyard is the Poe collector. He was a child who wanted to be a grave keeper and linger around ghosts. They both wear masks. After 7 years the boy doesn't appear as a grown up, and both characters carry sticks and intermittently strike their sticks on the ground in similar animations.

It wouldn't at all be a stretch to say the Poe collector's hood looks a bit like if the happy mask salesman flipped his cloak inside out and wore it weird.

My theory about who he is is that he is a corrupted that made a deal with Ganondorf in order to get back to life with the condition that he is condemned to give him another poes souls in order to power up his army/castle/himself, needing 1000 souls to pay off his debt.

Ngl as a kid I always thought the Poe Seller just had a big round nose that was sticking out of the shadow under the hood. It never occurred to me that it might be a single glowing eye lol.

I’d say its the kid. He equips a stick, patrols the graveyard and mayhaps grow interested in ghosts after aquiring the spooky mask and then start a business like Dampe. The eye? It’s a mask he made himself of a tektite.

In a way I really love the theory about the mask and the salesman! There's just one thing that I find hard to believe: Would the happy mask salesman really abandon all (but one) mask?
