A local youth center of mine had a yugioh card club for some reason and I remember one time we played a game with fake cards someone had printed mixed into our real decks. Most of the cards he made weren't insanely OP, so it was really fun and the fact most of our decks were still real cards balanced it a bit and made people get hyped over drawing a fake card. The fake cards were dumb shit like "Zoidberg." I distinctly remember that card. It was just a generic level 4 monster.

I think with streaming becoming more dominant, there's less incentive to make a programming block feel like a home or an event. Things like these commercials rewarded watching the entire broadcast and staying on that channel instead of changing. Kids channels just tried a lot harder to keep attention during commercials and theming, to point it still has a lasting impact on those who watched it.

Kids WB was such a trip in hindsight, especially with the crossover commercials having that incredibly primitive editing style that just threw in 3D because it looked cool. But the characters actually spoke with their voices, so it seemed legit enough that these guys would punch out after recording as themselves and hang out doing weird shit. It honestly made me think that you can just mix and match media for fun, and honestly between things like Cartoon Cartoons, Jimmy/Timmy Power Hour, or just the entire lineup of Lilo and Stitch crossovers, there was plenty of room for mashing completely unrelated franchises together to make something cool, which is unironically why I picked up Smash Bros. Melee. Childhood me had it lucky thinking that you could just cross franchises like that.

Between the two, I'd say Yugi is superior. Not only does he have the Puzzle that tilts challenges in his favor, he's better at thinking on his feet against opponents he doesn't know about beforehand. Whereas Ash typically battles trainers he's seen before and can try again if he loses.

This hit me with so much nostalgia I teared up! I could not go a Saturday morning without watching Pokemon, Digimon but that was on another channel, and Yu-Gi-Oh. I give massive props to those three and sailor moon the dic dub, for getting me into anime even tho I didn't know it was anime. I remember all those bumpers, and wanting to win that shirt so bad!!

Woooow, thanks for the throwback. Used to watch WB every Saturday morning when I was a kid. Also, vitiated the Warner Bros studios in CA just before the pandemic. Crazy to see the water tower, all the props, and even buildings used as far back as the 60s Batman settings.

Yes, there indeed was a promo with Ash Ketchum, Yugi Muto, and Lan Hikari from MegaMan NT Warrior driving with American cartoon characters looking at American landmarks. (As TV Tropes calls "Aluminum Christmas Trees", most of these were actually real, even if elements were played up comically.) Also, Imhotep from The Mummy: The Animated Series was with them. He's Egyptian. But people want to pick on Japanese (and Italian) characters singing an American anthem. Go figure.

3:51 okay id like to mmention this scene right here as its likely a clever reference... in the episode "Abra and the Psychic Showdown" ash's pants are telekinetically pulled down by they gym leaders father (i cant believe i just typed that). what makes it interesting is that character was voiced by Maddie Blaustein, the same woman who was the VA for Yugi's grandfather
